I am planning on having a motivational board meeting this Sunday and wonder
if any of you have some creative ideas. I have tote bags that say "Sunday
Stuff" on the outside so the theme I wanted to use was "Young Women Success
is In the Bag." Then I will fill the bags with essentials for YW
leadership. This is where I need help. I don't want to spend a lot of
money but I want the items to be motivational (ie. candy hearts for love,
etc.)
Thanks in advance

I sure would be interested in hearing about some of the activities you and
your YW have done. I had mentioned before that were a small group (9 total,
3
active) Our ward was split in January, we were MUCH larger then. I get a lot
of "we're to small to do anything good" from the girls. So I'd like to hear
from those in similar situations. Thanks!
>>
Okay here is a suggestion for small groups ... have them bring their friends!
We usually have a few non members ... the girls call and invite their friends.
Its great way to introduce the gospel and the girls enjoy having their friends
come. Those that aren't LDS (yet) have done the spiritual activities as well
as the fun activities, basically whatever we do they do too. They have a good
time. And the best part is THEY COME BACK! OFTEN!
Seek after your inactives....
I have to share, last night we had an end of the summer swim and BBQ.One of my
inactives that I have worked with for a long time came! I was pretty
jazzed... We have a great relationship and it was so wonderful to see her at
a church related activity. This is a girl I bet will turn herself around and
do great things.

I am also interested in what to do with small groups. As I mentioned when I
introduced myself, we have about 4 or 5 active girls. Last night I got a
official count of all the YW in our Ward and it's 66! I nearly fainted! I
have no counselor's or help and it's kind of a overwhelming feeling!
Here' s some things I've decided to do to help me overcome that overwhelming
feeling. First, I'm going to write a post card or letter to those I have
address for and send them a welcome and list the activities we will have for
the next month. Then I plan on speaking to the bishop or someone who knows
who these YW are and finding about 3 or 4 we can actively work on. For those
very few that just come once in awhile that I know we will make cookies and
do a personal visit. I'm trying not to be to overwhelmed with all of this!
Any other idea's would be greatly appriicated.
I also wonder how many 18 year old girls you have in YW? It's my
understanding that it's there choice after they turn 18 to stay or go to
Relief Society? We have several 18 year old girls still in high school.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerly,
Betty

What a cute idea! How about a carpet sample with stenciled 'pray' for a
prayer rug, or a rock with 'dyttp' (did you think to pray) or on some other
item, they can only succeed with help from the Lord. Candle to remind them
to share the light of Christ. Something to help them to understand (like a
spy glass to search out what is their specific calling) that this calling
was of the Lord, and they have a mission to fufill specific to them and the
girls. A clock face with 26 hours on it, to show the Lord will help them
find the time if they are sincere. tissue to wipe the tears at times of
motherly pride in the girls or in times of trials. 100,000 dollar candy
bar, to help stretch the budget with spiritual not entertainment. Hats to
represent the different 'hats' they will need to meet the needs of the
girls. A Spoon to represent the need of 'Feeding His Sheep". Something to
do with PP book. they must have a testimony of the program, and of PP or
they cannot succeed.
Quick thoughts, hope it helps to get the mind turning.

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Report on Girls Camp 1998
What an awesome experience I had this past week at Girls Camp! As the
Stake Camp Director, I was a bit nervous to embark on this "journey", but
to coin this years EFY theme, there was great "Joy in the Journey!" For
those of you who keep files, heres a summary of Operation Camp '98--
First of all, my asst. CD adn I decided that camp in a Boy Scout camp
would be a thing of the past and so we researched available camp grounds
and found that the State Parks in MN have great group campgrounds, plus
they are very affordable--about $4 per girl per night! Aslo, just so you
know, we are working with about 100 girls and 25 adults.
I made arrangements to have medical scrubs donated. This was so cool.
Each girl received a minimum of 1 pair. Girls who showed up to the Stake
Pre Camp Clinic got another pair. Wards who got their monies turned
first, got dibs on the leftovers. All of the scrubs were blue. I made
name tags (like hospital ID's with each girls picture and her level (1st
years were Med Students, 2nd levels were Interns, 3rd levels were , 4th
levels were M.D.'s, the YCL were psychologists, the Ward Leaders were
psychyatrists, and the Stake leaders were the Board of Directors) Each
level was printed on a differnent value color, laminated and hole punched
at the top. The girls had to wear these at all times and they were used
for buddy checks at swim times. Boy, were my thoughts on "uniforms"
reinforced. What unity they created. We told the girls they only needed
to wear the scrubs at two times during the week-- one for the group phot
and the other during testimony meeting. However, about 98 percent of the
girls wore them all week. Many chose to hand wash them and let them dry
during the night.
WE camped in levels this year, something new for our stake. As long as I
am the Stake CD, we'll keep doing it too! (WEll, if I can get priesthood
support) Each Adult was preassgined a level to work with. I assigned
one of the adults in each level to be the level coordinator (This was an
adult who was a certified camper) We had planning meetings during the
Spring for them to get together and make there plan. A Stake YW
presidency person was assigned to be over each level to help smooth out
any problems that the ward leaders might not beable to handle. I worked
with the YCL's (we had 15 this year). The YCL were told that their
number 1 responsibility was to unify their levels. These girls did a
fantastic job. They also helped with certification, but it was up to the
adults to give them assignments.
Ok, so heres kindof how each day went.
Monday-- Arrived in buses around 3pm (BTW, this is the first time we did
the bus thing--the girls loved it, 2 1/2 hour drive). Had Flag ceremony
to open camp. Priesthood dedicated camp ground. Girls dimissed to set
up cabins and then meet with level coordinators, leaders to get weekly
assignments, instruction, etc. Dinner. 9 of 12 meals cooked by girls on
camp stoves or over fire. Evening activity7:30-9: FHE, by wards. Each
ward CD was assigned to get something organized for this well ahead of
time. Many of the wards delegated the responsibililty out to a member of
their wards YW presidency. Worked great! After the evening activities
each night we had snack and then the girls went to theri cabins for
"Pillow Talk" The YCL went in and told a story, gave a handout and had a
disscussion with the girls on the assigned topic. While this was
happening, the adults and myself met (20 minute eval meeting).
Afterwards we had an optional Campfire activity each night--Tonights,
Unity game.
Tuesday- Wake up call, Scripture Study, Flag Ceremony, Breakfast and Lab
(8:30-11:00)-- We decided this year to let the levels have a bit more
flexibility on when they wanted to do meals, so the kitchen coordinator
had boxes ready for pick up 1/2 hr before Lab time. While some girls
were cooking, others were certifying, and others where doing their
assigned chores. Worked slick! Craft time-- Each waard was responsible
for provideing a recyclable craft idea, kit and explain during there
assigned time. Oh yeah, we also had 2 Spiritual labs today one at the
end of the morning lab time and one at the beginning the Dinner/Lab time
These were 1/2 hr labs taught by Stake YW Presidency people. Nice break
from "certifying" They were very hand on and well put together. Lunch.
Rest. Sports-- each day the YCL planned several sports activiites
depending on weather. Dinner and Lab time--worked the same as Bkft and
Lab. Evening activity--Mormonad Skit night by wards. We gave out the
M&M's in the hand--girls loved em! Fireside Activity: Campfire songs
Wednesday-- Daily Schedule the same except 4th years left for their tent
camp out/ hike in the Primative camp area. Evening Activity-- First Aid
Relays planned by the YCL, First Aid Test . Fireside Activity:
Squaredancing and swing-- 4th Years hiked back down for the dancing.
Thursday-- Signature day! Fabric pens handed out so girls could get
signatures Hike day, girls packed lunches and took off. Afternoon Water
party-- boats and swimming Dinner-- pot luck, everyone ate together.
Testimony meeting with Torchbearer ceremony. Beautiful. Camp
highlight. Pillow talk-- You are loved-- 15 minutes of silence and
girls read letters provided by moms and or dads.
Friday-- Break down camp, say good-byes, go home.
Definately a successful, spiritually renewing, friendshipping week! Cant
wait for the awards ceremony!

We played a game once called two truths and a lie. Everyone sits in a circle
and one person starts it by getting the person next to her to give her two
truths and one lie about herself and the first person has to guess which is
the lie. If she is right she sits down, if she is wrong she goes on to the
next person.

Find out what their hobbies and interests are. Ask them to come and teach a
class on that. Next week I have 2 inactives that are coming to teach the other
girls how to play waterpolo in my pool.
My Laurel advisor mails out "laurel lines" every month to the inactive
Laurels. But first she call everyone and gets info on each and every girl.
Then she has the active girls each write a small note to one of the girls and
mails it to them. Last night one of our inactive girls went to our beach
activity and she made a comment about one of the other inactive girls that she
had learned from the newsletter.
While we were at camp I took 5 pictures of all the girls from our ward that
were at camp. I developed them with double prints down the hill at a one hour
photo. I mailed them home to 10 girls that didn't come to camp along with an
Airhead candy. I had some exciting responses from this simple service.
Tell each of your girls that you love them. Be honest and pray for that love
and it will come.

My aunt's ward has a yearly tradition in their ward called "Pig Out". Each
person brings a recipe or two and makes whatever recipe they are bringing.
It's a huge potluck and they even have the bishopric judge the dishes and
award prizes. Then all the recipes are collected and put into a booklet and
handed out a few weeks later. They are always darling books decorated with
lots of pigs. It sounds like a really fun idea and I think the YW might have
a good time doing it. (It's a R.S. thing in their ward). Anyway, just
thought I'd share!!

Yes, I'm definitely interested in a cookbook! So just let me know the cost,

We got them from a Hospital Cleaning supply company. Most of them were
used, but for whatever reason they were going to be thrown away. Some
of them looked bran new. Some of them had had a ink stain from a ball
point pen. I started collecting them last September. They just kept a
bin for me and I'd go every couple of months and pick up what they had.
Getting them donated is the only way to go. To buy them, they are about
30 dollars a pair.

The directive must be something different because we slept in families.
The boys on one side of the cart and the girls on the other. When we got
to the camp site, we just moved away from each other. The boys slept over
there with our "pa" and the girls slept over here with the "Ma". We had
several (12) different familles all together so we really weren't that far
apart from each other. (maybe 10 feet) This is a church sponsored activity
(where we were) and it is run by the church so I wonder if the directive
isn't meant for something else. I know that if we have a ward YM/YW
activity and one group is staying over night the other group MUST go home.
We never have camp outs within our ward or stake that involve both sexes.

Kelly,
With a small group you can do a lot of things a big group can't. What
about volunteering at a nursing home once a month or a care-center. Maybe
there is a Children's hospital near you that would like girls to come and
read to kids.
The nice thing about just a few girls is that you can do those things that
cost alittle more money. With our 40 girls it is out of the question!
