Most of the bike mags agree on this one.
Baby it for the first 100 miles, then progressively start leaning into
the throttle. It's better to vary speed from large to small throttle
openings than keep steady low-rpm speeds. Medium distance trips (like to
work, in my case, about 25 miles of back roads each way), then an extended
cool-down is ideal.
Most mfrs test their engine full-throttle on a test stand before
intalling them in the frame -- you ain't exactly gettin' a virgin.
Change the oil and make appropriate adjustments at 500 miles, then let
'er rip.
Ploaris had an ineresting break-in recommendation. From their owners
manual - first 90 miles, 0 to 1/3 throttle; 90 to 300 miles, 0 to 1/2
throttle; 300 to 500 miles, 0 to 3/4 throttle, avoid cruising above 3/4
throttle. 500 miles, change engine oil and avoid prolonged full-throttle
operation. I think throttle opening is more critical than rpms, JMHO.
Pete the Streak, 500 miles on KLR and ready to rip

Subject: (klr650) steel vs. aluminum
Hi listers:
I just got me a new rear sprocket. I bought from sidewinder which I was told
is a very good brand (I also bought a Krause racing chain from them). My
question is: the sprocket they sent me is made from aluminum. How does it
compare to the oem? (I presume this one is made of steel) Shoul I put it on
or have it replaced by a steel one?
Thanks
Juan

Juan, The way I understand it aluminum sprockets are only for those
applications where light weight is of the utmost importance, like racing.
Even then it wouldn't make sense on a cow like the klr. It'll wear much
faster. Exchange it for a steel one. Bogdan

I researched this for some time. Yesterday I took a basic GPS course at a
local map store. After the course I purchased a 12 MAP. I think for
motorcycle applications it is the way to go. It has all the same features
of the 3plus except the antennae is inside the case, don't have to worry
about breaking it off. It also has a plug on the back for attaching a
remote mounted roof antennae (boat or car). There is a $50 dollar rebate
available on the 12 MAP until the end of the month. They are sorta hard to
find, I think I found the last one in stock in San Diego.
Morgan.....no longer wondering where the hell I am!

Hi everyone.
Has anybody ever tried using a legitimate sheepskin on top of the seat in
order to keep one's reproductive organs functional after a really long ride?
Just wondering

Get a Russell Day-Long Saddle. You can do 500+ mile days with not sore butt
symptoms. If you do use the sheepskin, put a gel pad on top of the seat
with the sheep skin on top of that.

Not really... You can cut power to that circuit by simply turning the

whoops. yeah, I forgot first aid. one of those all-inclusive kits
(band-aids, gauze pads&tape, aspirin, non-aspirin pain killer, moleskin + an
extra tube of neosporin should cover the little wrenching
incidents/blisters -- assuming you're not trained to use more interesting
bandages, etc. if you are trained, then you know what to bring. my magnesium
fire starter lives in my first aid kit. as for the space blanket, i don't
have one of those, but if i'm traveling with camping gear, i don't _really_
feel like i'll need it.
lighter -- yup. i just quit smoking, so i'm not used to having to
purposefully enumerate that on a list. it used to be one of the things i
always had with me no matter what.
i mentioned the stove...
cooking utensils -- well, my camp spoon is big enough to cook with... but
yeah, you'd probably need some pots, too.
hip flask! i knew you guys'd remind me of the important stuff. actually, the
flask could double for part of the first aid kit if you fill it right. ;)
