Man, I wonder who told that we have no real winters. On cold days the upper
side of the canyon might go to 20 centigrades below, which is very Winter
like to me.
However, most of our riding would be done on intermediate to low altitudes,
so it could be really nice weatherwise.
It look like this might happen just after Christmas.
If the trip that's going to happen is the Copper Canyon, and it looks that
way, and you want to come earlier, you maight want to visit me in southern
Mexico.
I live in a beautifull small town two hours from Mexico City. Let me know,
we could ride to Chihuahua together...

What

it refers to the model designation followed by the year...in this case
the "A" series is the US model followed by the year of manufacture
begining with the first year being 1987 so 1988 would be "2". The
Canadian series is "Eh2"...the Mexican series is "El dos"...etc....(g)

Dear listers,
Has anyone used Lithium grease (from a can) on the KLR chain? That's all
I could find here (besides regular grease). I have been cleaning and
lubing with WD40, since I forgot to bring chain wax from the US, and
chanced upon this can in a local grocery store (!!). I also seem to have
lost the reserve setting on my tank, as the engine stops after main tank
is emptied.
Thanks!

Hmmmm,
Just for those curious folks, my new mikuni slide barely fits into my A3, with the
throttle cable being pushed slightly sideways by the top tube of the frame.
Just to add that I also love the feel of the throttle with the new throttle that
came with the mikuni(White Bros.) ... a bit stiffer and make the bike look cleaner ...

Hi Carlos,
What you need to do is just hold the bolts (should be an Allen bolt) with
your wrench while you break loose the nut on the back side. Use a box end
wrench or socket. Once the nut is loose then the bolts will come out.
I AM OUT OF HERE!!! Be back in a week or so.....
Fred
Fred is a bit confused with his XR, which has backing nuts on the disk
bolts. Obviously for the KLR there are no backing nuts, the bolts screw
directly into the hub. I tried using an Allen wrench with an adjustable
wrench in the Allen wrench for more torque. Didn't work but for one bolt.
Went out and got the Allen adapter for my ratchet, not enough torque, and I
was afraid of stripping out the inside of the Allen bolt. In the end I had
to resort to an impact driver to get those bolts out. Good luck!

Thanks for the info.! But is the pipe really that loud? Never seen the
pipe up close myself(heard they currently ceramic coat all their new

Just need to know one thing ... will drivers hear my gentle bike that
roars with their windows up and music blasting away? If the answer is
yes, I REALLY need that pipe ...

Yo listers,
I've finally got my modified stocker muffler back. However, the job
isn't finished, it still needs to be welded back to the tapered
diffuser (aka the bit the connects to the engine pipe).
I'll be taking some happy snaps of the modified internals and the
removable end cap.
The design of the end cap retention system will make it easy to
fabricate a completely new end cap and outlet pipe to almost any
design I could think of, so there is still room for lots of
experimentation.
Way cool, and I'm sure many of you technical types out there will
share my enthusiasm once you see the finished product, which will
eventually (I hope) result in a detailed article in DSN.
Reminds me of a song: "Things That Make You Go 'Hmmmmm'".
The DJ'd carby is now back in the bike. It wasn't all that much hassle
to put it back in without shifting the rear subframe.
While I was standing back and admiring my work, I had some more ideas
for airbox mods. More "Things That Make You Go 'Hmmmmm'" and I think
more elegant than some of my earlier ideas.
Hmmmmm, I can see the dyno graph already, and it looks good...

Damn Barbarians! Oh-wait! I'm Scottish, never mind.....Never could get too
much into the Norse mythology, too damn depressing, Greek Classic is where
its at for me. I read the book years ago. Was the movie any good? Have you
every seen "Erik the Viking" with Tim Robbins? Sort of a Monty Pythonish
flick, pokes fun at Norse mythology the way M.P's "Holy Grail" pokes fun of
English mythology.

The best part is - is that all my "magnetized" shims just happened to fit

As for me, I'll just have to hope that the indescribable power of the

Just to set the record straight, Montezuma's Revenge, or "travelers
diarrhea" is a bacterial infection, not a viral one. The bacteria in
question is our friend, Escherichia Coli....short, plump bacillus,
gram-negative rod, non-spore forming motile bacilli that is almost
constantly present in the alimentary canal of all mammals. Normally, they
are nonpathogenic in the intestinal tract, however, if out of balance, (more
present than normally), or a really robust (enteropathogenic) strain is
ingested, they do cause enteritis. Presence in water is an indicator of
fecal contamination.
I am intimately acquainted with this little guy, I once spent a year on a
research fellowship through Battelle working on engineering certain strains
of him through transduction. Transduction is when you take a modified
bacteriophage (virus that attacks bacteria) and have it insert a strand of
DNA into the host bacteria's chromosome. Specifically, I gave a strain of
E. coli that was lacking the ability to digest lactose (milk sugar) the
genes necessary to produce the necessary enzymes. Well, back in the late
80's it was exciting. Nowadays, they use engineered E. coli and other
bacteria to produce things like human insulin, and human growth hormone.
(For anyone here who is familiar with this arena, the phage used was lambda
gt11, with a modified Ecori insertion sequence and the beta-d-galactasidase
gene tagged. Yields could be difficult as the lambda phage was of high
virulence, so the gt11's had to be modified to be non-virulent, which wasn't
an easy task. Once this was accomplished, it was a simple matter of
separating the modified bacteria out on a lactose agar plate. Actually, all
I did was reinvent the wheel, but my study focused not on the actual gene
insertion, but the mechanisms, and the possible size of the insertion
sequence when using transduction.)
Sure am glad that biology isn't my bag anymore! (I'd make a crappy doctor
too!) All I want to do now is engineer machines, not plants and animals.
Yep, somebody hand me that pocket protector!
