Has anyone made a list of items to bring to Moab?
Can you share that with me?
I was just putting together my own list, and was wondering what top 10
items people forget to bring.
Also,
Can I ride the White Rim with a stock Dunlop that has 4K on it?

I spent the better part of the day surfing Fred's web site and all the Moab
rally info (Kept the laser printer busy at work). I must say, that you guys
(Kurt, Fred, Bill, Gino) really run a class act. Fred's web page is among
the best I've seen for content. Keep up the good work.
Enough brown nosing, I'm off to relocate my license plate.

It appears that Dairyland is part of a family of insurers owned by
Sentry Insurance Co. of Wisconsin. Their motorcycle coverage is
underwritten by Dairyland. I found them at
http://www.dairyland-insurance.com but the only number they list there
is (715)346-6000 (it chaps my a$$ when a national level company can't
provide a toll free #).

make sure you get the latest version SU racks the "Something Uniques"
they've been redesigned specifically for eventual use with aluminum panniers
and boast an optional wrap around the rear fender strap.

Subject: (klr650) (klr)Racks for Tengai
I'm hunting for a set of racks for the Tengai. Though I haven't decided
whether or not to go with soft, hard, or homemade-hard luggage, racks at any
rate are a priority.
I talked to Tim about the SU racks for a Tengai and he recalled that they
must be 'modified' to fit--has anyone done this?
Also... any thoughts on a homemade side-protector rack to support hard and
soft luggage? The back stock rack is aluminum? Would cutting away the
"flaring" on the side to fit a rack reduce its structural integrity? (Hum,
let me think... old aluminum tennis racket frames, aluminum 16" bicycle
rims... possibly could be pulled off with reliability and cosmetic appeal...)
Thanks.

Ken send us your list so we can have an idea of what kinds of things you are
thinking of....When I go hunting I have a big list and a little list. The
little list is the one I use just before I close the door on the truck and
turn the key. It goes like this: gun, shells, dog, boots, license, money
American Express card.....and, oh yeah, son. I use the same system with a
bike trip: bike, key, helmet, goggles, protective gear, Powerbars, license,
money, Hink Card, and camelbak (water, water, water in Moab)....and, oh
yeah, son.

Ryan, I would put the pressure on Obi...don't let him off, he'll make them
for you if you just apply the right amount of good natured old-fashioned
guilt and as Jake Jakeman says, "the most compelling four words in the
English language, i.e., 'I need your help'" Remind him the Tengai is a

Actually I have been contemplating this for some time. For those of us
arriving on 4 wheels I suggest everyone bring a case (or more) of their
favorite local brew. With the geographic diversity and the proliferation of
local breweries this might make for an interesting tasting party. I know I
have a tendency to develop a thirst in drier climes. How bout it? For you
Canadian Listers that would be....How bout it eh? Those arriving on 2
wheels could just pack hard liquor I suppose.

Subject: (klr650) Scottoiler Magnum Touring Reservoir Observations
Hey Neighbors,
Got my 1 markie box from Fred (thanks Fred!) today.
Seeing as I am such an anti-chain freak, I need something like a Scottoiler.
and mine came in today. I ordered the extra large size "Magnum" 375 cc
reservoir, which is supposed to contain enough oil for 4000-8000 miles. The
reservoir is a squarish brick shape about 6.5" x 6.5" x 1.5" in size. There
are a few references in the archives on this subject, but it looks as though
anyone has yet to successfully mount the big reservoir to the KLR.
It is supposed to go somewhere on the rear mud flap. Uh huh. Yeah, right.
Not without removing the license plate holder, and cutting off the little
pedestal that mounts the rear reflector, and even then I don't think there's
room under there, and it looks like a pretty vulnerable and conspicuous
place.
Interestingly, it looks as though something the size of the yellow 500 ml
oil bottle that comes with the kit would fit under the right side of the gas
tank panel, just behind the coolant tank. This would mean it would exist in
close proximity to the cylinder head and above the exhaust, but it sure
seems to be an ideal location. How to fashion a reservoir that won't melt,
and is properly vented but doesn't leak?
Or maybe the big reservoir is not necessary, and just use the 55 cc normal
capacity. It sure would be good to go for the duration of the engine oil
intervals before refills.
It's starting to look to me like the large touring size reservoir from
Scottoiler is not applicable to the KLR. Hmmm.

I just don't know about the H/B mounts, Obi is trying to make an entire
system at a price no one can afford to pass up. He gets so excited when he
talks about this stuff we both get exhausted and then I have to wait a few
days to call him back. He says he is going to try and have about $5,000
worth of stock with him in Moab and he just bought a new PowerStroke CrewCab
short bed to haul it. He bought a set of H/B's from AJ and mounted 'em up
and was appalled at the flex in the sub-frame. He then redesigned the SU's
with the wrap-around. He says you can pick the entire bike up with a winch
and hang it from a tree from any part of the rack. I think we should do that
in Moab and take some pictures....I know he is psyched 'cause he is leaving
his DR at home and bringing the KLR. That is a sure sign.
As soon as they hit my doorstep I'll get them up on the Idiot's webpage...

Subject: (klr650) NKLR- International bike coverage
"The following is a public service
announcement..."
Hello folks... I think I may have found a
company that could meet some of your insurance
needs when traveling internationally. Their main
requirements (along with the standard riding
history guidelines) are that you be an American
or Canadian citizen with a bike that's registered
in one of those two countries. Their name is AIU
(American International Underwriters) and you can
purchase either a basic liability policy or get a
more comprehensive policy that includes fire,
theft, vandalism, collision, and accessories
($500 deductible, 20% deductible in the case of a
total theft). They'll issue coverage for up to
26 weeks. They're not cheap, but they seem to be
reputable, and the peace of mind makes it well
worth it (for me at least- $432 for three week's
worth of full coverage in Central America). Fees
are determined by coverage desired, duration of
coverage, and bike displacement. The kicker is
that the policy is good for anywhere in world.
Anywhere. Definitely an option worth
considering. You can request a brochure (ask
about their Foreign Motorcycle Insurance Program)
by calling either 1-800-343-5761 or
1-302-761-3107. They operate out of Wilmington,
Delaware (are there any Blue Hens out there who
can vouch for these guys?). Standard disclaimer
applies. For what it's worth...

Centerstand + can of chain lube = happy KLR, PLUS
you get the bonus of being able to remove the
rear wheel without a lot of hassle. For me, a
Scott oiler falls somewhere between GPSs, helmet
radios, and Birkenstocks. I don't know exactly
where that might be, but it definitely isn't in
my closet of riding goodies.

>>Two questions? 1. Will they accept the H/B quick release mounting system?
The quick release system is made by Touratech and it will work with any set
of panier mounts that uses 15mm, 18mm or 20mm tubing and has a rectangular
opening as the mounts slip onto the lower part of the recangle and then the
QR bits flip up and tighten for a secure mount. This requires no tubing in
the centre of the rectangle to get hung up on. I can scan a pic if folks
are interested.
>He bought a set of H/B's from AJ and mounted 'em up
>and was appalled at the flex in the sub-frame.
Do you mean the Hepco & Becker mounts flexed or the KLR sub-frame? The H&B
mounts are made from 15mm steel tubing throughout and is bolted together.
The mounts attach to the KLR in three places and then bolt to each other.
These mounts have been around the world several on a ton of bikes and I
haven't noticed any flexing problems with my H&B setup, nor has Gino with
his - (even during his 100lbs of water test - now that's being ready for
Moab!..=)
What I'd really like is to see Tim develop his SU mounts so they will accept
Touratech quick release hardware and whatever mounting hardware he plans to
use. That way everybody could mix and match.
Cheers,
Vik
