No one has had anything bad to say about the F-650. It is smoother, more powerful, better
for two-up..not as dirt-worthy, not as light (very relative) much more plastic and more
expensive to upgrade to your special delights.
There are several on the list who have ridden both. Skip Faulkner has one of each in his
household. Gino has done a nice write-up in the Kawasaki 650 Dual Sport News May/June
1997. He has a lot to say so I would suggest getting the back issue, he concludes, "In my
mind, the KLR simply does more for less."
In the same issue, Lorainne Curtis compares her KLR and F650. She writes, " I am enjoying
both bikes. I like riding the KLR on the dirt, but I haven't had the BMW offroad yet so I
don't know if it handles as well. With the F650, concern for the cost of new plastic might
lessen my enjoyment and with the extra ground clearance and greater travel suspension on
the KLR, it seems like it would be more attuned to the dirt. On the street, for the long
haul, I prefer the F650. It has less vibration, better wind protection, and a more sport
bike type ride.

Not exactly. Remember, you have a very narrow front tire, spindly front
forks, a high front fender and a whole lot of leverage (32 inches of
handlebar)all acting on the front. Also, you are sitting upright, wind is
pounding on your shoulders, which are connected to your arms, which are
connected to your hands, which are holding the handle bar. It amazing we
all don't crash!

Whomever runs the list, can you enter a 'replyto:' option to have the
list send out with a reply-to that is set to
klr650@lists.xmission.com. It would make it simpler to just click
send...I keep forgetting and often send the reply direct to the
sender...most of my many other lists have the list as the replyto.

I'd prefer this didn't happen....its easy enough to hit "reply to" to get
the msg author and to hit "reply to all" to get the author and the list.
I can't see any benefit with the proposed modification and the result would
make it a pain to get the msg author.
Just my opinion ...I will of course follow the directions of the
collective..=)

I was all ready to go out and buy one and as it turns out, there is
not one to be found in Minnesota. One dealer said he had lots of
cruiser bikes left, hmmm ,wonder why.
I read the specs on the 00' and I guess it is staying pretty much the

My dealer say the 00's will be out by mid-late-July, same as last year. I'm
waiting to see the Olive colored KLR in person, but I think I'm going to
like it. I was thinking a big, white star on the tank or side cover and a
set of twin 50's mounted to the mini fairing would complete the look ;-)

Chris, I have to say I like it the way it is. Do you have a full-featured email program?
My program has two buttons, one for reply to author and the other reply to all. It works
great with the list setup.

So for us who are owners manual deprived, what is the
exhaust cleaning procedure? All three bolts at once,
or one at a time? And do you have to rev the snot out
of it or just vroom vroom a bit? I think this weekend
will be a national sound of KLR thunder weekend as we
all try to de-Tweet! I can see it now:
AP - The citizens of the world cowered in fear as a
demon noise echoed throughout the land. In what could
only be described as mob madness, rouge motorcycle
riders everywhere were reving their steeds in an
attempt to do, well who knows what? But mercifully
their collective roar was drowned out by a single
savior on a Harley with open pipes, who claimed to be
doing it in the interest of safety.
Could happen,

Richard, I have ridden a BMW F650, Aprilia Pegaso 650 and Suzuki =
Freewind 650 (european model very similar to the two previous =
mentioned).
The three bikes have things in common, that are different compared to =
my KLR-a12 98. The bikes seems to have the engine very smooth, with a =
very soft delivery of power when you pull the throttle. They are more =
street bikes that off-road bikes. The three ones have lower seats than =
the klr. The BMW and the Aprilia have very similar handling (same =
engine, but Aprilia put a 5th valve on it). They vibrates less than the =
KLR, but seems that if you put on the gravel they will have less grip =
and short suspension.
The more interesting bike of the three mentioned is the Freewind. It =
looks like the former F650, no windshield, but have an electronic tach =
and velocimeter with fuel level gauge. The only problem is that the fuel =
capacity is 18 ltrs. The engine is really nice, it is the smoother of =
the three, and is oil/air cooled with an oil radiator well protected. =
The seat is soft and comfortable, has a good tail rack, good brakes but =
is also a more street oriented bike than the KLR.
When you drive the KLR after testing the other bikes, you feel that the =
Kawi is more an enduro bike, you feel the engine, pull the throttle and =
the revs go high fast.
Regards,
Juan
