Dear Rev. Chuck:
Have made: Progressive fork springs, Rifle windshield system, Pro-Gel grips,
Moose skid plate (waiting for center stand ordered before installing),
Vist-Cruise, Obe One's metal hangers for saddlebags, removed most of decals
except for tank, Corbin seat (the dipped one because I could get it
quick)-had one before and it wasn't too bad, Givi Maxi rear box, dare I use
the word-Honda soft bags that I had in my parts inventory that I watertreated
until they took 2 days to dry.
Will get: Center stand(ordered), tires when the stock rim protectors wear
out, Kawasaki tank bag (don't like my current set up), and whatever else
comes along that I think I can't live without.

Carrying weight in your tankbag and/or tank panniers helps an
amazing amount. Having a big gut might help, seriously, don't know for sure.

Fancy pointed fairings on sport bikes aren't just for looks, they
can also create a bit of downforce on the front for stability at
speed, or at least neutralise any lift tendencies.

Subject: (klr650) Ultimate spring spacers
Hi listers
I have found the closest thing to the stuff that comes stock in the springs,
1" e.m.t
electrical conduit
Its about 1/16" larger in diameter ,which is better than smaller and is
readily available or free if you are somewhere near a construction site or an
electrician
I made one pair 1/4" shorter than stock and one pair 1/2" shorter than stock,
the one at 1/2" shorter was nicer with 3 psi additional air in shock. really
nice upgrade
however, I couldn't decide which end to put up, so I looked at the
progressives that came stock in my dirt bikes and the tight wound stuff was
down, so I did that.
I figured, put the part of the spring that will stack up on itself and move
the most in the oil, they squeaked at first but when the oil got on them,
they stopped.

Your experience and that of others suggests that quality control &
design has improved. To that I say, "Hurrah, about time". I would throw $10
(14? Loonies) into a kitty to find out on a dyno what horsepower/torque gain
is accomplished by this and the air filter + jet mods made by many listers.
I've read too many articles and spoken to too many researchers about the
placebo effect to believe "seat of the pants" evaluations. Just curious,
Bogdan
Bogdan,
I have probably 8000kms on it so far and it has gotten slightly
louder than
when new, but not loud by any standards and nothing has fallen off.
It has
been on of the better and totally effortless mods to my KLR.

Subject: (klr650) Any advice for the new kid on the block?
Hello All,
I am a potential KLR buyer. I've never owned a motorcycle before and I was
interested in purchasing a strictly-street-bike, until I happened upon the
KLR 650 on the Kawasaki website. Wow, it changed my mind almost
instantaneously. I've read nothing but good things about it (well, almost
nothing). I would like to try to stretch my budget and get a 2000 model in
the next month or so. I plan to ride it mostly on street, with just a little
dirt on the weekends. The problem is I can't stand that new green color!!
What to do? What to do?
I like the bike so much that I was considering buying it, then getting an
auto-body shop somewhere to paint it. I think it would be beautiful in black.
So what do you think? Has anything like this ever been attempted before in
the history of man? Would this ruin the bike? Does anyone know how I would go
about getting new decals for the sides if I do paint it? The color of the
1999 model is tolerable, so I may just try to find one of those at a local
dealership (Roanoke, VA). Whatever I get, I would like it to be new. Any
suggestions?
I've read a lot of posts on this wonderful list, about all kinds of
modifications. Is their anything I absolutely should modify on this bike when
I get it, or will I be satisfied as a novice on the stock unit? Other than
cosmetic stuff, I hadn't planned on changing much of anything. I would like
to get some side racks for it, but I will definitely be on a very limited
budget after the acquisition of the bike itself. Anybody know the least
expensive racks available? Also, working with this limited budget, I've been
trying to find the least expensive full-face street helmet available. Are
Vector helmets OK, or does the mere mention of the name bring on
uncontrollable laughing fits for all who read this post?
Thank you in advance for the much needed advice,
Raamses, A.K.A. Ram

Buy it and ride it a bit and see what you think of it. The most common
initial purchases are a replacement seat, some sort of upgrade for the
front brakes (at least a braided steel brake line) and the instalation of
Progressive fork springs. It took me well over a year to get all these
things done on mine, but I suspest you will end up doing at least several
of them yourself.

Raamses,
I painted mine, although it was the best color scheme (A9) since
inception. The key is in the prep work. For a good, durable paint job on
plastic, it has to be properly cleaned and prepped with the right plastic
cleaner and adhesion promoter. Bonding the paint to the plastic is critical.
The prep work is very labor intensive, but is a labor of love. EVERY nook
and cranny has to prepped properly. I would be very careful in selecting who
you get to paint it and make sure they have a lot of experience with
plastic.
I designed my own decals and had a graphics shop reproduce them in a
weatherproof vinyl, the same as the stock decals. I didn`t get it finished
till after Moab.
I think you`ll enjoy the bike just fine stock. The KLR is a great bike as
it is, it`s just that many like to personalize their bikes to their
individual uses and tastes. To be honest, of all the bikes I`ve owned, the
KLR650 is my favorite in it`s stock condition, it`s just that I`ve got this
other personality that can`t leave well enough alone and will even attempt
to modify a brick, to meet his perceptions of the perfect brick for his
needs.
Get the bike, ride it like it is for awhile and get used to it, you may
even come to love the color.
