What, if any, are the concerns in having two different brands of tires on the front vs. rear?
I understand that you don't want to mix a radial with a bias-ply (why?).

I have a stock Dunlop K139 on the front and am replacing the worn rear tire with a Metzeler MCE Karoo. Any known problems with this?

Subject: (klr650) Tucson subscribers: Great Desert Riding in Tucson!

For Tucson riders I found a great spot to ride in the desert on Arizona State Land.
You can get an annual permit for $15 or take your chances.

In Northwest Tucson take Tangerine Rd. West, right turn on Dove Mountain road, left turn on Moore Rd. (at the housing development) and follow Moore road to the end. It ends at an Arizona State Land fence. Go in and explore! Beautiful desert scenery and mountains in the background.

There are miles of trails, dirt, rock, "whoop-de-doos", washes and trails that lead into the Tortolita mountains. If lost follow the power lines South. Take water...

If anyone is interested in sharing more Southern Arizona trails, let me know!

Michael:
I have the stock Dunlop on the front and a Bridgestone TW22 on the rear.
No problems of any kind.

BTW:  You can mix radial rears with bias fronts without ill effect.

Rick,
I compared my speedometer with a Garmin GPS II+ just last week and mine
reads too fast for my actual rate of travel by 5.5 mph.

I've received the latest issues of the newsletter and I'm loving the chance
to read them. The other 2 members of my team are here with me pouring over
the wealth of information. Did you finally receive the brief of our planned
benefit ride? I had some trouble sending it apparently your server deleted
the final the second it received it because it was infected with an annoying

macro virus. I later disinfected it and re-sent it.
In any event I have been talking to Mell Moore at Kawasaki and I am going to

send him a wish list of spare parts. I don't know how much of the list he
will end up providing but, obviously, whatever he can help out with we will
gladly take.
If it was you going on this trip what spare parts would you choose to bring
along? They have to be manufactured by Kawasaki and come stock on the KLR or

some other motorcycle they build.
Thanks for all your help, we would really appreciate any advice you can
give. Take care

 Hurrah Pass made me shudder to think of what I would have been like 50 miles

I am a newcomer to organize dual sport rides / rallies ( you could never have
guessed that, could you ) and after riding Hwy 70 West to I-15 on Saturday, I
have to agree. I am sorry to put up a "me too" post, but the above note hit
the nail on the head. Got rained on leaving Moab,  rode in soaking wet Levi's
and my Dainese Gore-tex jacket, wearing hiking boots, over the pass (don't
know the name) in Fish Lake National Forest. 100 + miles between gas staions,
I couldn't feel my finger or toes, then I was thinking " What else can
possiby go wrong?" .It started to snow and I ran out of gas. Thank God for
reserve, and Denny's in Salina, UT. What  a learning experience !

I have been working with Chris Products (PBI) to get them to make some more
16T sprockets for the 90 to 95 KLR.  They have agreed to make this sprocket
for me and when they get the tooling up and running I should have some in
about two months.  They are going to drop the 17T sprocket from their lineup
and have the 16T in stock.  So all you 90-95 KLRists you will have the 16T
sprocket you have been asking for.

Anybody run a 17T before?  Did it fit??

Great work Fred, the 14T I bought from you had the two small holes for the older bikes and
I wondered (with Eric R) if they shouldn't have just dropped the later 16T sprocket
because it would seem the earlier would fit on both. As for the 17, there isn't a lot of
room to work with and some pretty important wires coming out of the case at the forward
part of the sprocket. Also, I think it would be too much for the KLR to pull with any kind
of a headwind or load...

Perhaps this was actually an aborted initiation ceremony which had
to be called off at short notice because somebody forgot to bring
the rubber chicken and the balancer chain.

I hate to say it, but you really should plan on disassembling the
lower case.  You need to inspect the main bearings and
countershaft bearings to see if they got burnt.  You also need to
inspect the rod bearings more carefully.  Plan on installing a
new wrist pin and new retaining clips.  Also, besides checking
the cylinder diameter, you need to check for any distortion in
the cylinder walls.  Make sure to check the mating surfaces of
the head and cylinder are flat.  Mild distortions in the mating
surfaces can be corrected by using a quality piece of glass, and
lapping/grinding compound.  You put the lapping compound on the
mating surface, and rub it back and forth and round and round on
the flat glass.  If the cylinder is distorted past the point of
honing, it can be replaced, but I don't know how expensive this
it, and I'm sure that its pressed in there.  Sorry!
