putting them that far forward usually works.  I use the competition size,
but know lots of folks running the regular size this way too. I'm 5'10" and
have lots of room left.

I used to be 5' 10" before my best friend got excited when Gorman Thomas hit a
homerun for the Brewers in the great years (1982). He is about 6' 6" and with his
tremendous leverage he came down hard on the top of my head exclaiming, "did you SEE
THAT," I just about died choking on my Johnsonville...

In New Mexico, we have the highest number of deaths by lightning than any
other state.  You need to take cover and let the storm pass.

Tandy Leather sell some excellent stuff called Hyde Rejuvenator.  It brings
back the softness and protects.

Subject: (klr650) balancer chain tennsion

I find it hard to understand why Kawasaki does not publish a torque setting
for the balancer chain tennsion adjusting bolt.  This important adjustment is
easily damaged by over tightening and the inside mechanism is damaged if not
properly tightened.   That suggests a specific torque is required.   Does
anybody KNOW if Kaw suggests a torque?  Does anybody use a specific torque
setting and if so, how did you pick that setting?

I have the big tank panniers, and use it with the kawi tank bag. I'm 6ft and
my knees a little while I'm on trails. But they work fine for long road
trips, I take them off when I get where I'm going.
They should be good in winter to block some wind.
Also, I mount them as high and far foreward as I can, so I can still use the
highway bars.

My '86 KLR600 has a cooked starter. Also, the battery is on its way out.

I don't feel like springing for a starter rebuild right now, and I'm not
too psyched about buying a new battery either.

Soooooooo..........

Does my bike NEED a battery to run? I'd like to just take it out and
replace it and the starter later.

I think I would check the oil to see if there is any visible metal content. If so, look at how square your space cuts are, like Fred is suggesting, they could be forcing the springs off to the side and against the inside of the upper fork tube.
A decent repair would be the pvc pipe spacers suggested in the archives...

How did you cut your spacer?  Did you cut it square on the end?  If your cut is angled you may cause your springs to not ride straight.

Not on your list, but either write once or re-writable cd's. There has been more time and $ spent on compact disk standards than all the formats you mentioned. Plus, the next magnetic pulse won't render then useless...

I'd say d) None of the above.  None of them are really "high capacity".
CD-R (and CD-RW) is more popular than all of those combined.

The ZIP drives do have name recognition, and a fairly large installed user
base.  However, they (especially the 250) are outrageously priced.

The LS-120 is cheap enough ($99), and disks are about the same price as ZIP
100s ($10).  The thing I like about them is that they read and write
standard 1.44 floppies faster than a standard floppy drive, and the newer
motherboards will allow them to completely replace a floppy drive.  Plus,
they are the de facto standard floppy drive on the new iMacs.

I have the large panniers, and they worki great. I have mounted them several
different ways. They do take a little leg room, if you have the highway
pegs. Mine have become a permanant fixture on the bike. I don't even
remember what all is in them, but tools and raingear four sure. They are

You could get away without it, but the charge system expects a
battery in the circuit, and if the voltage goes haywire then the
ignition box will die in sympathy.

You'll have a lot of trouble starting the bike without a battery,
and seeing the neutral light will be impossible ;-)
Trying to start the bike without a battery would be great for your
cardio-vascular fitness (in conjunction with a sensible diet, see
your doctor before untaking any strenuous physical exercise etc etc)
but you won't actually start the bike.
This could make a great late-night cheesy infomercial.
Mmmm, visions of a row of smiling women wearing skimpy leotards
and MX boots, attempting to kickstart KLRs without batteries.
(Ok, for LindaT and Sarah we can include a token beefcake).

A couple months ago a dirt biker was killed and another knocked out while
riding in a wash just outside of Phoenix....I'd say it might not be too

Hey,

    The KLR is back together after a deep cleaning of the carburetor,
replacing all the fuel and ventilation hoses and installing an inline fuel
filter.

    I took her out on Sat night for a test ride, and got it up to 80 mph
(the trouble zone) and it still doing the same thing. It dies and comes back
to life around 60mph or so.

    I got my first issue of MCN and read a readers' letter, telling the tale
of a fuel starvation problem he had on his PC 800 I believe, and he
discovered his problem to be a cracked diaphragm inside the vacuum operated
fuel petcock.

    Anybody ever had this happen ? It does sound like the problem I'm
having, and since I already replaced/cleaned all the other parts of my fuel
system, I'm leaning towards this solution now. And if after replacing this
diaphragm it still bogs @ 80 mph it will mean that it was an electrical
problem to begin with and all the work I did wasn't necessary. Darn.
