There are a couple of good talk tapes on music. The first is by Michael
Ballam entitled Music and the Mind. It is an excellent informative tape.
Actually two tapes. It is a must. The second is by Jack Christenson called
Music and onions. Both of these tapes will give you and your youth insight
into what is going on.
Good Luck

Subject: (lds-yw) Talk Help
Thank-you to those wh have sent ideas for the YW in my ward that ask for
help in preparing her sacrament meeting talk. Her topic is
Friendshipping, Recognition and Nurturing, she received clarification
from the bishop today. They would like her to talk on this subject from
a missionary point of view. One of the ideas she had came from
something that the Sister Virginia Pierce spoke about at a training
session she conducted in our region. She told us that we needed to
treat the youth as if they were investigating the church. That the
youth were at a time in their lives when many of them were begin
"Converted" meaning it was a time they needed to gain a testimonies for
themselves. She told us that if the members of a ward would treat each
of the youth as if they were investigators that the youth would be able
to feel the Friendship and Nurturing of the ward members. I think this
is so true, if members of a ward would take time to talk to the youth
and would recognize their accomplishments and just make them feel that
they are loved and that they are missed when they are not there we could
make a difference. So If anyone has ideas for this YW that would help
her in this direction she would really appreciate the help. She would
like to speak as a youth to the ward and let them know that not only to
they need to Friendship and Nuture the adults in the ward but that they
also need to do the same for the Youth. That the members should not
just assume that a youth comes form a good family so that the ward does
not need to worry about them. But that youth, no matter what their
family background in the church is, are at a critucal time in there
lives, that they are making decissions that will possibily effect their
activity or inactivity in the church for the rest of their lives.
I heard a statement once and I cannot remember where it was it said
something to the effect that if you save one YW you will save
generations. If anyone has ever heard anything that sounds like that
she would like to have the quote and who gave it. Thank-you so much for
your willingness to share.

A good recipe for a layer cookie recipe is in the Lion House Cookbook.
We just moved, so I don't have mine out yet. Here it is from memory-If I
miss something maybe someone could look it up and correct me?
1 c graham cracker crumbs
1 c melted marg.
1 c coconut
1 c chocolate chips
1 c butterscotch chips
1 c chopped nuts
1 can swt. condensed milk
Melt Marg., press in crumbs to make crust. Layer remaining ingredients
in order given. Pour swt. cond. milk over top. Bake at 350 for 35 min
or until golden brown (Mine never take this long-but maybe that's just my
oven, so check after 20 or 25 min.) When you take them out run a knife
around outer edge and after a few minutes cut into bars.
These are really rich, and my family loves them. The ingredients can be
varied according to taste, peanut butter and chocolate chips are also
good.

Subject: (lds-yw) Misc. Ideas (long)
These are some activity ideas that were shared with me at a regional
training meeting from various wards...thought I'd pass them along.
Make and fill Christmas stockings for children in Florida that had been
affected by the devastating hurricane. (Now there are families affected
by fire)
"Where in the World is Waldo". The youth went to the mall to find 20
parents that were in disguise. After each spotting they were given a
clue to be put together at the end.
The Laurels honor a different woman in their ward each month. They take
turns doing this. They share with this woman any new skill or craft
they learned during that month, such as homemade goodies, handmade
baskets etc. When they present these gifts to the "honored woman" they
express to her how special she is and tell her what makes her special.
Put on a carnival at local children's hospital. A fireside was held the
week before to let the youth know what to expect. The ym/yw met the
following Sunday and discussed their feelings and experiences that they
had with this activity.
The ym/yw earned and donated money to purchase games for a family who
had lost their home to fire. When all the money was collected all the
youth went to the store to purchase the games, they delivered them along
with filled Christmas stockings.
"Being Chaste While Being Chased" This activity focused on proper
dating and avoiding Satan's lures. The speakers talked about creative
dating ideas and ways to handle awkward situations.
A progressive dinner where acts of service were performed between
courses. The acts of service could be determined by either the youth or
the leaders.
Secret date night for the Laurels. The Laurels each drew the name of
another Laurel and she chose a date for the girl whose name she had
drawn (a ym in the ward or stake). The date knew who he was going with,
but the Laurel didn't know until that night. They went to a park and
had a picnic (furnished by the Laurel class) and went ice blocking.
Each class adopted families in the community (names given by three local
schools) and helped to provide Christmas for them. This was such a
successful activity that the classes continue to provide service to
these families on a monthly basis.
Each girl was given a real name taken off a headstone at a nearby
cemetery. The girls went to the cemetery together to try to locate the
headstone belonging to the name on their card. After all the names were
located the girls did headstone rubbings then all went back to the
church where the girls showed their rubbings and tried to make up a life
story for the name they had. They needed to take into consideration the
year of birth, the age at death etc.
"Live Nativity Scene" The youth arranged with a non-member to use his
barn. The community was invited. The youth arranged for adults to be
Mary and Joseph, shepherds and wise men. The ym/yw were the Heavenly
Choir dressed in white sheets. A very cold night, but hearts were
warmed by the beautiful scene.
A guest speaker talked about some serious problems that many yw are
dealing with. She talked about anorexia, bulimia and signs of those
with suicidal tendencies. Not a fun topic, but very informative.
The girls had their parents determine what additions were needed for
their food storage. The girls went to the Bishop's Warehouse and
learned how to can using both types of machines. The girls canned
wheat, rice, hot cocoa, powered milk, soup mix and juice mix. The
parents had the opportunity to purchase some of the items canned. The
girls learned a lot, it was a successful activity.
"Heart Attack" The YW cut construction paper hearts, glued them to
plastic forks, then took them to a "special family" in the ward. They
stabbed the plastic forks into the front yard in the shape of a heart.
After doing this a heart shaped dessert was left on the doorstep. They
rang the doorbell and ran.
YM/YW service project. The YW baked desserts then they were auctioned
off to the YM. The YM bid in "minutes" rather than "money". Their time
was added up and recorded. At a later date all the YM were to provide a
service working off the minutes they had bid. The desserts had been
displayed before the auction so the YM knew what would be auctioned and
who made it.
YM/YW "Speech Night" We compiled a list of words and put them on
cards. The words ranged from serious to silly; for example testimony
and rubber band. Three words were given to three youth at a time. They
had about three minutes to prepare to give their one minute speech that
would include the three words. The youth helped each other when
necessary and encouraged each other when it was their turn to
participate.

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Talk Help
I think this is what you are talking about, President Gordon B. Hinckley
said it , Sept. 1988 Ensign, also found in Teaching of Pres. GBH, pg 723
"Youth is the season to set the directions for life. And in the case of
a young woman, her life will ve immeasurably enhanced if she is exposed
to and accepts those directions. Moreover, the posterity who follow
after her will more likely be reared in "the nurture and admonition of
the Lord" (Eph. 6:4, Enos 1:1) to their great benefit and blessing. When
we save a girl, we save generations. No one can foretell the
consequences of faithfulness in the life of a young woman.
It is important to emphasize the Aaronic Priesthood. It is important to
encourage Scouting. But it is every bit as important to see that
everything possible is done to afford every young woman in the Church an
opportunity for growth and development, training and activity that will
lead to faith, testimony and virtuous and happy living."

I don't know if you were on the list when this was sent through but
thought it was neat! I could not find silver dollars guess they don't
make them anymore but I got our girls $2.00 bills. I only have eight
girls so it was not too bad. But they do make the Susan B. Anthony
dollar that would be neat to give them. Like I said I don't know how
many girls you have or how much money left. I told them the story and
bore my testimony to them on the treasure they have in the gospel and
gave the ea. the money.
On a YW note ... sister Hinckley told a story yesterday that just
turned
on that light bulb inside! She told of growing up during the
depression
and how she remembers that her mother always carried a silver dollar
with
her ... she always made sure nothing happened to it and treated it as a
special possession. Then she said that we all have a silver dollar -
the
gospel. We need to take good care of it, make sure nothing happens to
it
... treat it as a special possession. What a great little message to
use
with the YW! As my two YW leader friends and I talked while stuck in
traffic on the way home, we jokingly argued about using the idea of
handing out silver dollars to the YW ... I told them they couldn't use
it
because it was my idea and we were going to use it as a stake YW
presidency
message or at camp, and they wanted to use it in a lesson next week!!

stay on once ironed and they went around and got them autographed from
the friends they had made! Pillow cases are so easy and fast to make as
well. Oh we also put a cute little design on them something about
friends and two little girls holding hands. They just loved them! But
I think they would love just having them without anything on them if you
don't have time for that as well.

Subject: (lds-yw) Message in a Bottle
We tried this with our girls and they loved it, so I thought I would share ...
For our upcoming swim party, each girl was given an invitation via a "message
in a bottle". The bottles were empty single size water bottles. We made and
glued on a label on the outside that said "There is a message in this bottle
for (girls name)". Inside the bottle was a rolled up invite to the party,
sand (purchased at a toy store), and seashells. The girls loved them, but the
best part was because a bottle had been done for each girl on the roster,
after we handed them out, the bottles for the less active girls were left on
the table. We didn't have enough for everyone who wanted to deliver a message
to a less active girl! They just thought it would be so fun to take that to
someone else.
While I'm on the subject of the swim party, does anyone have any fun pool
games? We are having a goldfish hunt (prizes to those who can catch the
goldfish released into the pool), but would love some other ideas!
Thanks so much - Jennifer in CA

You can get $1 coins at the post office (around here at least.) When I
put in bills and buy stamps out of the machine in the loby it gives them
as change. I will put in a $20 get a $2.40 book of stamps and have $17

They are real goldfish. You just put them in the pool at the start of the
game (I don't think they would live if you put them in much earlier). So they
are swimming all around, and it is quite funny to watch people trying to catch
them.

They had a very extensive high and low ropes course, they included all types
of group cooperation activities, they incorporated our theme into the
instruction. Thye also had trek supplies and paddle boats and canoes and
volleyball for those not directly involved in the course at a particular
time. They rotatated the youth as we had too many for the course all at
once, the youth actually did ropes for 4 hours each. The course was the
CLAS ropes course on center street towards Utah Lake.

It looks like it would be a easy song for the girls to learn. We
are going to have the girls learn it in their wards, we will have
them practice it together as a stake once before the WWC and then have
the girls sing this at the Celebration.
