Subject: (lds-yw) Challenge Rope Course
Stacey-
Thanks so much for the info on the rope course. I'd seen the title before but
never understood. It sounds so neat. Could you send the name, address,
and/or phone # for the one you went to? Where at in Washington is it? I
think it would be too far a drive for us, but we go up there sometimes as a
family. It sounds like the people taking you through add tremendously to the
experience. Does anyone know of a similar course in Idaho or Utah? Thanks
for any help. I'm thinking ahead to next summer's Youth Conference.

A variation on sand candles is ice candles. (Great alternative if you
aren't at the beach or don't want to haul sand.)
Fill cardboard milk cartons with ice cubes and pour hot wax over the ice
cubes. (If you have plenty of wax, use big cartons; otherwise use one
serving cartons!) The wax cools, the ice melts and you pour the water out
of the holes left by the ice cubes. This makes a very interestingly
designed candle. (Don't forget to attach the wick.)

Ga, I heard they have one here in Salt Lake at Fort Douglas. We are talking
about doing it for Youth Conference next year. My hubby did one once, too,
with the youth. When he gets back in town I will get details.

I know this subject is past it's prime but I had to relate an experience that we had
regarding our snipe hunt we had this year. The girls planned a snipe hunt and it was
well supervised by numerous adult leaders including myself. Each ward was invited
and all attended except one. Jonesboro, AR falls in our stake and they would not
participate. Their leaders strictly told them to stay in their tents. I didn't
quite understand until the next day. I went on the hike and walked with their
leader.
She explained that her girls were mad at her, and she was really upset about that,
but she has a couple of girls that were caught in the middle of the school shooting
rampage. They have been through a tremendous amount of counseling and she was afraid
that being out in the middle of a dark field would dredge up memories that they are
trying to forget. She shed a whole new light on the subject and all the girls were
sorry they didn't understand that night. It made us really think about the
circumstances and appreciate this leader for her concern. Diana

I can give the info... I just need to collect it back from the couple in my
ward I gave it too. I'll have them bring it Sunday. It is at the Whidbey
Institute on Whidbey Island. It is a 20 minute ferry ride from Mulkiteo Ferry,
which is 30 minutes north of Seattle. YES, the couple added so much to it. But
then again... I haven't been to any others to compare. There has GOT to be
some in Idaho or Utah. And it would be great for families or anyone. (One
MiaMaid was even saying she wants to have her birthday party there!!! I don't
know if they do birthday parties! ▄)
I'll post the info. to the list on Sunday evening!

Subject: (lds-yw) new to young women
Hello,
I feel as though I am in a disaster. I have been called as first
councillor in young women a month ago. Last Sunday was the first time
we; as a new branch, had young women to teach. This Sunday the young
women might be there again ( they are inactives) and I was asked to
prepare a lesson. We have no lesson manuals and my young women
president is not going to be there this Sunday. I'm really stuck. I am
a convert so I never really did the young woman's program before and
so I am wondering if it is ok to use the family home evening manual. I
really need to know before Sunday.
You can reach me at

Misty,
I know what that girl is going through. I lived it. My mother is an
abusive person, my older sister has a child out of marriage, and my
younger sis ter is a prostitue. It's really tough for me because my my
older sisters baby is also my god child.
There are some ways in which oyu can get her out, but it has to be
done willingly by herself. It is all based on the girls mentality. You
need to know if she is being abused and what is she learning from her
sisters. The one thing people tend to forget is...what have her
parents been telling her she can amount to. For example, my mother
used to take a dictionary, put it on the top of my younger sisters
head then slam her fist on it. After which came the words "your onnly
a prostitue and that's all you will ever be" (these words have been
modified) So after years of being told this, my sister amounted to
what she was giuven confidence to do. What I am trying to say is, this
girl you are talking about might have been programed to be like her
sisters, because that is what her parents have taught her to be.
Unfortunately, the only way you can help her is to get her out of the
broken home and show her who she really is.
My advise is to keep praying. I'll help for her too pray as well.
Good luck sister. Just remember through all the hard times God is
there to help you.
:)

"I HAVE LEARNED"
I'VE LEARNED that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be
someone who can be loved.....The rest is up to them
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care
back
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt
you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that
I'VE LEARNED that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want
to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have
I'VE LEARNED that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at
first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to takes
its place
I'VE LEARNED that there are people who love you dearly, but just don't
know how to show it
I'VE LEARNED that true friendship continues to grow, even over the
longest distance. Same goes for true love
I'VE LEARNED that although the word "love" can have many different
meanings, it loses value when overly used
I'VE LEARNED that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences
you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many
birthdays you've celebrated
I'VE LEARNED that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself
I'VE LEARNED that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world
doesn't stop for your grief
I"V E LEARNED that our background and circumstances may have influenced
who we are, but we are responsible for who we become
I'VE LEARNED That sometimes when my friends fight, I'm forced to choose
sides even when I don't want to
I'VE LEARNED That just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they
don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean
they do
I'VE LEARNED That sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their
actions
I'VE LEARNED That we don't have to change friends if we understand that
friends change
I'VE LEARNED That you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It
could change your life forever
I'VE LEARNED That two people can look at the exact same thing and see
something totally different
I'VE LEARNED That no matter the consequences, those who are honest with
themselves get farther in life
I'VE LEARNED That no matter how many friends you have, if you are their
pillar you will feel lonely and lost at the times you need them the most
I'VE LEARNED That even when you think you have no more to give, when a
friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help
I'VE LEARNED That credentials on the wall DO NOT make you a decent human
being
I'VE LEARNED That it's hard to determine where to draw the line between
being nice and not hurting people's feelings and standing up for what you
believe
I'VE LEARNED That it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to
destroy it
I'VE LEARNED That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.
I'VE LEARNED That money is a lousy way of keeping score
I'VE LEARNED That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and
have the best time
I'VE LEARNED That either you control your attitude or it controls you
I'VE LEARNED That it's not what you have in your life but who you have in
your life that counts
I'VE LEARNED That you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes.
After that, you had better know something
I'VE LEARNED That it's taking me a long time to become the person I want
to be
I'VE LEARNED That you can keep going long after you think you can't
I'VE LEARNED That learning to forgive takes practice
I'VE LEARNED That writing, as well as talking, can ease emotional pains.

Sure you can use the Family Home Evening Manual, even the Relief Society one.

A really good source for lesson material is the New Era - the topics are
timely, and it is geared for young women. I hope you have manuals on order
though, they are invaluable! If you can't find anyone with a New Era, check
the Ensign also. If there is a particular subject that you are wanting to
teach on, I'm sure if you post that on this list, you will get lots of stories
and ideas to use. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks Judy,
I just thought that the Relief Society and FHE books were for their
purpose only, I didn't know that you can use them for other purposes.
doesn't it show, I've never had a teaching calling before?
:)

Thank you Jennifer,
My husband has recently ordered the New Era and the Enzine so they
won't be in until August. It doesn't make long we are married and it
makes just about the same time that I have this calling so you can
imaging the mess I'm in at this moment. Surely things will straighten
out soon.
Thank oyu for your help.
