Why not have a "extra rear wheel" only? Have a front tire that is less
aggressive (modified knobbie) and at the sametime compatable with the
aggressive dirt rear tire with smaller rear sprocket. The point being one
has to own/change the rear wheel to become "instantly" dirt oriented? then
change back to the larger sproket modified knobbie tire. Not the complete
answer but better.

Greetings;
Does anyone have experience with the Aerostich panniers?
I'm concerned about knee clearance. Which size do you use, on the KLR,
and what is you inseam? My inseam is 34".

I have no knee clearance problems when mounting using Gino's method.( Both
straps forward of the gas tank filler). I'm using the regular size( not the
competition size) and my inseam is 33". Aerostitch tank panniers are a
worthwhile accessory.

Solid rubber tires would work but regular pneumatic tires would not
because of the different atmospheric pressures, or lack thereof. I
think that the lunar rover had some kind of stainless steel mesh or
woven together deal for tires that still provided some degree of give.

Well, this being La-La-Land and all, I actually saw the rover and "landing
craft" from the movie at the Car show. It was still behind velvet ropes, so
I couldn't climb in or check under the hood, though. I talked to the nice
lady with the brochures, but she didn't really seem to know anything. I'll
see if I can find out anything thru the rumor mill on what kind of engine it
actually uses. ;) But, yeah, it warmed my little heart to imagine toodling
around Mars on my KLR. Watch out craters.
I'm a bit confused by Neil's response, tho'. Why won't rubber tires work in
space?

I got the big one's , I'm about the same size as you are, maybe bigger. I
don't have a clearance problem. Besides bigger is always better! Too much
is never enough as Mick Jagger would say.

The lunar buggy had metal mesh tires on super light wheels. It used to sit
on the floor of the NASA Museum in Huntsville Ala. I touched it. I think
it may be in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. Most of
the Nasa stuff went there when it opened in '76.

I have four 1/2" holes drilled, this gives just a little more sound and
eliminated the whistling. If there is a performance increase it is very
minor.

On the subject of bikes and the big screen, I saw Romeo Must Die the other
day. While the film isn't going to be in the running for any Globe or
Academy awards, there was a pretty cool bike scene where our hero (not Hiro)
is being chased by two bad guys on bikes. Looked like an 1150GS and a
Tiger. Neat aerial, one handed, machine gunning, 100' jump by the Tiger. I
wonder how many they had to trash to get the scene right. =^)

It is my understanding that your performance increase will be negligable.
The benefits of this mod are mainly for sound. Besides a slightly lower
(throatier as they say) exhaust note, you will eliminate the VW-esque
"chirp" that 99% of all stock KLR650 exhausts fall victim to early on in
their lives.
Cheers,
Arne

Mineral Spirits does not contain alcohol.
If you use any solvent to clean an air filter (and mineral spirits is a good
choice) be sure you pass the mineral spirits from the inner side of the filer
to the outer side of the filter. It is important not to contaminate the
inner side with residue from the outer side.
