Steve,

I think this garment can't hurt in a crash, but how many times are you going
to repack it after walking away from your KLR while tethered in?  I think
after a few egg-barassing events you'll just leave it in the closets.

This might be good for armed robbers though...wear it under a trenchcoat and
run from the cops...duck around a corner pull the cord and slap on a fake
beard.  The cops will stop and ask you if you've seen a skinny guy running
past you....=)  An Egg-cellent idea no?...=)

Long term consequences for coal?  How about heavy metal accumulation in the
soil from the coal sludge?  Lung cancer reversible?  PLEASE!  And point of
order, the "long term special hazards" or nuclear power, radiation, is
containable, and only has been proven to be hazardous to humans, not the
environment.  As for potential consequences, the world has already seen the
worst that could happen, and that was at Chernobyl, which was an uncontained
reactor, and is now entombed.  The ONLY uncontained reactor in the US, the N
reactor at Hanford, has been decommissioned for several years now, and the
only purpose of the N reactor was to create plutonium, not for power
generation.  The worst commercial accident that this country has seen, TMI,
didn't release any appreciable amount of radiation, less than what you are
getting now as you read this message from your computor screen!  You worry
about what ifs.  I'm telling you that coal burning is killing people now,
not that it might kill people.  What if you are driving your car down the
road and you don't turn the wheel when you come to a curve?  You can what if
issues to death, which is what has happened to nuclear power.

All of the problems with nuclear power have been forever linked to the
manufacture and finishing of fissionable materials for making nuclear bombs.
Due to the political need to create as many bombs as possible in the
shortest time possible, the government agency in charge cut corners and
failed to properly plan for the future, leaving the industry with a huge
mess to clean up.  But that is a familiar story.  Are you aware that Silicon
Valley is one of the most contaminated sites in the world due to the
manufacture of silicon wafers for computor chips?  As for your description
of the government agency that is needed, I'd say that fits the DOE pretty
well.

The real beauty of the Waste Isolation Project, storing vitrified wastes, is
that all of the stored materials are recoverable if the need is determined
in the future.  This is important if the country ever decides to start a
breeder reactor program again, since this will be a great source of fuel.
The problem with using this as a source of low-level heat is that the
process of heat transfer becomes very ineffecient at low temperatures.

Hey, Kevin,
    When I was younger and dumber (no flame to you!), I used to commute
by bike every day of the year that did not see actual frozen stuff coming
from the sky. I relied on Damart undergarments and was quite toasty. I think
I had their warmest version, because I had to remove it at work or roast. It
was a little pricey, but not too bad, and worth it.
    I also just bought a set of "FroggToggs" which are very lightweight
rainproof / windproof / breathable things. I paid $70 for jacket and pants,
and they are worth far more. They are mostly sold to golfers, but I think
bikers who do not own one of the all-purpose suits should look at them. I
wear leather above (shopping for chaps now) and don't want to go for an
Aerostich, etc. I wear them for rain, and will use them for wind as the need
arises

    You said you don't like using your rainpants, but these things are
very breathable and comfortable (and VERY DRY). The material is strange;
feels a little like soft paper. The color is not uniform, probably because
of the nature of the material, but the effect is not unattractive. I got
blue ones (wanted orange, but they were backordered 2 months and I had a
trip to take!) and the color is actually compatible with a '96-'99 KLR!  The
overall effect is not quite feminine, but not exactly macho, either. Well,
as my late, ancient and revered father used to say, "if they don't like it,
f--k 'em"

     Y2K is the last year of production for all current large-scale
manufacturers. The Apocalypse will be arriving shortly. That's why Kawi chose
the color for 2000 to be Army/ camouflage/survivalist green, so's we can get
ready........................
