Some of my ideas can be seen at:

In my case, I used a pair of East German surplus rucksacks for saddlebags
and a pair of small Navy surplus flare cane mounted as permanent latchable
storage.

Probably better to go to the local auto parts and get some graphite or lock
lube. the lock lube is a light carrier with graphite suspended in it. One dose
has lasted for over a year on my bike even riding in the rain.

heh heh heh.... Have to look into this when the time comes. Just got the
rear, less then 100 miles ago, so they're not even scuffed all the way yet.
Front is due, probably in about 2000 miles.

Subject: (klr650) NKLR Electric vest problem
I have been using an Aerostich Unobtanium Electric Vest with great results
for the last year. Its warm and works great. I installed the vest wiring
on my GS500 (direct to battery with a 10A fuse) and on that bike it works,
but is much less warm. I can't figure it out.....the battery is not being
run down when I use the vest and since on both bikes I am wiring straight to
the battery with the supplied wiring I can't figure out why the vest is very
warm on my KLR, but only mildly warm on the GS500. Maybe its a stupid
mistake, but I can't think of what it is - any ideas?
Cheers,
Vik

Several have mentioned going to Alaska this summer (I happen to be going
myself). FYI, there's a motorcycle club up there that has an interesting web
site. It's mostly a BMW club (we'll forgive them for that), but last time I
was there, there were lots of non-BMW bikes around. They don't give a hoot
what you ride.
Check it out. It has good info for the ride up.
http://www.alaska.net/~dbaldwin. Also check out the related rally. Last time
I went (1996), 8 Germans, 3 Swedes, and 1 from El Salvador showed up. Also
several from CA, TX, PA, ND, FL and Canada.

Well, I've been having a good laugh over the fact that your best friend has
not only obtained a machine that, uh, some of us may lust after (privately,
of course), but that she appears to have total run of the computer station
and your email password. What is going to be interesting is how Skip
handles all this over time. Will he get his own F650? Will he get a
private email address? Will he need to to one-up the BMW, do a Haycock and
get a Tiger? There are a whole lotta questions here.
My sheep interpretation stands, btw. Nobody ever follows just one sheep in
the movies, unless it's your turn... You're part of the herd, man. :-)
I'm thinking about sticking cotton balls all over my black Motoport.
Forgive the bandwidth.

Hello Friends:
Has anyone tried to make a mount or carry a set of golf clubs on the
KLR-650. I've been just riding with them on my back, but it is a little
unsafe. My local bike shop has a long gun mount for ATV's, but nothing for
my clubs. If you found something that will work, please send me your design.
I'm looking at several ideals using a vertical rack system hanging off the
left side. It would work like a saddle bag with straps to hold the golf bag.
Thanks, Dan

List:
I'm leaving South Florida on or about May 7 for Alaska via Alabama,
Mississippi, Arkansas, and then sort of diagonally northward to Saskatoon
via the Plains. After that will go direct Dawson Creek, Watson Lake and
indirectly to Fairbanks, then Prudhoe Bay. I should be in Prudhoe sometime
in early June.
Return is during August and early September from Anchorage via Watson Lake,
Cassiar Hwy, Seattle, Eureka CA, Susanville CA, Reno NV, Moab UT and on to
Florida.
This is the longest motorcycle trip I've ever done, and it will be
interesting to see if the old bod hangs in there.
I've already talked with a couple of people, but if anyone else is near any
of those songlines, let me know. If it works, I'd be happy to say hello or
meet for a cup of coffee. Drop me a line via email and I'll reply in kind.

Alex,
Business has been so good that I have started selling books online. I have
an online bookstore now. Click on Helge's book on my web page.
What's next? Selling pencils on the sidewalk? Just kidding!! Business has
been great!

I dare you ..go ahead...
Seems like this is the day for wacky posts and I'm still stuck on the oil thing...delete now if
you can't be bothered.
Just changed my oil and for third consecutive time confirmed Eldon's findings. For the
skeptical, I dare you to do the following. Get your bike warm. Drop the oil. Drop the filter.
Put new filter in. Be sure and tip your bike to the left...mine drains a bit more. Now go ahead
and put 2 qts in no problem. Now the fun begins.
2.5 liters equals 2 qts. 19 ounces (this is Eldon's figure, I actually get 20 but use the 19
ounces). So, to follow the factory recommended refill of 2.5 liters you will want to add the
additional 19 ounces. Don't...just add 9 ounces and hold 10 ounces back. Now look at the sight
glass. It will be full. Skeptical. O.K. good.
Now, start the bike...remember you have held back 10 ounces but the sight glass is full. Start
the bike and let it warm for a moment or two. Now, shut it off, pretend you've just come to a
gas station and you want to check your oil. You decide to go to the bathroom, get a soda, eat
some peanuts...all the while letting your oil settle. Now go look at the sight glass. It will
be about 1/4 inch below the top mark. Don't do anything. Now let the bike sit for an hour or
two. Come back. The oil will be at the top of the sight glass..full...right? But what about the
10 ounces you haven't added to bring the amount you've added to the factory recommended 2.5
liters?
So, for those who don't pay any attention to the 2.5 liters but use the sight glass at least
you are being consistent. You are disregarding the factory recommended refill of 2.5 and adding
2.2 instead.
For those who use the 2.5 and then keep it at the sight glass from then on. You are using 10
ounces of oil between oil changes and then keeping it at the 10 ounce low point until your next
oil change.
My bike reaches the sight glass at 1500 miles so it is using about 5 ounces every 750-1000
miles...so, I need to add that amount to stay at the 2.5...
That's it...now, I'll put it to bed.
Kurt
