Stu, while Don and Mike were working up the prototype, they misplaced
my clamp. I rode a few hundred miles without it. It worked, but I didn't
feel secure without it. So as soon as I got a spare parts bike it was the
first thing that I salvaged off of it. I don't know how long the RTV would
have lasted without the clamp while bouncing along in the dirt. Anyone
with lowering links and/or an oversize tire should check the archives
for Guy Cheney's clearance solution on how to position the clamp so the
pipe doesn't eat the tire. Mine is tightened down. No problems so far.

Funny you should ask that.. I initially installed mine without using that
hoop, mainly because I am a lop, but also because of alignment concerns.
However, the pipe vibrated loose at the joint and started leaking. Not a
nice sound. I reinstalled it using the hoop you refer to and a little
massaging to make it line up nicely, have appx. 3000 miles on it and it is
still solid as a rock. I say crank it down, you shouldn't have any problems.

Redondo, Stuart, Arne and all,
I got the Big Gun installed and have one question. Adjacent to the rear
brake switch mechanism is the hoop mounting for the old exhaust. I ran the
BG through it, just like the old one, and tightened it up, but now I'm
concerned that there is no real opportunity for the header pipe to move
fore and aft as it heats and cools.
Is this a factor, and should the hoop mount be a little loose? BG
directions say nothing about it.

One good thing, from the description of the new color that high-vis

green.

Ron, Arne, Stuart - thanks. I've got it a little loose right now and will
put some Loctite Red on the bolt or funny up a thread or two to keep the
bolt from backing out. I feel better about doing it this way, because I
don't want to see a stress load at the engine case. Thermal stresses at
the header pipe don't seem to have anywhere to go. At least the silencer
pipe can move a bit where it overlaps the header pipe.
The big challenge has been to adapt the silencer to the Jesse pannier mount
bracket. Right now I have the pipe tucked further into the wheel well (the
silencer mount tabs are on the wheel side of the subframe to clear the
Jesse pannier support), but it's a little close to the tire should the
swing arm fully deflect. I think I've figured a way to cut the Jesse frame
and install a structural ring or segment to go around the pipe exhaust -
maybe an exhaust pipe gasket from a Peterbilt. :-)
In spite of all that, with no mods to the jetting, its giving better fuel
economy. Was 44 or so, now 48 or so after a 180 mile ride today around
parts of Lake Okeechobee. No silencer core yet - but will have to put it
on. The deaf retirees in the neighborhood looked up this time.

Michael, you may not get much help on this as the list is pretty much all
oiled out. But, if you go the archives and search on Skip Faulkner and oil
you'll get to the heart of discussions. Basically, many of us use the oldest
Mobil I we can find...after 2,500 miles. But the CW is to avoid any SJ rated
auto oils. So, if you can find SG rated oils you're fine. I'm switching to
Valvoline Premium Blue Diesel...
