I also thought the rear brake almost useless. I may be in the minority list
wise though as I tend to use my rear brake more than most hard core dirt
riders. I replaced my rear line with a stainless one when I upgraded the
front. It is very firm now, even more of an improvement than on the front.
I don't have a brand endorsement for you as I had my lines custom made from
the local "Earl's Performance Plumbing" jobber. They were about 80 or 90
dollars for the pair, the guy made them while I waited. I still have the
original pads, front and rear with greatly enhanced braking ability.

Can anyone out there tell me how much I should torque the bolts on the left
side engine cover? If there is some specification in the service manual or
supplememnt I can't find it...
Thanks,

I have the drain plug washers in stock and I think they are about 50 cents
each. The new magnetic drain plugs that I have for sale are now coming with
a thin o-ring seal and no washer.

Subject: (klr650) Engine mount bracket question
Okay, I'm in the middle of putting my bike back together after taking it
apart about 3 months ago (i.e. I can't remember how everything went on!).
Anyway, the top rear engine mount bracket has 3 holes for the bolts - first
2 go into the frame, the third goes into the engine. The bolt that goes
through the 3rd one that goes into the engine screws into a threaded bracket
that's sort of shaped like a hook. My question is, what is the orientation
of the bracket? Does the lip of the hook sit up against the engine or away
from it?
Thanks to anyone who can both interpret this and answer,

Well, I've gone and done it now. I have to go through practically all my
files and reorganize because the page is getting tooooo big. If any of you
could make some comments or suggestions, I would like to hear them. I have
yet to find a background color/texture that I like. Some of you may have
noticed every now and then I changed the backgrounds. Was the solid gray
good? Marble looked like crap? Just leave it white?
Arne, remember what I said about planning the site out in the beginning? ;)

Mr. Lampson,
Dude! You should send it up here to Phil at Aftershocks.
Or else to Bob Bell in San Diego. Either of them should be able to rebuild
your stock KLR shock into a sweetheart with a different spring, new seals,
polished shaft (if it's old and pitted), and of course, the all important
RE-VALVING.
Yeah, you know it brother, if you go to a new spring you're gonna need the
new (or at least rebuilt) damping. The good news is that the stock KLR shock
is a pretty modern design (shimstack valving, I'm told) and can be rebuilt
for 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a trick aftermarket shock. For this reason, I'm told
it's a waste of money to put a gold valve into a KLR shock rebuild because that's
more commonly used to convert an older damper-rod shock into a shimstack damping
arrangement.
I now have full rebound and compression damping control ( eight clicks of
compression! ) with a remote resevoir. By keeping the stock shock I maintained
Kawi's neat preload adjuster, (although it only has about 1/2 centimeter of
adjustment.) I also saved money by having my stock spring's spring-constant
raised. All that requires was collapsing a coil and adding a spacer to the
stack. Apparently this is not supposed to reduce your travel.
The only things I didn't do were polish and hard anodize the shock body, or
replace the bottoming bumper. Phil was having trouble finding the bottoming
bumper. Anyone (Fred ;<) have a good source for some urethane to fit the stock
KLR shock?
This setup worked GREAT in the Reno200! Can't wait to try it at Moab2000!
Cheers!

Well, If I had a newer bike, and more dough, I'd go with Mike (Dualstar) Walburn's upside down
forks and have a machinist work it up for me. As it is, I think the most cost effective KLR
front end should have progressive springs, race-tech (or other?) cartridge emulators, and a
nice brace. Mine works PRETTY WELL right now with just progressives, 12.5 weight fork oil,
and a superbrace. I'll get around to the cart-emu's next downtime I suppose... Now that the
rear end is so trick! ;-)
Then, heh, maybe send the engine to Quality R&D, get the frame powdercoated... rubber mount
the engine and pull out the balancer hardware, etc etc. Wow, I really need more time and
money :)
Cheers!

Tom, how many thousandths have you shimmed the main, and how far out is your FUEL screw? Do
you know what main jet the Canuck KLR is running? ( Anybody, anybody? Arne? :) ) You'd have
to look at the needles side by side to see if the profile is different...
Some folks have reported good luck with KLX needles and such. I like the dynojet kit for the
adjustable needle.
Cheers!

Thanks for the story and welcome back Stu!
As for the exhaust, avoid Cobra and Supertrapp, stick with the BG!
And think about selling me your stocker. I wanna follow in Dr. Moreau's
footsteps and rebuild/reweld one.

Can you still tighten these down as much as you would normally? Or would
the crush factor on the o-ring render it useless.

The lip faces in. It is actually a gucci-nut. It gets positioned in such
as way as to bind against something solid, allowing you to tighten the bolt.
Because of the tight location you wouldn't be able to get a wrench in there
to hold a nut.

Here I thought you guys were talking about pine trees.
There are four different needle versions: Canadian; West German; United
States; and Swiss.
I'll scan and send the page to Beez and let him make the interpretation.
