I think I would check the oil to see if there is any visible metal content. If so, look at how square your space cuts are, like Fred is suggesting, they could be forcing the springs off to the side and against the inside of the upper fork tube.
A decent repair would be the pvc pipe spacers suggested in the archives...

How did you cut your spacer? Did you cut it square on the end? If your cut is angled you may cause your springs to not ride straight.

Not on your list, but either write once or re-writable cd's. There has been more time and $ spent on compact disk standards than all the formats you mentioned. Plus, the next magnetic pulse won't render then useless...
