Just so I know for when I have to do it, how does one bleed the air out
of the cooling system?
Thanks!

My list ISP had a power supply failure this morning...this is a test
message. I don't know if the messages sent from 5:30 until now will be
recovered. We may have to repost...

I fully expected a fair amount of vibration but I have always wondered
how my bike compares against other KLR's. It seems that the most
annoying level of vibration for me occurs at highway speeds at around 60
to 70 mph. I can't figure out a good method of measuring the vibration
level but just for the hell of it I decided to grab the passenger grab
bar with my left hand at speed and noticed that the vibration was rather
severe. In fact I can't imagine anyone wanting to be a passenger on my
bike on the freeway for more than a couple of minutes using the grab
bar. Does everyone else's bike exhibit this similar intense vibration
in this area? My bike is basically stock as far as the engine goes.
Kurt responded:
First Eric please change your default email format to plain text when
sending to the list. Our digest subscribers have to work through pages
of arcane symbols that only make sense to someone who has been up day
and night for 4 days drinking vats of coffee and listening to the
Nixon/Halderman/Erlichman tapes of the early '70's....
As to your vibration question. What you have definitely sounds severe. I
have an A12 as well. I would start by "loving the bike up" with a good
day in your shop. Where are you in your maintenance? Every now and then
when I fall behind in mine and the bike tells me it needs some "huggin
and chalkin" I just have to park it until I can get to it. Such is the
case at this moment as mine needs a steering head adjustment and I'm
just finishing a move to a new house.
So, if you need some general maintenance this would be a good time to
give 'er a bath, wash, wipe, clean, and wax. All the time you're doing
this you're looking looking looking. Tightening every bolt you can find.
If you find one loose take it out first and put loctite on it and then p
ut it back. Pay close attention to the critical areas around the
subframe, the engine mounts, the swingarms. Make sure you've adjusted
the balancer chain. The new CW on that is loosen it 1/2 turn
only...stand up...spin around three times counterclockwise (this is
important (g)) and then retighten gently...(do not, I repeat do not tap
gently on the side case (g)). Check the forks and make sure the triple
clamps are tight up and below. Check the axles. Check the chain slack.
Check your valve clearances. I bet you'll find something in this
process.
Meanwhile, send in for a subscription to Dual Sport News...for the long
awaited first article on Dr. Moreau's experiments with rubber damping
the KLR engine are in the upcoming issue about to be mailed next week.
Forgive me if you knew all the above...

(Someone once told me that there was a Louis Prima song about "hugging
and chalking" I haven't found it yet. The story the lyrics told went
something like this according to this character. There was this guy who
was totally in love with a woman. He had one problem. She was so fat
that he couldn't get his arms around her to hug her properly. So, he
decided to hug her in parts and keep track of his progress by "chalking"
where he had hugged. That way he could move around her and no when he
had arrived at where he had begun. So, one day he was loving her up and
began his "huggin and chalkin" ...she seemed to be enjoying it immensely
and he was too. Only problem was...that halfway around he ran into
another guy "huggin and chalkin" going the other way (g)....)

I used every fluid in my arsenal and can't tell you what worked best but
I would guess it was lighter fluid. You can't use anything abrasive
without risking scuffing the rest of the can. It eventually all came
off..but took a good hour...

Well, my KLR 650 and I have a minor disagreement....It has 12,000 miles on
it, so I figured I'd check the valve adjustment....
the left exhaust had .004" clearance...so I figure I'll go ahead and pull
the camshaft, etc.. to facilitate checking and changing the shim. All went
well UNTIL some IDIOT (I'm not going to mention my name...)managed to loose
a small bushing-thingy from the rear camshaft cap down the left side of the
motor. At that time I remembered seeing something about putting a rag in
this part of the motor to prevent just such an occurence. Oh well...
Any suggestions? I'm in digest mode, so please e-mail me directly at

on lately, I assumed it was ATT, my ISP, who knows. This stuff is a lot

I'm sure this is a subjective thing but my A9 doesn't
manifest any BOTHERSOME vibes at any speed or rpm level. Most important my
middle age body shows no signs of vibration induced fatigue after all day
rides on pavement or dirt. (I still hate gravel but that's something else.)

Because you didn't just express a strong opinion (which you're welcome to
do), you insulted everyone who doesn't happen to have a bike and/or riding
philosophy the same as your own.

Yes... By "your" definition of Adventure Tourer. Woe to those who's
definition doesn't match yours.

Oh I get it... you must have then assumed that everyone with hard luggage on
their bikes has it there for reasons 'other' than carrying stuff.

Now you're contradicting yourself. You are now admitting that the majority
of those out there with hard luggage will not be venturing out on to the
wash-boards in some 3rd World Country... therefore will not be doing all
that damage to their bikes that you've just berated them for.

Oh ya... right. You assumed that everyone uses their bike exactly the same
way you do.

You have??? Humble???

Some people are very satisfied and proud of the way they've set-up their
bikes. Unfortunately they don't meet your approval. So... Helge Peterson
is a mindless lemming? When's your book coming out Juan?

To draw a parallell - I haven't seen too many trucks on a construction site
that have their tools secured in a waterproof, canvas bag... I have seen
quite a few lockable aluminum truck boxes though... What are they
thinking... idiots... mindless lemmings...

These would be the ones you befriended at all those gas stations? I can't
recall passing a gas station on the White Rim trail..., or on the 300 mile
back roads "adventures" we occassionally do... but if I do, I'll befriend
the attendant. I hope he has a banjo.

you should try it.

That's what they did Juan. "Oh man, I found a thousand dollars in my pocket
