When an oil has qualified for the " Energy Conserving" starburst, all it
basically means ( as far as we are concerned) is that a higher level of
friction modifiers has been added to replace the reduced levels of zinc and
phosphorous. Being a synthetic oil, Mobil 1 and most other synthetics CAN`T
qualify for the API starburst because the friction modifiers weren`t added,
due to the fact that they don`t NEED them to meet the API lubricity
standards, whereas the SJ and SK oils do need them.
The story from Mobil engineers ( not 1-800 reps) and Shell engineers is
that the added friction modifiers have been reported to be causing clutch
slippage in some wet clutch bikes.
I have another oil post on the final word from the manufacturers and oil
engineers I was supposed to post before Moab. I`ll get my notes together and
try to do it this week as there have been
some shuffling among the motorcycle manufacturers in the concern over the SJ
and SK oils.

I have an ammeter on my bike, but no accessories to see about the draw
you`re interested in. I prefer the ammeter to the volt-meter as it is a more
accurate for alternator load indications, whereas my volt-meter is better to
monitor the battery state. Aircraft generally use ammeters ( if they only
have one electrical meter) instead of volt-meters for this reason. Most
presently are using both.

but there is one question that I don't think anyone has the answer to: Why
does the front headlight housing/plastic unit look so strange?

Bob,
You can have mine if I can find them. They didn`t work for me either. The
Suzuki GS rubber-inserted mirror mounts worked better on my bike than the
Honda mirrors, although I still wasn`t satisfied. My mirror mod worked great
and was cheap, but I guess a little to scary for most, so I went after the
source, the engine.

Tim Bernard makes some side racks to do just this (see the KLR650 section of
www.dualsport.org), you can fab some of your own or ask Arne Larson
(alarsen@rapidnet.net ) who is dying to weld up some stuff (gotta justify
that new welding rig) to make you something.
Oh ya dual star makes a guard that will keep the luggage off the pipe, but
doesn't do anything about your plastic.

Correct. Not necessarilly while in motion, but stopped at a light on a
warm day the temp guage will rise pretty fast.

Unless you don't mind herniating a disc with a full (heavy) tank, it's
easier to have it near empty.

Dear Editor,
My neighbor is a member of your club and has a question about his water pump
on a klr 650. This is what happened-- the water pump shaft broke and he
needs to know if there is an easy replacement of the shaft with out tearing
the engine all the way down. He recently just fixed this puppy. So after he
buys the balancer which is the way kawasaki sells the part do you know if
the shaft is pre-installed?
Please reply when you have a chance. Thank you for you time.

I had a waving complex at first because my waves were not getting returned

cool. I call it my "Cool Wave". Here's how it goes and you don't need an
easy chair but it helps:
Drop your arm out and down at a 45 degree angle and wave with open palm
facing the wind. Don't over exaggerate the action. Only a slight flick of
the wrist will do. If the other rider doesn't return that wave then he/she
just isn't cool.
I'm getting better than a 98% return on my "Cool Wave". It's awesome when
my "Cool Wave" gets a return on a hard curve and I'm one handed. That one
works every time, but, it's not too safe.
BTW my old wave came up from the handle bar and it sucked! I saw a guy
wave back to me like that last week and he almost lost control of his
bike. He was on a Geezer Glide. I think it was a Honda Davidson.
To summarize, my "Cool Wave" may not appeal to all, but, I think it's cool
and I am all that counts.

Michael,
I worked on this problem systematically for 7 months with two
solutions. The only two ways to properly irradicate vibration is isolation
or frequency cancellation, the latter not being practical.
After many attempts at damping ( not irradication) with no satisfactory
results, I isolated the mirrors by cutting the stalks
at a determined distance from the base, joining the two halves back together
with a thick walled neoprene-rubber hose with a
rubber disc between the two ends and machined a clamp to encase the joint.
The clamp is adjustable and the reason is, that after many trial runs, I
could adjust the clamp tension till I dialed out all blurring at almost all
rpms and loads. Also I found that as it got considerably colder, the
characteristics would change and all I had to do was loosen the clamps a
little. It works fantastic, except that most are afraid to cut their
mirrors.
Keeping this in mind, I went after the source, the engine. After three
months of vibrational analysis of the KLR, I found the frequency specific
material I needed for my engine mounts. One of my aircraft engine mount
manufacturers worked with me on the project to help me select an isolator
design that was practical and affordable. They also designed and supply the
isolators for Harleys. In short, I was able to isolate almost all engine
vibration, at all rpms except idle, which had the lowest frequencies and
worst pulse figures. My shakedown run was the almost 1000 miles to Moab and
a 1000 back. Clean, clear mirrors all the way.
