The speed limit is posted as you enter Canyonlands NP from the Potash Rd.
and on the Mineral Bottom side. These have been there for as long as I can
remember. Just another reason to "stop and smell the roses."

Yes, but the alternator runs permanent magnets. No slip rings, no
fuss.
Whatever alternator output the bike doesn't need goes back to earth
via the regulator.

The alternator max output spec is at 14V so I guess that is where
the regulator tries to sit at.
I've never bothered to measure the volts on my bike, it all works
too well to tamper with, and I've got a light switch and I don't
run with lights much at all during the day.

John, sounds like a great trip. You should check out Tim Bernard's
"Happy trails" hard luggage. Tim's products are first rate and he is a
great guy to boot, a real straight shooter, he's like family on this list.
He makes fine hard luggage and excellent mounting racks very reasonably
priced,

Stick around and you will find out that we have numerous avenues to

John,
I don't know how worried you are about aesthetics, but you might consider a
run up to Zdeno's Cycle Salvage in Waterloo (on the south side of HWY 7,
east out of K/W) and see what he has. He usually has a few sets of bags
from mid-eighties bikes like silver wings and such.
The guy (Al) runs the place with his wife, and about 5 or 6 mechanics.
He's one of the cheaper places around for tires (next to Parker Bro's in
Etobikoke) his yard is really quite large, and he doesn't mind people
wandering around the yard.
Saturdays are really busy there though.
Eddie - Burlington

Lee,
I have a Garmin eMap, and recommend it highly. Since it's just a small one
piece "brick" body, I just put a couple of strips of 1" velcro under it, and
fabbed a small handlebar platform with matching velcro. presto. It's stuck
on ferociously through anything.
I guess the problem with the GPS III style is the antenna requires support
in the high vibration/shock dual-sport environment. Not so with the eMap.
Unfortunately it's not waterproof as delivered. Sigh. Cycoactive might be
able to help with this aspect of it, as they do ruggedization as well as
distribution.
Now if there was just some way to carry the CDROM around with you so you
could auto-load the super-detailed maps on the road, it would be perfect.
Maybe a guy could stop at town libraries and use their PC or something?

This is probably dumb but....
The stock KLR has a 15 tooth front sproket right? (I can't get to mine right
now to see)
A 16 tooth would make rpms lower and is better for highway?
A 14 tooth would make rpms higher and better for dirt?
Do I have this correct or backwards?
Thanks, I'm riding 2700 Klms from Windsor(Detroit) to Moab and would like
the lower rpms for the highway riding.
Thanks,

This year will be my first trip to Moab and my first long trip on my KLR.
As a new traveler on the KLR I think it would be great to see a Web Page
that had a detailed list of things to bring (for both me and the KLR),
things to plan for and things to know in case of breakdown or emergency on
the way to Moab. If a site like this does exist can someone point me to it,
if not, I would be happy to take everyone's info and suggestions and create
a site with this kind of content.

John,
I used a pair of Happy Trails Aluminum boxes on my Houston-Inuvik trip last
summer, and they really are first rate. Highly recommended.
I'm since leaning away from big hard boxes however, as convenient as they
are, because they compromise the bike so badly in nasty terrain. I just
about tore my foot off on the little buggers many times. I recently bonked
one on a stump and tore it off. I've since repaired it, but it emphasized
the difficulties. Now I mainly use them around town to haul groceries.
For weekend and day trips I'm now using an old pair of plain old smallish
leather saddlebags with NO waterproofing, but I'm not sure they'd work for
an expedition.
Have you seen Scott Lamorte's "Mateel Expedition Case?". That seems like an
interesting option. http://www.geocities.com/slamorte/
I think I'd like to try those Aerostitch/Ortlieb dry bags on my next long
ride. The tank panniers are great.
Cheers,

The Yellowknife? Yeah the Alcan was bumper to bumper RV's, both US and CA.
Plus too wide and flat. Lots of construction/dust. There are some pretty
bumps and puddles off it though...

I'm jealous! I just rode to Inuvik (in the rain), had a "Caribou Burger"
and turned around. (Short on time...).

Sorry, "Digital Volt Meter" also called a DMM for Digital Multi Meter. It
lets you measure voltage and resistance. Essential for troubleshooting any
electrical/charging problems, because you can see where the voltage is in
the system (especially if you have a copy of the wiring diagram, which might
be another good piece for the kit). See

The neutral and clutch switches make 3. There's an excellent how-to off the

Yes, I have heard of some problems with these. One guy (Skip Faulkner)
patched his carb diaphragm with electrical tape to get home. Somebody also
posted something about their petcock diaphragm.

Hmmmm. How about Skip's petcock super-reserve mod. I'm planning on doing
that some day. Way clever. Let's you drain the right tank lobe without
having to stop and tip the bike upside down. Its in the archives.
Also, carry some spare vacuum line. I just replaced mine last weekend when
I took off my Scottoiler. It was pinched, and kinda leaky. The symptom was
starvation/surging at prolonged high speed.
