Jeanette,
In my last Stake we had a STRICT Sunday dress dance standard and although
some youth complained, we NEVER had a problem with attendance. We were in
a Tri-Stake region and the other 2 Stakes in our area allowed more casual
clothing. The youth THEMSELVES told us that they preferred our dances
because things often got out of hand at the other dances.. rough housing,
"mosh"ing, even profanity. It may not be popular at first, but I STRONGLY
support Sunday dress at Church dances.

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Personal Progress Thoughts
Chris,
Welcome to YW!!! I too share your feelings regarding the importance of
the Personal Progress program. I have given several lessons on motivating
the girls to participate and to acheive the Young Womanhood Recognition
Award.
Beehives are at a great age because they are SO excited to be moving up
from Primary and to be included with the Youth. Their natural enthusiasum
is a big bonus in getting them interested in Personal Progress.
For our New Beginnings we had a "Color your Rainbow" theme that was
originally done in the Monroe Utah Stake. Following is the basic outline we
used:
The room was decorated with a HUGE rainbow on one wall and with helium
balloons in all of the Value Colors. We also served a cake decorated with a
rainbow.
First, a YW Leader spoke briefly about the YW Program and Personal Progess,
explaining how it works and using quotes from the Personal Progress Book.
This took about 10-15 minutes. We then had the presentation of the rainbow.
A YW Leader: Purple, Yellow, Orange, Green, Red, Blue and White... I can
see a Rainbow, yes, see the rainbow when I look at you. The colors in
yourlives can blend and you can become a glowing rainbow within yourself,
glowing and ready to tackle new horizons. Let's share how this rainbow can
become you.
(Each of the Value Colors was assigned to a different Young Woman to read
and present. The rainbow on the wall was only an outline and as each YW
read her color, she filled in the color on our rainbow with a pre-made piece
of the rainbow.)
YW: PURPLE-INTEGRITY: This is the constant color, the color that suggests
moral courage that makes your actions consistent with your knowledge of
right and wrong. This color shines to others as you become an example to
follow.
YW: YELLOW-GOOD WORKS: This color comes and glows from the giving,
sharing, the service that you render. It may be from gifts you give and
love you show to family, friends and others. Nurture others and build the
kingdom through righteous service.
YW: ORANGE-CHOICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY: Happiness and peace in life come
from service to our Heavenly Father. Choose to serve the Lord with all you
have. Enjoy the good things our Father has given us. Be accountable for
your action and remain free from worldly evils. Use your free agency to
make proper choices.
YW: GREEN-KNOWLEDGE: Green in a growing color. When you see the green of
the world, you know that nature is alive and growing. So should we be. We
need to study, learn, and acquire many talents and skills so that we
discover all that Heavenly Father gave to us. There are very few things
that we can return to our Heavenly Father with, but we CAN return with our
knowledge. Seek opportunities to learn and grow.
YW: RED-INDIVIDUAL WORTH: I am of infinite worth. I have spirit and
courage. I desire to soar. You have your own dreams, your own experiences.
Your worth is great in the sight of others and in the sight of God.
YW: BLUE-DIVINE NATURE: The blue of the rainbow is like the blue of the
sky. You have no limits nor boundaries. You are a daughter of God. You
have inherited divine qualities. You have the potential to develop these
qualities. The joy lies in what you can become. Do not limit yourself.
(The YW presenting the color white placed a big white cloud next to the
rainbow)
YW: And now to the white of our rainbows. Out of the clouds your rainbow
has grown. WHITE- FAITH: Faith in the living God. Knowing that I am a
daughter of God has helped my rainbow to shine. I will have faith. I will
help it grow by prayer, study, and staying close to my Father in Heaven. I
will let my faith show by keeping my Heavenly Father's commandments. I am a
daughter of God! I too may shine for the world to see!
YW Leader: Each young woman's rainbow is her symbol of faith. A reflection
of light, the light within each young woman shining into the world. Now is
your time to build your glowing rainbow.
ALL REPEAT THE YOUNG WOMEN THEME
We presented each YW with a packet that included a cross-stitch pattern for
a rainbow with the YW Values on it and the following poem written by Sister
Debra M. Christiansen:
A RAINBOW ALL YOU OWN
The Lord has painted a rainbow
And placed it in the sky.
As a sign throughout the ages
To generations passing by.
There is naught can touch it's beauty,
It's elegance and grace.
The sentiments it brings to heart,
The smile upon our face.
Within this glorious rainbow,
Each color- every hue
Has something greater than color-
They are endowed with value.
FAITH abounds within the rainbow,
Within the color white,
Which gives to each and every soul.
The hope of Christ, our light.
The Lord has made the rainbows.
The Lord has made us too.
We are DIVINE in NATURE
Divine- the color blue.
Independant, bright and strong.
That is the color red.
Show forth our INDIVIDUAL WORTH.
"Be bold!" the Lord has said.
Peaceful and quiet, a rainbow.
Aware- and yet serene,
Looking o'er all the world about
KNOWLEDGE is much like green.
Orange for ACCOUNTABILITY.
You choose what you must do.
Let that which you sow and harvest,
Be the reminder of this hue.
A rainbow brightens up the day
Of each and every fellow.
Let your GOOD WORKS be just the same
As bright and sunny yellow.
Deepest of each of the colors,
In a rainbow that we see
Is the noble color purple,
The hue of INTEGRITY.
The Lord has painted a rainbow,
And painted it with care.
All of the glorious colors
Have been included there.
Take each of the colors given,
Each Value try to hone,
Someday you'll awaken and find
A rainbow all your own.
It turned our to be a wonderful evening. The parents all caught the vision
of Personal Progress as well as the girls. I also have ideas on keeping
girls motivated. Let me know if you are interested and I'll post those too.
Sorry this was so long winded... hope I didn't make too many typos!!! :-)

Jeanette,
I think if you all (Stake Presidency) pray about your decision as half and
half - you will get a good feeling or a bad feeling. Then you will know
what to do from there. My own personal belief is that you made a good
choice. Just make sure that you stick to your decision once it is made.

I just moved from a stake where we had strictly dress dances. I like them.
They seem more, important, you know. Now I moved to a stake where they are
all casual except for regional and Tri-stake dances. The best part about
casual dances are that you can dance more and have more fun. I like both
options and I think your best bet is 1/2 and 1/2. The attendance at the
strictly dress stake is greater during Youth Conference because of one casual
dance. The attendance for casual at my new stake is always pretty good.
Either one, I'm sure the youth will enjoy, just because they're with their
friends. Good Luck!!

Kay,
We had a "POP" for Personal Progress Night where we had a popcorn bar and
had stations for each Value with goal they could either finish in one night
or at least get started on.
We used the idea out of the Bright Impressions YW Leadership Ideas by
Sabina Bigelow and Sabina Susan Bytheway. Here's the program:
(Have popping corn in the background so it can be heard and smelled while
you are talking)
LEADER: First of all I would like everyone to make yourself as
comfortable as you can. So settle back, CLOSE YOUR EYES, and try hard to
imagine everything just as I say. OK? Here we go. Imagine you are at home
in your own kitchen. Are you there? It's dark and you are standing by the
light switch. When I tell you to, reah over and turn the light on- but for
now use your imagination and you will be able to see everything in your
kitchen. All right, now turn on the lights. In your mind look around.
Look at your cupboards, your walls, the pattern on the floor. Can you see
the sink? ... the stove?... Now, go to where the pans are kept and get a
large, heavy pan with a lid... place it on the stove... find your oil.. open
the lid and pour 1/4 cup of oil into the pan... put the lid on the pan and
put the oil away. Return to the stove ...turn the heat on to medium high.
Find the popcorn... watch the oil in the pan... is it getting hot? Wait a
minute until it gets hot enough to almost smoke. Is is ready?? Pour about
1/2 cup of the popcorn kernals into the oil... shake it so it covers the
bottom of the pan... replace the lid.. now wait!! Listen carefully. It's
beginning to sizzle...it getting hotter. You can smell the popcorn
now...pop pop pop pop... popping faster now.. steam is pouring out of the
pan around the edges of the lid... shake it faster, faster....pop pop pop
pop... it's slowing down now, popping slower and slower. It must be
finished.. ahhh! Can you smell the aroma of hot popcorn? It smells sooo
good! Take it off the heat and pour it in a large bowl. Do you see that
small cup with melted butter in it? Pour some over the popcorn and stir...
don't forget the salt... taste it... does it need more? Go ahead and add
more if you want, we want this to taste JUST RIGHT! Stir again, it's ready
to eat!!! Go ahead, reach right in and take a handful...MMMMMMMM!! That's
right, eat it up... it tastes great! Now open your eyes. (Pass around a
bowl of popcorn now) Everyone take some as it comes around. (Wait until
everyone has had some) Did it taste as good as you thought it would when
you were imagining the popcorn being made? Let me tell you about popcorn.
All corn kernels have starch in them. They have a little water in them too.
Popcorn kernels have a thick tough skin on the outside. When you heat the
popcorn kernels, the water inside turns to steam. The steam expands on the
inside and starts to push against the tough outer skin. And the hotter the
steam gets the more it pushes. Soon the kernels explode and you suddenly
see the whole white insides and smell the tantalizing aroma, and your tummy
knows that popcorn is popping! That's how we are. We want to be
enthusiasticm but we often sit around all together like tough hard little
kernels... Let's all join together and jump into the hot pan so we become so
full of enthusiam about Personal Progress that we're ready to burst!!
There's nothing that can shoe enthusiasm as well as popped corn!!!"
Each Value had it's own station with a sign that said "POP! for INTEGRITY,
"POP" for FAITH, etc. We drew a cute little piece of popcorn with a happy
face on each poster. Each girl was to visit each station and choose one
goal from a list to begin and/or complete that night. The girls were
allowed to attend the stations in any order. If they didn't like any of the
suggested goals at a station, they had to commit to a different goal for
that value. Each station was "manned" by a YW leader or volunteering
parent. We gave a 10 minute limit at each station and announced when it was
time to rotate. Before closing prayer, we had a brief summary of the night
and invited the girls to "Come Unto Christ" by perfecting themselves through
goal setting throughout their lives and pointing out that Personal Progress
can help them acheive that. The girls really enjoyed it and got alot
accomplished. The goals we used at each station follow:
KNOWLEDGE: Personal Progress Book pg. 35 #7
pg. 50
#4
pg. 62
#6
FAITH: " " " pg. 59 #9
Talk to the full-time missionaries about faith,
Ask them for some of their favorite scriptures
about faith. Choose 2 and copy them onto a 3X5
card. Memorize them and recite them to your
parents or a YW Leader.
INDIVIDUAL WORTH: P.P. Book pg. 23 #8
Write a thank you letter to someone who has made
a real difference in your life.
Make a list of things you like about yourself.
Display
it somewhere that you can see it everyday and
READ it
everyday for 2 weeks. Add to it too!
GOOD WORKS: We had them vote for an upcoming Service General
Activity: Sub for Santa, Service Scavenger

>>
>>
>>
Following is the basic outline
>we
>>used:
>>
>> The room was decorated with a HUGE rainbow on one wall and with helium
>>balloons in all of the Value Colors. We also served a cake decorated with
>a
>>rainbow.
>>
>>First, a YW Leader spoke briefly about the YW Program and Personal
Progess,
>>explaining how it works and using quotes from the Personal Progress Book.
>>This took about 10-15 minutes. We then had the presentation of the
rainbow.
>>
Let's share how this rainbow
can
>>become you.
>>
>>(Each of the Value Colors was assigned to a different Young Woman to read
>>and present. The rainbow on the wall was only an outline and as each YW
>>read her color, she filled in the color on our rainbow with a pre-made
>piece
>>of the rainbow.)
>>
>>YW: PURPLE-INTEGRITY: This is the constant color, the color that
suggests
>>moral courage that makes your actions consistent with your knowledge of
>>right and wrong.
When you see the green
of
>>the world, you know that nature is alive and growing.
You have your own dreams, your own
experiences.
>>
will
>>help it grow by prayer, study, and staying close to my Father in Heaven.
I
>>will let my faith show by keeping my Heavenly Father's commandments. I am
>a
>>daughter of God! I too may shine for the world to see!
>>
>>YW Leader: Each young woman's rainbow is her symbol of faith. A
>reflection
>>of light, the light within each young woman shining into the world. Now
is
>>your time to build your glowing rainbow.
>>
>>ALL REPEAT THE YOUNG WOMEN THEME
>>
>>We presented each YW with a packet that included a cross-stitch pattern
for
>>a rainbow with the YW Values on it and the following poem written by
Sister
>>Debra M. Christiansen:
>>
>> A RAINBOW ALL YOU OWN
>>
>> The Lord has painted a rainbow
>> And placed it in the sky.
>> As a sign throughout the ages
>> To generations passing by.
>>
>> There is naught can touch it's beauty,
>> It's elegance and grace.
>> The sentiments it brings to heart,
>> The smile upon our face.
>>
>> Within this glorious rainbow,
>> Each color- every hue
>> Has something greater than color-
>> They are endowed with value.
>>
>> FAITH abounds within the rainbow,
>> Within the color white,
>> Which gives to each and every soul.
>> The hope of Christ, our light.
>>
>> The Lord has made the rainbows.
>> The Lord has made us too.
>> We are DIVINE in NATURE
>> Divine- the color blue.
>>
>> Independant, bright and strong.
>> That is the color red.
>> Show forth our INDIVIDUAL WORTH.
>> "Be bold!" the Lord has said.
>>
>> Peaceful and quiet, a rainbow.
>> Aware- and yet serene,
>> Looking o'er all the world about
>> KNOWLEDGE is much like green.
>>
>> Orange for ACCOUNTABILITY.
>> You choose what you must do.
>> Let that which you sow and harvest,
>> Be the reminder of this hue.
>>
>> A rainbow brightens up the day
>> Of each and every fellow.
>> Let your GOOD WORKS be just the same
>> As bright and sunny yellow.
>>
>> Deepest of each of the colors,
>> In a rainbow that we see
>> Is the noble color purple,
>> The hue of INTEGRITY.
>>
>> The Lord has painted a rainbow,
>> And painted it with care.
>> All of the glorious colors
>> Have been included there.
>>
>> Take each of the colors given,
>> Each Value try to hone,
>> Someday you'll awaken and find
>> A rainbow all your own.
>>
>>It turned our to be a wonderful evening. The parents all caught the

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Laurel Projects
One of my graduating laurels just completed her projects. They were
great. The first one was tutoring first graders in reading. The second
was volunteering at the hospital. The third was making a quilt. She
bought used flannel shirts and cut 4X4 squares and pieced them together
and backed it with fleece. It was gorgeous. Her fourth project was
baking homemade bread for our sacrament meetings. Our ward was not
informed of this until we presented her medallions last week. Several
people commented that they had noticed the homemade bread and wondered
who was making it.
Another laurel compiled a booklet of music for each of our YW. She wrote
and got permission to copy music that was copyrighted. It was a great
project.
I hope this gives you some ideas!
