Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Sunday lessons
The members in our bishopric trade off months to visit our YW opening
exercises and I believe it is good for the girls to see them there and
feel their concern for them.
Every other month we also have a member of the bishopric teach a
combined lesson to all the YW and usually we ask them to teach the
kick-off lesson if it falls on the same sunday. This adds variety to
who the girls are always hearing from and the bishopric is also well
versed in the young women theme as a result.
One other thing my bishop insists on is setting apart new class
presidencies in YW opening exercises. All the girls feel the spirit
of the blessing given and through the words of the blessing come to
and understanding of the role class presidencies play and how
important they are.
Just a few thoughts.

Hi Joan
The 911 tape Is a new one by John Bytheway. It can be purchased from
Deseret Book. The success to the waterslide is to be honest, truthful and
right to the point, plus you must work the crowd. Everytime some one
giggles or makes a remark or acts like they do not believe you go after it.
It was always fun to give. I would present the waterslide every few months,
the youth in our ward can now give it to me. But what happens is one will
start to do something wrong and one of their friends would come up to me
and say: "Bishop, you better talk to so-and-so they are trying to go down
the waterslide."

Hi Dee
Isn't the color code neat. I am white and my wife is yellow. Taylor says
they are the two that marry's the least. My father in-law is red. He is a
healthy red and he comments sometimes that we need a red person in our
household so some thing can and will get done. You need to get the book or
the tapes. Once you understand the color code you can do great things. I
know how to act red and on some occasions I will act red to get what I want
from a store. Because like he says things are saved just for red people.
Taylor also says, there are not as many white people as the rest. Maybe 18
to 20 percent white and the rest are about even. When I found this out I
said Taylor let me tell you a story. First of all I am the Bishop and I am
white. One of my counselors is white, The entire RS Pres, EQP, HPGL, Exec.
Secty, Primary are all white. His response back to me was: "How do youi
ever get anything done in your ward"
What is funny is red people never see negative traits as negative. I am
grateful to Taylor for the color code. I really try hard each day to be a
better person. I know we are always told to strive for perfection. But
unless something like the color code comes along, we do not know where to
start.

The handbook states all unused budget money will be returned to Salt Lake
at the end of the year. The only exception is Missionary fund and the other
account. So, all unused budget money is automatically kept by Salt Lake. If
you put your camp money in the other account you will be able to keep it.

Maybe if he had asked before hand I could have told him next week.

Subject: (lds-yw) Leadership handout ideas???
In our upcoming leadership meeting our Stake Pres. has asked us to do a
handbook training session. To make this fun we have decided to play
"Handbook Jeopardy" after each question is answered we will open the
handbook to the page the information was taken from and have the leaders
highlight the information in their handbooks.
We would like to give each leader a highlighter with a cute saying on
it. This is where I need help. Does anyone have something cute we
could attach to the highlighter?

Hi Liz
That is what I liked about the waterslide. It broke down any and all
Barriers. If you handle the presentation properly, all the youth will
participate. If someone has a question , stop and answer it and use this as
a teaching moment. BE HONEST, tell them like it is. The youth will love
you for it. Each age group I would teach differently. There are a couple
stories I would only tell the priests and Laurels. Believe me it got their
attention and they listened. Can't tell that story here, I would certainly
get roasted. This will make the difference.

We are doing the cookbook for next year's girls camp. We had to get it done by
this month in order to get the cookbooks back in time for Christmas. We really
felt like we needed the Christmas season to boost sales. We haven't collected
any money yet... we will when we deliver cookbooks. So we will be making the
money in mid-December. I don't think that is a problem... the Bishop & ward &
financial clerks know what we are doing and haven't said it is a problem. If
it was we could just wait two weeks until January to submit all the money.
Usually, from what I've been told, the money just "rolls over" into the next
year. As long as it is earmarked girls camp money we are ok. In fact, I'm
hoping we will make MORE money than it costs to send girls to camp & we will
just roll it over into the following year to go toward the next year's camp.
That is how I understand it... can't promise that is is 100% accurate! ▄

This small branch had a great camp director that solicited donations from
different businesses in the area such as hair salons, supermarkets, nail
salons, etc for gift certificates. The YW held an all day carnival that
consisted of games for kids (small prizes to win), sold food (which was
bought with a gift certificate from a local market), had a garage sale with
articles donated by ward members, and an auction. At the same time that
they were holding their carnival another ward YW group had a car wash at
the same building - so that attacted lots of people. The girls were so
proud of themselves for raising that large amount of money ... I think it
helped them gain some self-confidence and the knowledge that if they work
together they can accomplish many great things!

Last year our Bishop decided to not have any activities (Mutual, RS etc)
during the month of July. We still ended up doing things such as girls
camp, and the boys camping activities. This year the ward council decided
not to skip July, so we've had an activity (of some sort) each week. It is
hard, especially with vacations and all, but I feel that consistancy is
important. When you discard a program because of lack of attendance, you
are making a statement, that maybe it just isn't all that important after
all.
Just my opinion

I live in a "university" town that REALLY slows down in the summer. And we
have alot of stake activities in the summer like girls camp, YW high
adventure, youth conference, temple trips, etc. We've tried to schedule
activities in the past in the summer with very little attendance. Some
families take month-long vacations (myself included). The scouting program
stops for the summer (at least in our ward) and so we do too. We have an
occasional activity, but our regular Wednesday night meetings don't happen
until school starts again.
I'm sure this wouldn't be the case with every ward, but with our ward it
works and no one seems to mind.

I agree with Kathy that it's important to be consistently having activies. Some
families rarely take vacations (at least in my area) and I don't think it's good
for the kids to be idle all week during the summer except for Sundays.
Regardless of how many attend, those that do show up deserve to be able to
participate in an activity.

Kristen,
Thanks for the cute ideas with the pillow cases. We have had a small YW's
group this summer (8) since so many of ours went away for the summer. They
are all returning this next week and my counselors and I have talked about
having a Personal Progress sleepover for them. You gave me some good ideas.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you though.

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Pioneer Trek / Wilderness Youth Conference
Sue,
Our stake just had their Youth Conference in July and it was the Pioneer
Trek at Marriott Farms in Va. I am the YW's Pres. in my ward and didn't have
the opportunity to go but my daughter went and my first counselor. They came
back from the Trek with such a wonderful testimony of it. Our Bishop had a
Sacrament meeting the day after they returned and had some of the leaders
and youth tell how they liked it.There was not one negative response! My
daughter told me that she knew it was going to be hard. They did only get an
orange the first day and plenty of fluids. They had the women's pull the
first day and allot of the YW said that as they tried to pull the 600 pd.
handcart up the hill they didn't do it alone. One girl said she felt a hand
on her back helping her push it up the hill and no one was behind her. The
second day they didn't walk as far as the first day but still walked allot.
They went threw streams and even a river! They had to depend on their
families and their Ma & Pa they were assigned to. The second night they had
a big "hoe-down" and had a blast. The third day they had a testimony meeting
and I heard that there were many tears shared! My husband & I went to pick
the youth up at the end and I could feel the spirit there as the youth came
over the hill with their handcarts and singing "Come Come Ye Saints" dressed
in their pioneer clothing. My daughter said she is so grateful for the
opportunity she had to attend this Trek. Our Bishop said at the Testimony
meeting that going on this trek was the closest he has been to the spirit
besides going to the Temple!! I know there are allot of concerns about the
food supply for the youth and other questions but I can tell you that this
is an experience they will never forge! If your youth can go then let them
go and prepare for this. We started back in April with a fireside and some
video. In fact the stake is having a "Youth Conference Reunion" hoe-down in
two weeks. The youth are anxious to go and see everyone again. Hope your
stake decides to go! Good luck!

I agree. When I was the ward YW Pres (I'm now Stake Pres) we were struggling
with this problem too. Part of our solution was to have a combined activity
once a month with the four wards meeting in our building. Each ward took a
turn during May, June, July or August and planned an activity, hosting the
other three wards. That way, we had a great turn out of YW and each ward only
had to host one time. The other three weeks in the month were left to each
ward to plan as usual. It was really fun and we had some great activities.
