It will be the off season so I suspect it won't be too hard to get a permit but they have
a website with a downloadable application form. Gino was thinking we dodged a bullet this
year in getting the White Rim ride down to less than 30 riders. The thinking is that
instead of limiting the number of participants in the Utah-Get-Together (one
possibility)...that we would limit the number of people on each ride. From this
perspective, we could offer more than one ride on the White Rim and other popular rides.
BTW, Onion Creek is a great and fun ride and I recommend it to everyone...

Hi "Big Gun" Stu.
Glad to see you made it home (Riverside, CA for Beez's info), you too
Chris. Although you rode with two of the California Posse (Jeff Crocker
and myself) on most of the White Rim, it would have been great if you could
have hooked up with us in St. George. Zion and Capitol Reef were a great
warm-up to Moab. The posse offered great moral support whenever our body
parts started to freeze, since we all experienced similar discomfort and
could easily commiserate with each other. And when someone got stuck axle
deep in mud in a cow pasture in the middle of Zion (me), the posse was
there knee high in the stuff to wrench my 500 hundred pound KLR (100 pounds
of mud) from its near term home. Thanks posse, spending the week staring
at my KLR stuck in the mud isn't nearly as pretty as the Schafer trail.

NEVER, EVER, ask, "what else can go wrong". Unless you want to find out.
Where are you at in CA Stu? Maybe we can hook up. I'm in Oakland and
invite all
KLRasta to come on over for a beer some time. Next year I'm going to
trailer to
St George. Nevada is BORING!

Common enough that making a mod to the fuse circuit is becoming a very popular mod. For
those of us not so equipped, it can mean:
From bothsides:
1) Removing Obi Wan's Aluminum Panniers
2) Loosening/Removing Obi Wan's SU Racks
3) Removing both side covers
4) Removing both hold down nuts for the seat
5) Finding and replacing the 20A Fuse
6) Reverse
In fact, this maybe should be the new initiation rite. Doing this in the dark with the
stock tool kit.
Dave, many of us have blown the headlight fuse once mysteriously and then it never happens
again...go figure. Just before Moab I tore into my electrical system and added fused
circuits for my Garmin GPS III +; an accessory socket; and a heated vest. I relocated all
the fuses (2 new additions) to behind the black plastic piece that used to shroud the coil
and sidestand safety switch. I can now pull it off without a tool and get at the bladed
fuses.

Greetings!
Well my KLR is now ready for the Alaska ride!
This evening I mounted the aluminum panniers. They look waaaaay cool on
the KLR. I think they're rather Tonka-like!
I'm probably going to forgo installing the IDS pipe. I'm afraid that I
won't have enough time to test it before leaving Wednesday. I'mconcerned
that with stock jetting that I might screw up something and I'll lose
power somewhere. So I'll wait until I get back.
Saturday I'm getting interviewed by the Chicago Tribune on a feature on
expedition motorcycle travel. I am told that the article will bepublished
in the Transportation section of the Sunday June 27 issue. I'm jazzed!
This is unbelievable!
Anyway, I'll be unsubbing Tuesday and be posting when I can to thelist.
Basic intinerary is: Omaha (Frank), Denver, Glenwood Springs(Strawberry
Fest), Moab (Trails & Fred!), SLC (Kurt), Reno (the 200), Portland,
Seattle (Seattlites), possibly Vancouver, Kamloops (Ged).
From there: Liard Hot Springs, Skagway, Dawson, possibly Inuvik,
Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay, Denali, Anchorage, Homer, Seward (Kenai Fjords
NP), Valdez, Haines (Glacier Bay NP), Juneau, Pt Hardy, BC (3 days
kayaking w/ killer whales!!), Victoria BC, Cascades NP and then meandering
home.
Anyone hear from Stuart Heaslet???
Cheers,

OK, I admit it, I've been holding on to this one for myself but I just don't have the time
to do the swap of goodies. I kept thinking it would be only two days. Kimberly suggests it
would be closer to 2 weeks. It is pristine, owner is very motivated to sell. Tell him Kurt
sent you (801) 547-8030, ask for Scott. It's in Kayesville, UT...just north of Salt Lake
City. You can store it at my place until you figure out how to get it home.
'99 KLR 2,000 miles, Cobra, Bash Plate, Gripsters, never down. Perfect. $3,700.

Subject: (klr650) Replace Front Brake Line
Hi all. I enjoyed meeting a lot of you at Moab. For a new rider, it was
quite an educational experience. Thanks to all who contributed advice.
This weekend I am planning on making some mods to my KLR650. They are:
Replace the front brake line with a steel braided line (bought one from
Fred)
- Can someone please point me to set of instructions online? (I have
the Speed Bleeders already)
Move the fuse box to a more accessible location
- Again, any suggestions?
Remove the Moose bash plate and make the trim necessary to allow fitting the
Dual Star center stand
- How much has to be removed?
Thanks in advance. This is my first post...hope it works.

Subject: (klr650) Engine modifications
Hi all of the list, I am very impressed about the spectacular experience =
that you have enjoyed (or some of you) in Moab. I am so far to join you =
some time.
I would like to ask if some of you have any experience in modifying the =
engine, it is putting a piston oversized which cause an increment in cc. =
and horsepower.
I always read magazines for dirt bikes in which appears a lot of pistons =
as WISECO to replace the original ones in XR650 and other bikes. It is =
possible to do in the KLR?
I can imagine that some magic can be done, as well BMW increased the =
F650 performance for the Paris Dakar bikes, from 46hp to 75hp. Touratech =
has a kit for BMW F650 that gives 60hp.
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks and regards form Chile

No need for instructions really, its really straightforward.
Since you have a new bike, your brake resevoir screws won't be
rusted, so no worries. Here's what to do: put a suitable tube
or rubber line over the end of the current bleeder bolt down on
the brake and put the end of the tube in a container (I use a
mason jar). Crack the bleeder bolt open and start pumping your
brake to get all the brake fluid out. Once all the fluid is out,
dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. (I put it in
with my used motor oil). Now, replace the stock bleeder bolt
with your speed bleeder. Unbolt the stock brake line at both
ends. Take note of how it was routed. I tried to reuse some of
the stock brake line retainers, but not all of them will be able
to slip over the end of the brake line. Anyway, using the new
crush washers that should have come with the new line bolt the
new line in, but don't tighten the bolts down too hard, book
calls for 18 ft. lbs of torque. Now, clean the resevoir with a
rag well, then remove the screws that hold the top on, being
careful not to strip these. If you buggered them up at all here,
replace them now, because they will be impossible to remove in
the future if you don't. So fill the resevoir with DOT3 brake
fluid, and close it. Now you have to bleed all the air out of
the line. You might have to refill the resevoir a couble of
times during this. Not sure exactly how the speed bleeders work,
but I guess they are a one way check valve. With the stock
bleeder, you squeeze and hold the brake lever, then crack the
bleeder bolt open, then close it before you let go of the brake
lever. Anyway, make sure you get all of the air out, close up
the bleeder bolt, clean up any spilled brake fluid, then go ride
and enjoy!
Jeff
