Ron- The Posse is formulating another go for 22-24 October (or a portion
thereof). Details are sketchy at the moment, but wanted to give a heads up
for planning purposes.
This ride started as the scouting ride for a Posse run by just a few of us
but is turning into few more than a few to Kennedy Meadows off of 395. I
need not say you're invited.

Subject: (klr650) klr towing trailer
i've tried it- i built a one wheel trailer as lite as i could (first time
around) about 20 lbs. using 1"x2" steel sq. tubing w/ 8" trailer wheel
and mounted a swivel pin on the rear luggage rack (flat plate with pin
sticking up) then if you carry any weight the total gets to be too much for
the rear frame, wobbling and poor braking occur, handling goes to hell-
that's why i went to my sports rack system- the bike is designed to carry
weight on the seat and rear rack with a downward moment. as long as the
centerline of the weight is fairly close in to the m/c's and you balance the
load somewhat you don't need the trailer- just take the stuff off and go and
play-
your right its completely inefficient to carry your klr (a high milage
vehicle) with a gas guzzler- sort of like trailering horses in your suburban
to go and ride.

I don`t see how that`s possible. I was told that the diaphragm style
petcocks were designed to prevent fuel from leaking from the carb when the
bike was not running, a fuel pollution thing, not to meter fuel. When the
engine is running, even starting, the vacuum opens the valve and full head
pressure is realized at the carb. Unless the KLR`s petcock is designed to
vary fuel source flow dependent on engine vacuum, the pressure should be
the same at all times. Also if what you say is true, how can I redline my
bike on my auxiliary tank which is just a three gallon fuel jug I plastic
welded and sealed a fitting on and is hooked directly to the carb, with the
petcock not even in the system? And while doing this, my air/fuel ratio
monitor registering the same settings as when the tank and petcock are being
used. This is a common service practice and shouldn`t work if the petcock
had any effect on flow control.
If the diaphragm has any effect on flow once open, how can the CVK40 be
used on other bikes that use a standard petcock? The KL600`s and A1`s for
example.
The KLR service manuals don`t even mention the petcock diaphragm in any
of the troubleshooting for flooding or mixture problems. Only lack of fuel
flow.
Maybe I`m missing something here, but the only way the incident you describe
can happen is if the diaphragm controls fuel pressure ( other than simple on
and off) and should therefore be adjustable or correctable if not metering
correctly, just as any component that controls or varies fuel is. If there
is no method to calibrate or adjust the diaphragm valve, then that means
that flow is inconsistent and performance would not be able to be regulated
and that would be a piss poor system and I`ll trash the whole system and use
one that I have better control and tolerances over.
I`m not saying you`re not correct, I`m saying it doesn`t make sense to
have such a complicated petcock diaphragm system when all you need is a
valve to allow fuel to flow when the engine is running, and not when it`s
off, and the carb takes care of the rest.

Skip, I read your later post in response to Juan and that makes perfect
sense. One thing we don't know here though, is how long the bike ran in the
off position - if that is the basis for the faulty diaphram theory.
When we've traded gas with the KLR (one runs out, so we disconnect the gas
line and fill pop bottles until the carb on the supply bike runs dry) we get
three 500ml bottles filled before the carb runs dry. What I'm saying is
that if his "running in the off position" was only momentary, he wouldn't
have had a chance to run the carb (bowel) dry. It will run for a couple
minutes at idle in the off position. So unless he's ran it for 5 minutes or
so in the off position, we haven't proven a faulty diaphram. I think I'm
making sense...

Actually, I disagree. If you're going to set up a base camp and drop stuff
off anyways, it's just as easy to pop your luggage off the bike as it is to
detatch a trailer. And with Tim's SU rack, or my (ahem) MAC-D rack, your
bike will handle better as they both serve to stiffen up the rear sub-frame
on the KLR considreably.
Now, with the luggage AND a trailer, just think of all the schwack you could
carry!
Cheers,
Arne

It might as well be, here in Melbourne. I haven't seen another red

If KHI want to build a KLR Mister_T replica special, they need only
ask.

Consider making the endcap somehow removable.
If you don't like the result once it's all welded back together, you
might be discouraged from making further changes.

Ahhh... Good idea. Is this what you did with yours. Do you have any
ideas on how to do it for someone who doesn't much in the way of
fabricating capabilities?
Thanks,

Ooops. My intention was to drill where you drilled, but now that I drilled
where I did, it's just as well. I guess my idea is to open up the can as
much as possible for flow while eliminating the tweet. Getting rid of the
spark arrestor or increasing noise is not much of concern for me either as
I'm rarely off road with my bike. I'm still debating if I should drill
through the spark cone in order to make the exhaust path more straight
through, and to really make sure I nailed the tweet, 'cause I also think
that this is where the tweet is really coming from (if I were the exhaust,
I think I would tweet there if I had to make all those turns :) ). Any
comments on drilling the spark cone (bad idea, good idea)? Of course, the
other option is to just gut the whole thing and make some straight through
competition for the BigGunners out there :) Hmmm...wait a second...
I suppose the "mistake" of sorts on where I drilled will be good in the
long run because I'll be able to compare my results to yours, Skip. And
since my stock exhaust was just rotting away in a corner of my garage, I'm
willing to take risks with it. Thanks for the help.
