Subject: (klr650) supertrapp/ fork seals
I found my receipt and maint records for my self destructing supertrapp. I
Installed it 7-2-98, and it came apart 7-3-99. Seems fitting I think. I may
call suppertrapp and complain anyway, but I don't expect much. The factory
is working fine, but doesn't look or sound as good. Now I need to re- rejet.
I was very thankfull there were no tail gaters nearby, or there would have
been a new custom grille or windshield.
One other new problem is the fork seals. They are also about one year old
and are leaking badly. I took them to a shop last time because I didn't have
the "special tools" as in the manual. Is there awaty to do it without them,
or are they cheap enough to offset the labor charged by the dealer. This is
the third time I needed to change fork seals in two years, so I would like
to do it myself.
Thanks , Ryan A3 in KC

Govt. approved braided lines can be done. There is a bunch in Sydney
(Aus) that does them and supplies a letter confirming their legality
when you buy the lines.
OTOH, KDXs used to come into this country with braided lines which
were changed for approved rubber. The buyer was supplied the braided
line for "competition" use.

Hey Ryan,
I sell the "Leakproof" brand of fork seals and you don't need any special
tools for the installation, unless you call a short piece of PVC pipe used
as the driver a special tool. These are pretty easy to put in and have a
life time guaranty. Problem with the guaranty is that you have to send the
old fork seals to the factory for replacement. So you are out of commision
till the new fork seals get back.

Applies to the mainland but not Baja. Vehicle permit not needed there, just
a tourist permit if staying more then 72 hours.

I recently installed a set of these seals from Fred. They are without a
doubt the easiest seals I have ever installed. I have installed other fork
seals as well as misc. oil seals and these are cake in comparison.
I disassembled the forks and had to use the impact driver to spin the lower
allen head off (this is the part that requires special tools to keep the
shaft from spinning with the bolt), but I don't see why the forks would need
to be disassembled to just do the seal with this type. These seals are not
press fit around the outside diameter like most, they have a ridge/flap seal
like the ID. In fact, the whole seal is allowed to move a bit.
I have about 1500 on the seals, not much but no problems.
