  40. And for the most part, I agree with these sentiments. But it seems a mite foolish to pay $50 more for a
  41. tire&mounting&balancing than necessary. So I'm left with a dilemma over which local dealer to support. I
  42. solved it temporarily by having one independent guy for the KLR and one factory-allied guy for the CBR.
  43. but the independent guy has gone and allied with a factory (which, oddly enough seems to have driven his
  44. prices up... but I digress).
  45.  
  46. I think it's fine if people want to always cheap their way thru life... They just won't be riding/dining
  47. with me very often, because I hate having to cover other people's tips... And that's what I consider the
  48. extra $$ I pay at a local shop. Tips.

  266. I concur, BUT the dealership here MOSTLY carries those damn four wheelers and 
  267. "personal watercraft".  Only a few bikes even on the floor!  NO accessories 
  268. at all.  MAYBE some chain lube...probably only because some 4 wheelers are 
  269. still chain drive!  I've asked if they carry any number of COMMON accessories 
  270. for the KLR or ANY apparel.  The rubber stamp reply is always, "Naw..but I 
  271. can GET it."  Well hell...I can get it too!  So much for doing business 
  272. there.  A  place here was recommended by a local lister.  Not a "dealership", 
  273. but a shop that seems suportive of his customers.  (ALSO has a cool 
  274. collection of old bikes and parts and such.  When's the last time you saw a 
  275. CZ mx bike or a pair of those plastic Scott boots???)  Besides Fred, who I 
  276. just got off the phone with, I'll be doing business with this guy even if 
  277. he's a few bucks higher than MAW or similar.  Besides...mounting is included 
  278. with tire purchases!  ( I wasn't really looking forward to wresting a dry, 
  279. old 130/80 X 17...LOL)

  299. and oh my its like new.  Same amount of teeth on the front sprocket (15) =
  300. but went with 45 on the rear.  Its got get up now, a lot!!  DID Chain, =
  301. nice gold one, pricey but heh, Im worth it!! Wheelies are a lot easier as =
  302. well, but thats not proper.  Tires, well, MT70 on the rear (as the MT21 =
  303. for the rear sways over 105kms/hr on highway) and a MT21 on the front.  =
  304. Great combination.  Very sticky in those corners.

  372. isn't prudent.  Having moved recently I'm faced with finding a local
  373. shop/dealer, and so far the interviews have not gone well.

  398. If my choice is an obivously price gouging or borderline reputable dealer =
  399. v. mail order, I'm gonna choose to pay my child support and student loan =
  400. and rent first and then go with the cheaper price. =20
  401. For instance, took some pistons and cylinder into the local shop to be =
  402. measured and checked out, got a bill for $50 and an idiot kid who didn't =
  403. know what the hell was going on, he called in the mechanic who said he ran =
  404. his finger down the inside and could tell they were bad.  How did that =
  405. amount to two 10 minute units of time  and why did he get so pissed off =
  406. when I told him I needed dimensions, etc. so I could return them to the =
  407. seller. Lost some of my business.

  467. ANYTHING I can get at the auto parts store that is similar in quality, but
  468. significantly less expensive, is going to be purchased there.  I have no
  469. philanthropic bent towards mc shops.

  471. On the other hand, five minutes from my house is a mc accessory shop.  They
  472. are prompt and friendly, and give 10% off retail cost on everything, without
  473. my asking.  I can even get them to come down a bit more when I buy a bunch
  474. of stuff.  They have my loyalty because they take care of me, not because
  475. I'm concerned about if they possibly have poor business practices
  476. (pissing/ripping off customers, not paying their bills, etc.).  If they
  477. continue to support me well, why would I want to mail order, etc.?  It's a
  478. business relationship.  I'm in business for myself, if I don't take care of
  479. my customers, I go hungry.  I don't see any good reason why it should be
  480. different for a mc shop.  Maybe the mc shops should offer the "auto part
  481. store" filter (a Fram last time I bought one at the auto part store at 3.95
  482. vs. 9.95 at the mc shop) at a similar cost in addition to the mc shop
  483. filter, and give the customer a choice.

  485. I haven't had too much experience with the local Kawasaki dealer, as I've
  486. only had my KLR for a short time.  I'm certain I'll be giving them a chance
  487. with parts and accessories, but their mc sales guys positively pissed me off
  488. when I was out shopping for the KLR.  I doubt I would buy a bike from them.

  528. In my opinion, you should purchase your oil filter from your local m/c parts
  529. store, even if it is a "couple bucks" more. There are a couple of reasons
  530. for
  531. this: First, you will be purchasing an oil filter designed for your m/c by
  532. the mfg of the m/c, instead of a second thought knock-off of an auto oil
  533. filter. But secondly, and to me most importantly, you'll be purchasing from,
  534. and thereby supporting, your local m/c dealer. Stop and think a minute, if
  535. everyone bailed on the local bike shop just to save a "couple bucks"....how
  536. long do you think that shop will be able to stay in business? You may not
  537. think you need that shop for minor items, but what happens if you need some
  538. factory items, or maybe some high end performance goodies. Well, now that
  539. local shop is gone and you have to travel, sometimes many miles, for what
  540. you
  541. need. Not to mention that the local shop can always be considered for
  542. emergency assistance concerning breakdowns or repairs that are beyond your
  543. capability. You also meet new people at the dealer, see new goodies, learn
  544. about existing or new clubs, find out about rides or outings, etc. Buying
  545. specialty items and trading used equipment over lists like this one is OK.
  546. But for your daily needs, I strongly recommend the local dealer. Sorry if
  547. this sounds like preaching, but I have experienced too many decent shops
  548. close partially because of things like this.
