Subject: (klr650) wheelers and dealers
Just want to put the word out..... If you are ever in Eugene, Oregon....
Please do not buy anything from "Cycle Sports" on River Road...
This is a multi-brand dealer and new parts store that has consistently
demonstrated a total lack of dependability, organization and general good
faith in fufilling part orders of any kind! I've been lied to on a Kawi
parts order for almost a month with no fessing up to a job badly done
whatsoever. Not only has the staff at the parts counter been deceitfull but
their prices are consistently far above any comparable dealer or parts
supply store. Please pass the word along to anyone you know in the area!
On the other hand.... Discount Motorcycle Parts on West 7th Ave. in Eugene
is excellent!!! This is a family run shop with a small (but essential) in
store stock, but these folks are very trustworthy and knowledgeble, have had
several great suggestions and follow up consistently with orders.

Jeff- I'm thinking that the A-11 was the developmental prototype (temporary
designation) for the SR-71 which of course *is* the venerable Blackbird.
Apparently the A-11 had no handle. Darrel A12 'avenger II' (digest)

Morgan, my curiosity got the better of me yesterday, so I drove by his house
to take a peek. The garage door was wide open. There were bikes and parts
scattered everywhere. Some on stands, some stripped to the frame. In the
middle of it all was a pile of smoldering ashes that he stood over, swinging
what looked like wrenches in the hand of some crazed conductor on acid.
Maybe it's some diabolical project Skip put him up to? I couldn't tell you
whether he was cursing an experiment gone awry, or practicing some
obscure form of meditation. He was too involved in whatever he was doing
to notice me. I didn't stop or even slow down to find out. It's very sad...

Kawi says use the top of the sight glass, which is 2.5 liters. OTOH, Kurt
is following Eldon Carl's advice to put *additional* oil in.
After attending a clinic with Hiro and seeing it with my own eyes, I'm
going with the factory on this one. Following a *thorough* draining, ~1.7
liters brings the level to the bottom of the sight glass. A total of 2.2
liters brings it to the top of the glass. Then warm the engine so the oil
fills up the filter and other nooks and crannies. Shut it down and wait 3
minutes. (The manual says wait several [?] minutes). By then the oil will
still be below halfway in the glass. Add the remaining 0.3 liters, and it's
now at the top of the glass. Once you've tested it for yourself, you'll see
that you can just add 2.5 liters, (=2 quarts and 20.536 ounces). Use the
same drill between oil changes. Wait "several" minutes after the engine
has been running, then top it off.

Subject: (klr650) Introduction
Just wanted to introduce myself. I was all set to get a BMW F650 and
then someone suggested to look at the KLR. I looked at a few of the big
sights on the net, and was starting to become a convert. Stopping around a
few local (and calling a few not so local) dealers I find that 'sold out' is
the name of the game :( Before I knew it, a dealer located one and I bought
it. I haven't even so much as seen one of these bikes! It should be here
tomorrow (fingers crossed).
My main motivation to choosing the KLR was price. I got it for about
$4000 CDN less than what I could buy the F650 for!!! That's a big chunk of
change to me. I will miss the BMW's hardbags and heated grips though.
A tank bag and tail bag and I'll be set for day cruising, woohee!

Just to clarify, the panniers I have on the Hepco Becker mounts are
Touratech. By Al panniers, do you mean Al Jesse Boxes? These need his and
only his mounting system.
For the record, I have used both Givi and Hepco Becker and Hepco Becker is
by far the better system, but a bit expensive. I heard there is an official
Hepco Becker distributor in the US now, they advertise in the BMW Owners
News.

Why miss them? We have lots of hard luggage mounting options. Touratech and
Al Jesse aluminum boxes, Givi, Hepco becker, Pelican cases, soft/hard combo
bags. Heated grips are not problem either, just call Fred Hink. How about
a centerstand while you're at it, Dual Star or Five Stars has them. Taller
windshield, better seat, big front brake, the list just goes on and on and
on and on....
Just check out our web site at www.dualsport.org, it's all there.

Jeff writes:
>Funny thing is, when I drain my oil completely, and use a new

I think I'm beginning to see a common thread in all these anecdotes about how
much oil it takes to fill up a KLR. No one ever specifies (or seems to care)
what "drain the oil completely" means. Do you just pull the drain plug (and
filter) and wait five minutes? If you do, some of that 2.5 liters of old oil
remains in the oil lines, and, sure, it will take less than 2.5 liters to
bring it up to the proper level in the sight glass. If you let it drain for
five minutes and then crank up the motor for about a minute or so and let it
pump out the last of that old oil, then you can probably put 2.5 liters of
clean oil in the bike, and the level will be where it's supposed to be in the
sight glass.

Subject: Magnolia's Prologue
From: "Raymond Everson (Rainman)" <raevers@ibm.net>
.... so I see you people are gluttons for my pain...
As you recall, the Rainman ran into a little problem...
Prologue du' Magnolia:
... so, I quite understandably cannot find a soul in this
little butthead knockoff boutique, complete with built-in
boutique service bay, willing to talk to me. Everyone
takes a double take on my obviously aggravated
demeanor and puts their head down. Mind you, I'd
telegraphed my intent (like an asshole) by calling and
axe'n for the "GM"; to whom I told my tale of woe, and
he sez, "Gee, sorry Man...I'm just the sales Manager" ...
(don't blame him in retrospect.) ...
... so, EVERYBODY is starting to sound like and old
Cheech & Chong gag "Dave's not here, man"
... so, I go 'round back and sure enough, there sits
Mr. Wrench absolutely ignoring my ass (someone's
given Mr. Man a head's-up I'm a'comin') ... at least he
ignores me right up to the point where I say .... (and
I'm a'lookin' to get the man's attention, ya understand):
"So where were you plannin' on goin' to work after
you finish your apprenticeship, so's I know how to
effectively avoid such a place..." ... . That just about
did it I'd say.
... so, he walks up to me like a man. I state my case.
I tell him I think the screws have stripped out the
primary cover holes and I'll take a new one, in
chrome, sil vous plaire. He also muttered something
about "How do I know YOU didn't do it. This lack of
vision concerned me greatly. I'm thinkin', what the
hell difference does it make, the damned thing didn't
COME to him that'a'way. Pregnant pause (say,
eye-to-eye, for roughly 3-4 seconds.) Mind you, this is
Monday morning, the only "real" motorcycle shop
open in the county, and the showroom has about
20 non-employees on the floor.
... so he says to me, "Go wait up front..." (my last
chance, I figure, to give the man the opportunity
to do the right thing...) I decide to quietly avail
others of my predicament and stroll out to the
showroom. (By the way, someone axe'd how much
they could get a new FLHR Classic pretty much
stripped down and I did see one there, a '99,
going for $20.5K. Speculator-buyers really
suck, ya know! They manage to over-valuate
American Iron to the point that no one can
find MSRP-ness anymore. Nonetheless, that
ruby-colored FLHRfuelie is damned sweet, even
with no chrome.)
.... so he comes back and sez, "everything's in
order..." I said, "Do tell, the holes were stripped
out?" He goes, "Nope..." I sez, "Mind if have a
look? He goes, "Nope, but you'll have to take
it off yerself, I just replaced the gasket and it
was sure enough mangled, that's why you
didn't feel any resistence when you were trying
to tighten it..." To which I retort, "Fine, you
buy the new gasket, and I'll do it right here."
"Not in MY shop" sez he. There's just something
about my lack of a poker face people just seem
to understand right away. "Fine" says our hero,
"... I'll give you another gasket, but you have to
do it in the parking lot..."
... so I'm out there, pulling the cover, removing
the gasket, took a handy Q-Tip I keep in the
tool bag and dipped it in gasoline and cleaned
out the holes --inspect-- apparently, he's right:
no signs of stripped threads. Check the oil
level and put a thin coat of Sta-Rite on the
new gasket, reassemble carefully. He comes
out when I'm done and gives me the "My
reputation...." speech, and I gotta hand it to
him, he did SOUND like he meant it. It's
just that he pissed off my Magnolia, insulted my
intelligence, passed on attention to detail and gave
me major attitude when I called him out on it.
... so, what's the moral of the story, boyz & grills?
If you don't do it yerself, be prepared to get the
bum's rush in one way or another.
... so, you'd think I'd'a learned that by now.
Mags is my 9th murdercycle and my 6th Harley.
It's pretty much been that way since I was a
15 y/o juvenile delinquent out there in the
South SF Bay Area rolling around on my 'ol
beat-up '45, sniveling for parts from the Angels
and the Jokers.

Subject: (klr650) 600 dyno run
Hi folks,
I've the printout today of the base dyno run I had done on the B1.
It's not bad to look at, peaking at about 6800rpm and just on 35hp
as measured on a Dynojet model 150 dyno.
Not a bad result for a bone stock 600 with a wellworn ~80,000km motor.
I also have a printout of the B1 against another run done on a DR650
owned by one of the dyno shop staff.
That DR now runs a freeflowing carbon exhaust can, but for the example
run apparently had a "stain muff".
The DR graphs about 2-3hp more than the KLR, which surprised both the
dyno operator and me. However, the DR midrange is very linear.
Anyway, when I get the graphs scanned I'll find a way to get them to
Eric J to put up on his site for everyone's viewing pleasure.
As a sidenote, I wonder how Dynojet managed such good figures on
their example graph on the sheet that comes with their 600 jet kit
(part number E2144.001).
Their bone stock 600 graphs about 39hp, and with the kit just on
40hp.
Considering that the factory rated the non Swiss/West German 600s
at 42ps DIN, the Dynojet example 600 had remarkably little
transmission loss.
