Judy, we are with you in this terrible heat! I'm from Tennessee. We've played your
water game as a volleyball game outside. We also played water balloon baseball. Use
a wiffle ball and bat and when the batter hits the ball everyone in the outfield runs
for an ice cooler at the pitchers mound to grab a water balloon. They have to hit
the runner before she gets to a base.
We also have done water dodge ball. We used 4 kiddie pools filled with water as the
bases and home plate. You play dodge ball but you must sit in the kiddie pool as you
are running the bases.

Sorry to hear about all the terrible heat- in California we are okay, so far.
Our turn will be coming I'm sure.
About the water games, we just recently used water balloon volleyball at a
park, after a combined service project at out local library. The kids paired
up and used towels to toss the balloons back and forth. They loved it, it was
lots of fun. If there are those who haven't tried it- its great- and very low
cost! Gayle B in Ca

Subject: (lds-yw) YM Survey
Hi everyone!
Last week I said that I would poll the YM at our regional youth
conference on what they would look for in a wife ... it was really fun!
Since I was involved in the planning and execution of this conference I
really didn't have too much time on my hands to do this and we kept the
youth entertained about 90% of the time - except for lunch and dinner ... I
polled during the lunch hour and some questions were answered by groups of
3-4 YM. It was really interesting to hear what these YM had to say! I
actually asked them for the top 5-10 things they would look for in a wife
... I kept emphasizing the most important things ... hoping that they would
put "strong testimony" or "member of the church" in the top 5 (especially
the YM from my stake!) ... very, very, few guys even mentioned anything
like that! Was the original survey taken in Utah or somewhere out West?!?
Anyway, I almost hugged the two YM from Morristown who put Testimony,
morally clean, and obedient to commandments as the top three! Before I
post the results I would like to just tell you all what a wonderful
experience this YC was! We had about 410 youth from half of NJ and it was
well worth the amount of time and effort put into the organization ...
maybe I was in my own little world the whole time but I thought everything
ran so smoothly and the kids had a good time and a great experience! We
had a couple of men on the committee that really weren't sold on the idea
of having a regional conference because of the large numbers and the small
space but the youth thrive on being together ... it's well worth all the
headaches, and exhaustion! After the youth were gone and the building was
all clean and my car was loaded I drove to a friend's house a couple of
miles away and just collapsed - an hour later I couldn't get up to walk -
every bone and muscle in my body ached!! I was so involved in directing
one of the service projects that I have no idea how the workshops went, or
how good the speakers were ... I only hoped the youth were able to bond and
learn something. I had to go out of town for a 3 day meeting and when I
returned home last night there was the sweetest note from the YW in one of
our branches telling me what a good time they had and thanking me for being
their stake YW president - just when I really felt like sitting down and
giving up because my one counselor was released and the other is
non-functioning and I am left all alone for awhile to put together next
weeks Super Saturday and work on next months girls camp ... a note like
that gave me the extra push I desperately need right now!!

Even if not many tell you -- I'm sure the majority of the youth appreciate
the time and effort you made to put on such a conference. Here in our area
of England nothing like that is done. My daughter (15) would really love to
have an activity to go to where there were more than a couple dozen youth
present. We have 9 active YM/YW in our ward -- at stake activities they are
lucky to have 30-40 present. I'm driving her tonight to a tri-stake dance
that is an hour away where there will probably be 90 or so there. Dances
like tonights are not encouraged here and I'm not sure tonights has the
official okay from the powers on high, but we're going anyway! To be to a
conference with over 400 youth present would be heaven for her. These youth
want to associate with other youth -- the more the better. Well done for
all your efforts.

I have used fabric and stapled in to the board so the fabric is the
background. Also wrapping paper works great! When I did the fabric
well that is what I have up now, it was white matterial with white roses
on it I used ribbon and the cheep lace you can buy at Wal-Mart in the
packages to go around the edges to hide the rough edges!
The stapler works great to put all this stuff up!
Good luck

This is a true story that the youth might be able to relate with. When
this
YW as a senior in high school she had many non-member friends. (There
were
only about 5 LDS students in her class.) One Friday word spread through
the
H.S. that Kevin was having a party at his house Saturday night because
his
parents were out of town. Kevin himself invited the YW to come to the
party. Luckily, the YW had a job at a pizza place and had to work until
closing Saturday night. She was able to use that excuse for not going.
Before she could finish giving her excuse, Kevin said it would be ok if
the
YW came late, she could be the designated driver. The YW thought this
was a
perfect way to get to go and be with her friends and not be pressured to
drink alcohol.
That Saturday night after work, the YW headed to Kevin's house. The
first
thing she saw when she walked in the door was her best friend
(non-member)
passed out, drunk on the floor. The YW had a couple of guys carry the
friend into a bedroom where the YW sat with her friend for almost an
hour.
The YW held an empty coffee can while her friend threw up in it, the YW
wiped her friends face with a wash rag, and she cleaned the vomit off
the
carpet and off her own shoes. Just as the YW decided to have her friend
moved to a car so she could drive her home, she heard some yell, "The
cops
are here!!". The YW, knowing she had done nothing wrong...legally,
decided
to stay in the bedroom with her friend until the police left then she
would
drive her friend home. Just when the YW thought things had quieted
down,
she heard a knock on the door. A sheriff's deputy filled the doorway.
He
was as tall and his shoulders as wide as the door frame. He asked what
the
story was in that room. The YW told the officer what had happened, that
she
had come out to be a designated driver and that she had spent the entire
time caring for her friend. The officer told the YW to wait in the room
until he came back. After about 10 minutes he came back and helped the
YW
get her friend to the car. As he finished buckling the friend in the
car he
told the YW that the friend was lucky to have a friend like her. The YW
didn't think she was so lucky. She thought a real good friend would
have
talked her into not going in the first place instead of telling her
she'd
come and drive her home.
The next morning, Sunday, the YW sat in sacrament next to her mother.
The
YW's uncle was the bishop and conducting sacrament meeting that day. He
welcomed everyone and then said "We would like to welcome a new family
to
our ward. Dan and Wendy Anderson, would you stand up?" The YW looked
in
the bench behind her at the Anderson's. Brother Anderson was a tall
man,
about as big as a door frame. Yes, it was him. The same sheriff's
deputy
that had just hours before given the YW the break of her life. The YW
shrank in her seat as the deputy patted her shoulder as he sat down.
Nobody
else in that chapel knew their secret. How relieved and disappointed at
the
same time this YW felt. Relieved that she was there to help her friend,
and
relieved that she didn't drink alcohol...yet disappointed that this new
member in her ward had seen her is such a compromising setting. 10
years
later that YW wishes she could turn the clock back and never go to the
party
at all...trust me, the guilt and shame that I felt will never be worth
the
hour of acceptance I felt from my peers. ;)
***An interesting note to this true story***Eight years later, Brother
Anderson (the deputy) baptized my Friend who was passed out, drunk at
that
party. My friend has told me that when the Elder's came to her door,
she
was a wife, and a mother and wanted her family to have what I had. When
she
told me that I wanted to shrink again. You never never never know when
your
choices and actions will plant a seed. How easily my example as an LDS
Saint could have been tarnished. I had nothing to do with her actual
conversion, the part I played was eight years earlier. I am only
tooting my
own horn because that is the only "cool" story that I have had anything
to
do with in my whole life ▄▄▄▄

These are the lessons our ward chose for the value Good Works. Someone
else posted the experiences for lessons 3 and 20, #'s 19 and 21 are what
I just came up with -- granted I can get carried away with this, and
there are probably others that should be listed and some you may not
think shoud be there.
It was interesting that we put lessons about Missionary work under the
value of Good Works, but that the experiences that develop this
particular area of Good Works are found values such as Faith, Divine
Nature, Choice and Accountability...... What a tapestry we are weaving!

definitely get her together with hundreds of other church members. Does she

Shiela,
Don't short-change yourself! I had to laugh out loud when I read that because
I sometimes feel like that myself when I am planning a lesson and wishing I
could think of some personal great story to tell the YW. It is always so much
more interesting to them to have a PERSONAL story to tell.... and then I think
how BORING I must be to not have all these "cool" stories to tell like others.
Trust me. You have them too. ▄ If you are like me, you just aren't great at
remembering them! But they are there. Working in Young Women's has helped me
to "remember" them... and slowly I'm realizing that I do have a few stories of
my own. When you remember one... WRITE IT DOWN!
Kids will help give you lots of stories too. Thanks for sharing your story.

Another story about how important it is to not even give appearance of doing
wrong.
The family that converted us has a BEAUTIFUL oldest daughter (who is on her
mission to Vina Del Mar Chile right now). When she was a senior in high
school she went to a party at a non-member house. There was a keg of beer
there. Her friends knew that she didn't drink alcohol so they gave her a
glass of ginger ale in a plastic cup. The next day it swarmed through
school that Stephanie had been drinking beer at the party the night before.
Everyone had seen her. Parents heard from their kids and finally one mother
called Stephanie's mom to break the news to her that her daughter was not the
perfect child they thought she was. The mom was VERY upset that her daughter
had obviously not learned all the lessons they had taught. She spent the
afternoon crying and praying. When she confronted Stephanie that night she
learned the truth, that it had just been ginger ale(she promised tearfully).
They learned a lesson on appearances that has stayed with them to this day.
That one incidence left a lasting impression with many non-member kids, that
still believed what they saw! Drink soda out of a can so everyone knows what
it is! Do not go to parties where there is alcohol! Or making out! Or
drugs!

Subject: (lds-yw) I need Help with Testimony Lesson!!!
I have been asked to substitute is Relief Society and the lesson that I have
been asked to give is on "How to bear your Testimony in Sacramento Meeting".
I have several talks on the mechanics of testimony bearing, but I feel that
the lesson is too instructive and lacks inspiration. If anyone has some
inspirational story/stories that they could share with me I would greatly
appreciate. Oh, the lesson is THIS SUNDAY!!! I have exhausted all my
resources and am now currently looking through all of my old Ensigns.
Thank you for your help.

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) Unity of Saints
I gave a talk on Unity about a year ago. Here are my notes. The YW program
helps YW come unto Christ, keep their baptismal covenants, and prepare to
make temple covenants. Those things are all unifying (as clarified below).
Psalms 133:1
A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant [it is] for
brethren to dwell together in unity!
Brothers and Sisters, I would like to discuss with you today how keeping our
baptismal and temple covenants can increase the unity we feel in our
families, ward, and Church in general. First, letÆs remind ourselves what
our baptismal covenants include. Some good places to look to find our
baptismal covenants include the sacrament prayers in the Doctrine and
Covenants and Mosiah chapter 18 starting at verse 8.
Turn with me to D & C 20:77
The sacrament is a renewal of our baptismal covenants. Notice that we
promise to eat the bread and drink the water 'in remembrance of the body of
[Christ].' We also show when we are baptized that we 'are willing to take
upon them the name of [Christ] and always remember him.' Finally we promise
to 'keep his commandments.' In return for keeping this covenant, we "may
always have his Spirit to be with them." That is not a wishy-washy promise.
To constantly have the Holy Ghost with us is a choice blessing. To always
have His Spirit means that we will be guided to do all things what we should
do. Always having His Spirit with us could also be termed being one with
the Holy Ghost.
Christ teaches us in 3 Nephi 11:27 that "the Father, and the Son, and the
Holy Ghost are one; and I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and the
Father and I are one." We know that this does not mean one in body, but one
in purpose, or they are unified. If we live our lives, by keeping our
baptismal covenants, that we may always have the Holy Ghost with us, then we
are part of that unified group: We will be one with the Father, the Son and
the Holy Ghost.
This is not only a nice idea. Christ prayed to the Father several times,
both in the Old World and the New, that his disciples would become one with
Him and His Father. In 3 Nephi 19:23 Christ says, "And now Father, I pray
unto thee for them, and also for all those who shall believe on their words,
that they may believe in me, that I may be in them as thou, Father, art in
me, that we may be one." After He thus prayed, his disciples were filled
with the Holy Ghost, which will help them become one with the Father and
with Christ.
LetÆs look at more of our baptismal covenants as explained by Alma the Elder
when he was preaching in the forest on Mormon near the waters of Mormon in
Mosiah 18:8.
Mosiah 18:8-14, 21-24, 27-29
8 And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters
of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come
into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear
one another's burdens, that they may be light; (Visiting Teaching, Home
teaching, fellowshipping regardless of specific stewardships)
9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort
those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all
times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until
death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the
first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life--
10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you
against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that
ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep
his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?
21 And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with
another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith
and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one
towards another.
23 And he commanded them that they should observe the sabbath day, and keep
it holy, and also every day they should give thanks to the Lord their God.
27 And again Alma commanded that the people of the church should impart of
their substance, every one according to that which he had; if he have more
abundantly he should impart more abundantly; and of him that had but little,
but little should be required; and to him that had not should be given.
28 And thus they should impart of their substance of their own free will and
good desires towards God, and to those priests that stood in need, yea, and
to every needy, naked soul.
29 And this he said unto them, having been commanded of God; and they did
walk uprightly before God, imparting to one another both temporally and
spiritually according to their needs and their wants.
Ephesians 4:11-16
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and
some, pastors and teachers;
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ:
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son
of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness
of Christ: (Become perfected like Christ)
That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried
about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning
craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is
the head, [even] Christ:
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which
every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of
every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
(Or, we will be unified)
Jeremiah 32:38-40
38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:
39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for
ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them:
40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn
away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts,
that they shall not depart from me.
Acts 4:31-34
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled
together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the
word of God with boldness.
32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one
soul: neither said any [of them] that ought of the things which he possessed
was his own; but they had all things common.
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the
Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were
possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the
things that were sold,
2 Nephi 1:21-22
21 And now that my soul might have joy in you, and that my heart might
leave this world with gladness because of you, that I might not be brought
down with grief and sorrow to the grave, arise from the dust, my sons, and
be men, and be determined in one mind and in one heart, united in all
things, that ye may not come down into captivity;
22 That ye may not be cursed with a sore cursing; and also, that ye may not
incur the displeasure of a just God upon you, unto the destruction, yea, the
eternal destruction of both soul and body.
Moses 7:18
18 And the Lord called his people ZION, because they were of one heart and
one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them.
3 Nephi 28:10
10 And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down
in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father
hath given me fulness of joy; and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as
the Father; and the Father and I are one;
D&C 42:3
3 For verily I say, as ye have assembled yourselves together according to
the commandment wherewith I commanded you, and are agreed as touching this
one thing, and have asked the Father in my name, even so ye shall receive.
John 17:11
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I
come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast
given me, that they may be one, as we [are].
John 17:21-23
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, [art] in me, and I in thee,
that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast
sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be
one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that
the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast
loved me.
3 Nephi 16:3
3 But I have received a commandment of the Father that I shall go unto
them, and that they shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among my
sheep, that there may be one fold and one shepherd; therefore I go to show
myself unto them.
3 Nephi 28:10
10 And for this cause ye shall have fulness of joy; and ye shall sit down
in the kingdom of my Father; yea, your joy shall be full, even as the Father
hath given me fulness of joy; and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as
the Father; and the Father and I are one;
D&C 35:2
2 I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who was crucified for the sins of the
world, even as many as will believe on my name, that they may become the
sons of God, even one in me as I am one in the Father, as the Father is one
in me, that we may be one.
D&C 50:43
43 And the Father and I are one. I am in the Father and the Father in me;
and inasmuch as ye have received me, ye are in me and I in you.
D&C 93:3
3 And that I am in the Father, and the Father in me, and the Father and I
are oneù
D&C 38:27
27 Behold, this I have given unto you as a parable, and it is even as I am.
I say unto you, be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine.
