When I bought my Mikuni 38mm round slide from White Bros., I found it to be
jetted far too lean. WB claimed to have it jetted for a Supertrapp w/12
discs, and a K&N filter with holes drilled in the airbox. But when I
exchanged my stock exhaust for a Supertrapp IDS, I felt a distinct power
loss. So it must have been too lean. The KLR seems to run fine in a wide
range of jetting. But each time I richened up the jetting, my finely
calibrated wheelie-o-meter showed more power on tap. And my finely tuned
odometer showed fewer miles per tank :-(.

Out of curiosity...
What is the most horse power/torque someone has been able to produce out
of a KLR engine. What were the modifications done to this engine /
bike? Some one must have tried racing these things at one time or
another. Most of traffic that I read on this forum revolves around
fairly simple carb/jetting changes, new pipes, or air cleaners.
Has any one really gone nuts on one of these things and turned it into a
killer machine?

Outdoor Research from Seattle do a great ski bandana, made of windstopper
fleece. Has a hole covered with mesh to prevent buildup of condensation from
breath, works great with any high collared jacket. Velcro fastner at the back.
Can't say enough about the great design of everything OR do, this is a good
example.

Ask Geno! He's da man...
Anyone know how I can get my 95 KLR650 to pull wheelies in 5th gear? It's
the baddest KLR around and beats the snot out of anyone elses on this list.
Today alone, I out ran 2 county deputies by weaving in and out of traffic.
Even made a racer boy on a Ducati pull over in awe ;-) [g]

I'll be offline as well until next week. I'm swamped at school, and this
weekend I'm making my yearly trek to the Oregon coast for some killer
windsurfing and straight up sail-less surfing. (I'm dying to try kite
surfing, if I can find the gear.)My relatives have a beach cabin about six
steps from the beach at Tolovana Park, right by Haystack Rock. The wife and
I had our honeymoon there, and this will be our seventh aniversary. Got the
SUV all duded up with the boards on top, top luggage carrier, mountain bikes
on the back, and with my GRILL GUARDS I look like an advertisement. Gee, I
feel like such a poser I might as well keep it loaded up like that all the
time! What a sporting image I cut!

That's great Jake. Did you do the mods one at a time to evaluate their
individual effects on the bike, or did you do them all at once? Are you sure
it was the carb that made the big difference and not the Big Gun?

Oh, problems with fitment, problems with the rear cap coming off, problems
with the packing getting burned out within a few thousand miles. I have
heard of these from a handful of listers. Even if only 1 person out of 100
had a problem with a production good, that is an unacceptable production
quality in my book, but then I'm a perfectionist and don't like to gamble.
If your pipe works for you, great. I don't want to knock the ST IDS, but I
just think that I'll stick with my stock pipe for as long as I can. The IDS
is fairly new, and there are always Quality Assurance issues in the
beginning of a production run.

Maybe, just maybe, the term "Dual Sport" sprung from the races in Europe that
introduces dirt bikes events both on tarmac and dirt. Which I think, is when
"Super Motards" became popular there ... a road version of a dirt bike (also,
by the way, I think looks weird)
Well, I may be wrong ... :)

Yup, I would agree with the throttle response and all. But if I may add
something, we should also talk about application here, CV's are generally better
for touring uses as it doesn't over-stresses the engine ... also, for the
uninitiated with a performance slide carb, the result could also be a stalled
motor ... :)
Also, some people will think twice about modifying the airbox( and should) ...
which is almost unavoidable to get a substantial power gain through the revs.

Well, pardon me for barging in like this.
But don't you think the difference between a finely tuned CV and a mikuni carb
does not really lie in the power output, but wholely in the response time of the
power? I seriously think this is the reason between the two carb, not amount of
power being put out.
