Folks,
If anyone is interested, I saw a brand new 98 KTM Adventure sitting
in a showroom floor for sale. You could probably get it for 7K. It has been
lowered and inch or 2 by whitebros. Here is the website for the place that
is selling it.

But so far as I have learned, the springs will swap.
I installed the Progressive 500/560 spring on my stock skock without
problem. The retaining spacers were a little loose but not so much that the
spring can move laterally. After about 1400 miles the only thing I have
noticed about the install is that the plastic inner fender touches the
spring at close to full compression. I only noticed this when the paint was
worn off in a small spot. I checked to make sure that there was clearance on
all metal parts.

Thanks Much Gary,
My Stock Spring also had that little paint rub that you were referring to,
so I don't think that is a really big deal.
Did you do the replacement or did you have a shop do it. I don't have a
press right now, so that is why I had mike do it for me.
I wonder just how hard it is.

Finally! I've reached the 800 K mark and can bring it up to 6000 RPM. It
seems like a new bike.
I have 2 questions if I may:
1 - whistling from the gas tank, pretty much all the time and at all levels
of fill. I notice it of course only when the bikes not running, but it
happens before and after a ride, and I eliminate it by putting the key in
the filler cap, relieving the pressure. Sometimes it only starts when I sit
on the bike. Anyone else run into this?
2 - while I've only ridden through the last few weeks which have not been
very warm, on occasion at a stop light there seems to be a huge amount of
heat coming up from the bike, on the bottom of my left thigh only. Anyone?
is this normal?
Any one know of any dual sport day rides planned in the South Western
Ontario region ?
Guess that's 3 questions, thanks

1. Yes More than 1 of us has noticed the whistleing noise and I dont
think any one has found anything to do about it, Arne said that he never
noticed it and that his tank vent was free and clear when he had it off
the bike, Mabey it has to do with the vent.
2. The heat coming from the left side probably has to do with the
electric fan kicking on, no problem its supposed to do that.
3. No idea, there is never anything going on in North Dakota<8(

Subject: (klr650) 2 questions - ?clutch? and ?carb?
OK gang - I've got 2 unrelated questions.
98KLR650 13000 mi - stock box, stock muffler, K&N filter, Dynojet stage I
First - I've noticed for the last year or so (about 8000 mi) that when I get
off the highway, if I pull in(out? - I never know which word is the right
one) the clutch, the engine idles down to about 200 RPM less than standard
idle. If I keep the clutch in, it will stay like that for about 10 seconds,
then gradually make its way back to normal idle. During those 10 seconds, if
I give it ANY throttle, the engine abruptly quits. I can restart easily with
the starter, or by just letting the clutch back out(in?). If I just
downshift without blipping the throttle, all is normal - no hesitation if I
roll on. Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking for some reason this is a carb
issue - maybe flooding the float bowl? I havent' checked float height yet. I
did tear down the carb to re-jet last year, and I cleaned EVERYTHING well,
and checked float height at that time. I should mention that this problem
started BEFORE re-jetting.
Second - this just started last night. WHen letting out the clutch into 1st,
it clunks/jerks once. If I accelerate hard in 1st or 2nd, I'll get 1 or 2
clunks and jerks. (No jerk jokes please). If I really baby the throttle, it
won't do it under acceleration, but still does when I let it out in 1st. It
doesn't feel like an engine thing, the chain is a little old and sticky, but
I can't see how it would be a chain thing either. I'm thinking it's a clutch
issue?? What would be the smart move - just assume it's the clutch and buy a
rebuild kit with plates/disks/springs? Or should I just open up the clutch
and check it out first?
I should mention also that I'm getting ready to do a pretty thorough
once-over to the whole bike, getting ready for an Alaska run this summer.
I'm already planning on changing tires/chain/sprockets, flushing radiator,
checking valves, lubing swingarm/Unitrak, replacing cables, changing brake
fluid/pads, and just generally trying to tear the whole bike apart and put
it back together CAREFULLY. I'll be anti-seizing the stuck bits, and
loc-titing the loose bits. Any other words of wisdom??

Subject: (klr650) Tim's original side racks
Hey all
I just dumped several markies on new this'n'that for the KLR, including
Tim's awesome SU rack/aluminum sidebox combo. I'll be selling the original
style side racks that I bought from him 2 years ago. They're in original
condition (they are basically built to withstand nuclear Armageddon),
gunmetal grey. I think they're about $150 new, I'll ship to anyone
interested in the lower 48 for the first $100. If you want, you can email me
with a lower offer, and if I don't get $100 in about a week, then the best
offer gets em.
I'm just kind of making this up as I go, so if anyone has any idea that this
isn't a fair way to do it, let me know - any ideas appreciated.

Ladies and gentlemen of the list,
A few minutes ago, while going fast and cranked over, I felt the engine kind
of ... hesitate. It was just for a fraction of a second, probably not more than
two successive misses. I've tried other emergencies before. But I've discovered
that nothing makes the sphincters go tweet-tweet like thinking the engine's gone
away when I'm listing seriously to port on a freeway interchange, counting on
Isaac Newton and radial acceleration to get me around the turn on rubber.
I think I'm getting old.

Hmmm... me too. I'm basing my answer on one lister's experience with his
stock shock and the Progressive Panama Red spring. The doofesu's at the
shop broke one of the spacers. In their infinite wisdom, they installed the
new shock/spring combo sans spacer. We won't get into the fact that they
also installed the spring upside-down, but suffice it to say that the bottom
end of the spring moved enough to start making contact with the swingarm.
Having said that - it wouldn't take too much effort to relief the area
around the shock and create a little extra room. And having said that...
the ID of the Panama and the ID of the 500/560 may be different too - so the
necessity of the spacer for the Panama might be higher than the necessity of
the spacer for the 500/560... The way I look at it... if Progressive
intended it to have a different sized spacer than what came with it stock -
then maybe - for the money you're investing - it should be there.
Hey I know... Ask Mike.
Cheers,
Arne
