Subject: Re: (lds-yw) YW-sacrament program
How about having the girls relate the young women values to the life of
Christ? How He exemplified these values and how by using the values in our
life we can become more like the Savior? Talk about the personal progress
book. Do you know why it is designed by having the tissue in front of
Christ?? The tissue with the temple on it? Because we come to the Savior
THROUGH the temple. Just a thought..

My bishop asked us to do the Sacrament meeting next month. He wants it on
values-through the great ideas from this group, was able to scratch up a
program. We have to put it together quick since we just got the assignment
and have to put it on the Sunday following girls camp.
Here is the program:
intro by YW Pres.
Song: My rainbow of Values
Each girl will then either have the assignment to either read the scripture
that goes with each value or talk about the value/color and why that color
reminds them of that value. I am helping them out with some
suggestions/stories and only expect a 2-3 min. talk. Then I will give our
bishop the rest of the time for a "wrap-up" I only have about 10 girls
available to participate and figure we will have to involve leaders and the
girls doubling up with parts.

Would anyone out there like to share their conversion story with my
girls! I am looking for someone that was converted in their youth by a
youth! Someone the girls might be able to relate to!??
Just a note of thanks for those that responded to my last request of the
Dedicatory prayers!! It was just wonderful! I read the prayer of the
Chicago Temple and what a beautiful prayer it is! If you have not read
that one DO! The girls were very touched!
Thanks for all you do to lift me!!

<< I am looking for a good story on KNOWLEDGE in a booklet I am putting

Knowledge
A young man came to Socrates one time and said, "Mr. Socrates, I have come
1,600 miles to talk to you about wisdom and learning." He said, "You are a man
of wisdom and learning, and I would like to be a man of wisdom and learning,
and I would like to have you teach me how to be a man of wisdom and learning."
Socrates said, "Come follow me," and he led the way down to the seashore. They
waded out into the water up to their waists, and then Socrates turned on his
friend and held his head under the water. His friend struggled and kicked and
bucked and tried to get away, but Socrates held him down. Now if you hold
someone's head under the water long enough, he will eventually become fairly
peaceable. And after this man had stopped struggling, Socrates laid him out on
the bank to dry, and he went back to the market place.
After the young man had dried out a little bit, he came back to Socrates to
find the reason for this rather unusual behavior, Socrates said to him, "When
your head was under the water what was the one thing you wanted more than
anything else?" And the man said, "More than anything else, I wanted air."
Socrates said, "All right, when you want wisdom and learning like you wanted
air, you won't have to ask anybody to give it to you." Sterling W. Sill, BYU
Speeches, February 9, 1965, p.9
"Struggles In Our Lives"
A man found a cocoon of an emperor moth. He took it home so that he could
watch the moth come out of the cocoon. On the day a small opening appeared,
He sat and watched the moth for several hours as
the moth struggled to force its body through that little hole.
Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten
as far as it could and it could go no farther. It just seemed to be stuck.
Then the man, in his kindness, decided to help the moth, so he took a pair of
scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The moth then
emerged easily.
But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to
watch the moth because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would
enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in
time.
Neither happened! In fact, the little moth spent the rest of its life
crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to
fly.
What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the
restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the moth to get through the
tiny opening were God's way of forcing fluid from the body
of the moth into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it
achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Freedom and flight would only come
after the struggle. By depriving the moth of a struggle, he
deprived the moth of health.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us
to go through our life without any obstacles, He would cripple us. We would
not be as strong as what we could have been.
How true this is! How many times have we wanted to take the quick way out of
struggles and difficulties, to take those scissors and snip off the remaining
bits in an attempt to be free. We need to remember that
our loving Father will never give us more than we can bear and through our
trials and struggles we are strengthened as gold is refined in the fire.
"May we never let the things we can't have, or don't have, or shouldn't have,
spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have"

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) The Race
"The Race."
Quit, give up. You're beaten, they shouted at me and plead.
There's just to much against you now. This time you can't succeed.
And as I start to hang my head in front of failure's face,
My downward fall is broken by the memory of a race.
As memory stirs within my mind and hope recalls that scene,
Just the thought of that short race rejuvenates my being.
A child's race, young boys, young men, now I remember well.
Excitement sure, but also fear -- it wasn't hard to tell.
They all lined up, so full of hope -- each thought to win the race,
Or tie for first, and if not that, at least take second place.
And the fathers watched from afar, each cheering for his son.
And each boy hoped to show his Dad that he would be the one.
The whistle blew and off they went -- young hopes and hearts afire.
To win, to be the hero there was each young boy's desire.
And one boy in particular, whose Dad was in the crowd,
Was running near the lead and thought "My Dad will be so proud."
But as they sped down the field across the shallow dip,
The little boy who thought to win, lost his step and slipped.
Trying hard to catch himself, his hands flew out to brace,
But amid the laughter of the crowd, he fell flat on his face.
So down he fell and with him hope. He couldn't win it now.
Embarrassed, sad, he only wished to disappear somehow.
But as he fell, his father rose and showed his anxious face
Which to the boy so clearly said, "Get up and win the race."
He quickly rose, no damage done, behind a bit, that's all.
And ran with all his mind and might to make up for his fall.
So anxious to restore himself, to catch up and to win,
His mind went faster than his legs, and he slipped and fell again.
He wished that he had quit before with only one disgrace.
"I'm hopeless as a runner, now. I shouldn't try to race."
But as he searched amid the crowd, he found his father's face,
That steady gaze that said again, "Get up and win the race."
So up he rose to run once more, ten yards behind the last.
"If I'm to gain those yards," he thought, "I'll have to move real fast."
Exceeding everything he had he regained eight or ten,
But trying so hard to catch the lead, he slipped and fell again.
Defeat. He lay there silently, tear drops filled his eyes.
There's no sense in running anymore. Three strikes, I'm out, why try?
The will to rise had disappeared, all hope had fled away.
So far behind, so error prone. Loser all the way.
"I've lost, so what's the use," he thought. "I'll live with my
disgrace."
But then he thought about his Dad, who soon he'd have to face.
"Get up," an echo sound low. Get up and take your place.
You're not meant for failure here. Get up and win the race."
"Get up with borrowed will," it said. "You haven't lost at all,
For winning is no more than this; to rise each time you fall."
So up he rose to run once more, and with a new commit,
He resolved that, win or lose, at least he wouldn't quit."
So far behind the others now, the most he'd ever been.
But he gave it all he had, and ran as if to win.
Three times he'd fallen, stumbling. Three times he rose again.
Too far behind to hope to win, but he still ran to the end.
They cheered the winning runner when he crossed the line first place.
Head high, proud and happy, no falling or disgrace.
But when the fallen youngster crossed the line last place,
The crowd gave him the greater cheer for finishing the race.
And even though he came in last with head bowed low, unproud,
You'd thought that he had won the race to listen to the crowd.
And to his Dad he sadly said, "I didn't do so well."
"To me, you won," his father said. "You rose each time you fell."
And now when things seem darkened, hard and difficult to face,
The memory of this little boy helps me to win my race.
For all of life is like that race with ups and downs and all.
And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall.
Quit, give up . . . they still shout it in my face.
But a little voice within me says, "GET UP, AND WIN THIS RACE."

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) The Race -Reply

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Missionary work
Here is my conversion story... Hope this is what you wanted. I was 16 when I
joined. Kindof the shorter version
My sister Kelly was always searching for God. I, on the other hand was not
even sure that there was a God, let alone that He cared for me. When we were
teenagers she traveled from church to church and dragged me along. Most
churches were okay, but she would go for a while then decide that the church
did not have "it" so we moved on. I just wondered what "it" was! While on
her quest, a few things happened to sour me on any church. We went to a youth
group Sunday school. And the instructor asked me to read. I said no! Again
she asked, again I said no. I was not familiar with the language of the Bible
and did not want to read. She persisted. Finally I gave in. I read some
passage and read...
THE Holy SPRITE!!!! All the kids laughed at me. I refused to go back. I was
hurt and humiliated. But, my sister kept looking and soon she was again
bringing me to a different church.
Another church had us place big red stickers on our clothes as we were
entering the chapel for identifying visitors.. HA the minister in his sermon
said all those with red stickers were going to H... if they did not come
forward at that moment and be saved... Everyone in the chapel turned around
to find us sinners.... At that point I shrunk in my seat ripped off the
sticker and proceeded to turn around to help find those sinners with
stickers!!!! At this point I thought religion was crazy and wanted out...
Let her find it on her own!!!! I was never going to church!
A few weeks passed by and there was a knock on the door. My mother answered.
It was the missionaries! Was she looking for religion? No, She wasn't but
her daughter was. Kelly took the lessons and recognized the truth ... as she
was taught I peeked and thought WOW cute guys! She was soon baptized. Lucky
me, the Mormons picked her up and so I did not have to go to church!!! A
little celebration dance was in order!!! My sister changed. I was the ever
pest of a little sister and wondered why she no longer would swear or party...
So I made it my business to play the role of the tempter, I would push her
buttons so she would swear, Then say Kelly, your such a BAD MORMON and walk
away. Why, I wondered was she changing? What was so different about this
church? Why did she keep going? What was so special about this church?
The youth fellowshipped her. I would tag along occasionally until they pushed
the sports program!
I was hooked! But, they had this silly rule of once a month sacrament
attendance. Pretty soon the youth became my friends. I helped clear the land
for the chapel, But, I still wondered how long before my sister would switch
religions. As she had so many times before.
The leaders in the ward did their job sending missionaries to my house and I
went through several sets of missionaries.. The cuter they were, the more
discussions I had! :) I even invited my best friend to see these cute guys!
Oh the primping we would go through before they came!
But, soon because I was not serious, they stopped coming. After a year I
wanted to again take the lessons. I asked for them to come and not tell my
sister. They taught me a lesson and said Jesus created the earth! I thought
what nerve! I told them they were stupid because EVERYONE knows God created
the earth! They scripture referenced it and at that moment I thought I need
to listen to these young men. Maybe they knew more than I did. Maybe they
carried the truth.
I remember the challenge in Moroni. Kneeling down. Asking if this was indeed
truth. That sweet overwhelming feeling that YES, Joseph Smith was a prophet.
Yes, the Book of Mormon is the word of God. There is a prophet on the earth
today. There was a God! He heard my prayers! The yearning to be baptized.
Has it been easy? No, on my wedding day, leaving my mother to be married in
the temple and not to be able to share this day with her. My father
threatening to bash in the temple doors. Today, sadly my sister is Less
Active, I yearn to share those deep spiritual experiences with her, but am
held back. I was but 16 when I joined. My testimony today is richer, deeper.
I KNOW Christ is my Savior, my friend, my redeemer. He loves me, oh how He
loves me in all my imperfections. Oh how I love Him, and look forward to
embracing Him once again.
I am forever grateful to the youth leaders who encouraged me, the youth that
accepted me, even though my mother was living with her boyfriend and I came to
church smelling like smoke grateful to my sister who showed me the truth,
even though today she let go of the rod.. My life is richer and deeper
because of my knowledge of the Savior.
Hope this helps,
Pam in CO

I am still looking for "advice" regarding the Sons of Helaman and/or
PAL's programs. Our stake is looking into offering these next year for
youth conference and we'd appreciate some honest input/feedback from
those of you who have participated in these programs. What did you
like, what didn't you like, what do you wish had been a little
different?????
Thanks,
