I just threw this page together, so dont laugh too hard.
http://www.angelfire.com/mo/motormark/horn.html
It's about my aftermarket horn setup.
Mark
Hello Mark,
What brands of horn are these? And where did you
get them? Also, how involved is the install
process, in terms of wiring and mounting? I'm
asking a lot of questions, aren't I? This is a
good thread though- the stock horn on the KLR is
anemic at best, and it's time for me to make an
upgrade. Thanks in advance... Juan Villarreal

Ben, Ben, Ben... He fails to mention four things that come to my mind...
1. The KLR's that dropped were being "RIDDEN".
2. He rode like a candy-ass. I beat him to the Hurrah Pass checpoint by 15
minutes on a KLR and didn't drop my bike.
3. I saw 3 or 4 KLR guys jump to his aid when he fell over while on his
bike at Hurrah Pass.
4. When did he "smoke" a KLR on the pavement... when riding single file with
40 other bikes??? It was an OFF ROAD RALLY!
He also mentions the purchase of aftermarket parts... I didn't realize that
I paid "that" much for a set of Pro-Grips, and a set of Progressive front
fork springs... DOH, stupid me... I could have bought an F650. Oh ya, and
that aftermarket oil drain plug protection part that most people call a
skid/bash plate and pay $40 for...
When I ride, I worry about caving in my engine - not tweaking my drain
plug...
Gino... feel free to paste this to the Beeemer list and keep me posted...

Well slap my ass and call me Judy! I talked to this loser at the rally and
tried to make him feel welcome. He was complaining how shitty the F650 was
offroad and how he was envious of the KLR650.
Kurt/Ron ensure he get's a non-invite back for the 2000 rally.
I mean a BMW rider criticizing some one about spending too much on a bike
and accessories? I am laughing so hard I may need some Depends
undergarments!
I am so mad I am going to go run a high powered magnet over the ECU's of a
few BMW GS bikes!

Hi Judy!
BTW, Gino, if he gives the predictable response, about kicking his ass,
like -"I didn't know it was a race"... be sure to tell him that I wasn't
racing, weigh 265 lbs (Kenny Roberts I'm not), and didn't practice the ride
the day before...

I don't know about fuel injection, but drive shaft is a nice-to-have
feature. The only bad thing it can happen to it is if you drop it on a
rock, and the shaft itself bends. Other then that it's pretty much
maintenance-free, not like chain that needs lubing, and in deep dirt can be
unbelievably messy.

I've ridden with be-mir boyz. If they are looking for a name that
applies, I'd suggest they call themselves the "broken shafts".
Maybe they'd prefer an even shorter version, "shafted".

False alarm! I removed my rear shock absorber (I guess it's OK to call
it a "shock absorber" when the spring is attached) and when examined in
good light there was no sign the oil that dripped slowly from the lower
shock mount these past few days came from the internals of the unit. The
source of the oil remains a mystery. It has a reddish tint but I suspect
that's residual dirt from two recent rides in the Moab area. I'll lay
the shock on a clean piece of paper overnight and put a clean paper
under the bike. If the shock leaks, so be it. If the bike drips, there
has to be an explanation. But so far, I'm stumped.

Do all KLRs have the same spring rates? Maybe they do weaken with use.
Maybe I'm just an extremely conservative rider. My A13 suspension has
never matched the experiences I read about on the list.

Istvan,
You try and find a way to repair a broken shaft in Honduras and I'll be
amazed. A chain is both easy to repair and you can tell when the end is
near. From hanging out on the BMW GS list its clear that the shafts fail
unexpectedly and that field repairs are not happening. Most people can get
10,000miles plus from a chain with minimal maintenance - for DP riders what
more do you want.
I'll take field repairable over a longer (theoretical) lifespan any day.
Cheers,
Vik
