Subject: Re: (lds-yw) class size
Our MiaMaid class was huge. It had 16 active (and not just in attendance)
girls. It was hard planning class activities that could be effective without
getting out of control considering the size of the group. I am the secretary,
so I would help out whenever I could and almost became the third advisor for
the class. As things go with birthdays, the class is down to 6 or 7 girls and
the leader wants the bigger class back. If it were up to me, I would say
don't divide the class.

I am new to the list and my calling as secretary in YW's. I am so
excited that there is a place to share ideas. I have read so many
wonderful things already. I would love some input for two things.
First, we are having a Stake Leadership Meeting in a few weeks. Our
ward was asked to be in charge. Our Presidency is new so we have never
been to one of these meetings. They asked me to do a Handbook spotlight.
Has anyone seen or done this before? I would like to do something
creative rather than read something from the handbook. Second, I am in
charge of our Standards Night. We would like to do something that goes
along with the 1998 theme. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Heidi T.

Subject: (lds-yw) Grandparents Night
Someone was asking about Grandparent activities. We had a great activity
in March that many of the girls said was the best activity they have had in
YW. We had the girls bring their grandparents, or an elderly person from
the ward, or any older relative. When they arrived we took a picture of
the girls with their grandparents. Then the grandparents filled out a
questionnaire about their lives ie: (where they have lived, how they met
their spouse, etc.). This was for the girls to keep. Then we served them
a light dinner. When everyone was done, we moved into the Primary room
where we had chairs set up in a big circle. We had everyone introduce
themselves. Then we played the candy game. It is a fun game where you
have a pile of candy in the middle of the floor. If you want the
instructions, let me know. I will pass them on. It is a great game to get
acquainted and have a good time. By the time we were done with the game,
the pictures we had taken were developed and delivered back to the church.
We then read the girls' favorite memory from the card we had them made at
our class activity the week prior to the activity. When the grandparents
decided that it was their granddaughter's card we were reading, we then
gave them the card and the picture to put in it. We had doubles made so
that the girls also got a copy of the picture. We then sent them home with
their cards and with new memories with their grandparents/granddaughters.
Everyone commented on how much they enjoyed the activity. I haven't
explained it very well, but it really was one of the highlights of my YW
experience so far. It was worth the work and effort. Email me if you want
any further details.

Subject: (lds-yw) Youth Conference Dinner Help!
I have been asked to be incharge of a nice dinner at Youth conference in our
stake. Help!! I have never planned a meal for around 200. Any ideas? The
planned activities for the evening are as follows: a reception with Sister
Okazaki, dinner (probably to be served by about 10 couples), a fireside with
Sister Okazaki, and then a formal dance--the youth want to learn how to
ballroom dance. I don't know for sure what my budget is but the stake YW
president said probably about 500-600 dollars. At this point she wants me to
come up with a menu and about how much it might cost. Any ideas you can pass
my way would be greatly appreciated. My email address is DJRawson@aol.com

Subject: Re: (lds-yw) YW - Etiquette Dinner
I'm not certain of how you are doing your etiquette dinner - Is it just YW or
also the YM??
ANyway, we had one a couple of months ago and a guest speaker came, "Miss
Manners," and taught us all sorts of little known facts of formal dining,
information gleaned from a couple books checked out of the Library. Our YW
first counselor wore fake glasses, and between courses stood at the front of
the room and told us some interesting things. Our goal was to make sure the
youth would learn SOMETHING to help them not feel like a fish out of water
should they be invited to a very formal dinner. We served several courses,
tho not the 14 MIss Manners describes in her books, and taught them about what
all the silverware is for, as well as the several plates. SInce almost all of
them had recently seen Titanic, they all were prepared and knew that if all
else fails, start with the outside fork and work in.
We also took turns serving the courses, with the deacons serving one, the
beehives another, etc. In another, Stake, event, the youth were also taught
manners, and what is the 'ritual' around introductions, who should shake hands
first, etc.
Hope this sparks some ideas. rr

Subject: (lds-yw) Chain Letter Hoax- Please read!!!!!
Dear Sisters (and Brothers),
Yesterday we all received a copy of a letter fowarded to the list.
Having just read an article about such letters, I was suspicious so I
e-mailed the doctor at the bottom of the message. I told him that would
not forward it if it were a hoax, but if there were such a girl I would
make a personal donation. The following is the message he sent back to
me. It is long, but please take a moment to at least read the first
paragraph. And, I think after doing so you will understand that these
types of e-mail messages are merely pranks. So, please do not forward
any such type of message. There is no way any organization could
monitor the number of people on the forwarded message to make such a
donation, just as your hard drive won't be erased by reading an e-mail
message. (true actually DOWNLOADING an infected PROGRAM could have an
effect, but not reading e-mail). By forwarding we are stepping right
into a prank. I am not sure anyone knows the motivation behind these
messages, but it appears that it just for the amusement of the author.
So please don't waste valuable e-mail space and time forwarding them.
The article which I read talked about how someone has to pay for all of
the telephone traffic, and it is usually US. And these messages only
add to the traffic with no purpose.
By the way thanks for all of the great comments and ideas the last week
or so. I have enjoyed the ideas on the Holy Ghost talks and object
lessons!

To: jcheney@pronet.net
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, this letter is a complete
hoax;
it has nothing to do with me, my Institution or the American Cancer
Society. Several versions of this letter are now circulating, so please
ignore all of them and DO NOT PASS IT ON. I would be very grateful if
you
would forward this note and the information below to the person(s) who
sent
you this letter, hopefully this will stop its circulation.
Thank you for your help.
The statement below from the ACS should provide some clarification.
Fraudulent Chain Letter
This statement may be copied or reprinted by online users
The American Cancer Society is greatly disturbed by reports of a
fraudulent chain letter circulating on the internet which lists the
American Cancer Society as a "corporate sponsor" but which has in
no way been endorsed by the American Cancer Society. There are
several variations of this letter in circulation, including one which
has a picture of "Tickle Me Elmo" and one that is essentially a
paraphrase of the letter below.
The text of the original message reads as follows:
LITTLE JESSICA MYDEK IS SEVEN YEARS OLD AND IS SUFFERING FROM
AN ACUTE AND VERY RARE CASE OF CEREBRAL CARCINOMA. THIS
CONDITION CAUSES SEVERE MALIGNANT BRAIN TUMORS AND IS A
TERMINAL ILLNESS. THE DOCTORS HAVE GIVEN HER SIX MONTHS TO
LIVE.
AS PART OF HER DYING WISH, SHE WANTED TO START A CHAIN LETTER TO INFORM
PEOPLE OF THIS CONDITION AND TO SEND PEOPLE
THE MESSAGE TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND ENJOY EVERY
MOMENT, A CHANCE THAT SHE WILL NEVER HAVE. FURTHERMORE, THE
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY AND SEVERAL CORPORATE SPONSORS
HAVE AGREED TO DONATE THREE CENTS TOWARD CONTINUING CANCER
RESEARCH FOR EVERY NEW PERSON THAT GETS FORWARDED THIS
MESSAGE. PLEASE GIVE JESSICA AND ALL CANCER VICTIMS A
CHANCE.
IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS, SEND THEM TO THE AMERICAN CANCER
SOCIETY AT ACS@AOL.COM
As far as the American Cancer Society can determine, the story of
Jessica Mydek is completely unsubstantiated. No fundraising
efforts are being made by the American Cancer Society
using chain letters of any kind. Furthermore, the email address
ACS@AOL.COM is inactive. Any messages to the American Cancer
Society should be instead sent through the American Cancer Society
website at http://www.cancer.org.
This particular chain letter with its heartbreaking story appears to
have
struck an emotional chord with online users. Although we are very
concerned
that the American Cancer Society's name has been used to manipulate the
online public, we applaud the good intentions of all who participated in
this letter. We are pleased to note that there are so many caring
individuals out there and hope that they will find another way to
support
cancer research. Jessica Mydek's story, whether true or false, is
representative of that of many cancer patients who benefit daily from
the
efforts of legitimate cancer organizations nationwide.
