Hints on how to handle a bike that's taller than you from a women's mailing
list I'm on:
1) don't do the side to side jostle at a stop light. Do the cheek slide and
have one foot flat on the ground with the other foot on the brake pedal --
y'know, like they taught you in safety class.
2) You can often get a bootmaker to add 1-2 inches to the soles of a pair of
boots for around $50. Many ladies I know have become happy campers with this
simple footwear fix.
3) well, i never really pay any attention to those darn posts, cuz i'm not
really short...

there's a short biker list out there somewhere -- i could get the info for
scoot's partner if she's interested... also, if she wants to hang out with
some lady bikers, there's a "women in sport touring" mailing list. I'm
trying to convince them dirt is good, but they all wanna race on the track
or haul some iron butt...

Frankly, if she's uncomfortable on the bike, she's not gonna be any fun on
rides. Maybe the DR is the way to go...

BTW, is the lovely gentleman who was down San Diego way with a white Corbin
seat here? I'm the impetuous Aerostich clad lady who dashed across the
street, sat on your bike, then dashed back to my riding group for the day...
The Corbin was nice, but I think I'm still in the market for an extra seat
pan so I can get a Russell Day Long... Anyone? Bueller?

Well, on a tall day I'm 5'9" (or, as we shorty-folk prefer to say, "69") which for
this Brobdingnagian bunch o' boys is pretty dern dainty, and even on the Corbin
Orgasmatron with the lowered front section my feet don't go flat on the ground
unless I've had too much cheese on my pizza. And I'm still trading up to the flat
(higher) version of that seat, just to avoid the risk of spontaneous vibratory
orchidectomy.

No big deal: at lights I either bounce gracefully from left tiptoe to right tiptoe

That's at a stop. When you're moving, who cares how far your feet are above the
ground??? As long as they reach the pegs, you can look cool.

KLR is perfect for short-leggers. Especially if they have no dignity to speak of.

Subject: (klr650) April Nevada/Utah roadtrip (NKLR)

    The plant I work at is shutting-down temporarily for an expansion, so I
have some unplanned time-off. You don't have to tell me that twice. I just
wish it could of happened during the Moab Rally. I wanted to take the 108 or
120 through the Sierras in order to take the 6 across Nevada, but these roads
are closed for the winter, so I'll head from Santa Cruz to the South Lake
Tahoe area and take the 50 instead.
    I'll go through Lehman Caves Nat'l Park/Wheeler Peak (highest peak in
Nevada, year-around icefield, climbed-it years ago) , maybe do some
rockhounding/fossil hunting/desert exploring in West Central Utah and then
probably explore the San Rafael Swell area before heading South to Canyon
Country. I'm just going to make-it up as I go, I have 12 days. I'll be
traveling very light and will camp. I want to take the KLR out in the middle
of nowhere on some BLM land.
    I've visited many of these areas/near these areas, before, but usually in
the summer and naturally it was very hot. This trip will leave April 2nd, and
I'd welcome any comments, especially pertaining to typical weather at this
time of year, esp. the Sierra and Nevada portion. I'm hoping that, barring
any major storm patterns developing, this could be an ideal time for travel
in this area, beating the heat and tourist crush. However, I would imagine
that some of my high-altitude aspirations could result in snow encounters.
Then again, maybe I will freeze my ass-off. Who knows.
    Needless to say, this is all very exciting :+ )

sure, i wouldn't mind getting her into a DR650SE, especially with a
long-range tank installed. i lean towards the KLR for her because of
touring together: shared tools, manuals, parts, know-how etc.

plus the KLR is the greatest bike... :)

well, shucks.

i'm sitting here in the darned middle of the lost coast, where i
live. i'd love to go on a mid-april trip, but i'll be in d.c. at the
time, overthrowing the world government.

to answer Bryan's query: the lost coast is awesome for dual-sport. in
fact, it requires them. i can't get home on anything less than a KLR
or a 4x4. there's more dirt road up here than pavement, and a lot of
the pavement is rough enough to want to be dirt.

a lot of the dirt here is privately owned, however. in general folks
are very friendly, but the one rule of thumb is: don't go through a
gate. especially if it is closed.

usal road is a nice little pull. it's fairly tame. you can get to the
south end of it from hiway 1 right where 1 leaves the coast. from
there you hit bear harbor campground, and then there's a longer haul
to "four corners." and that junction, left takes you down some rough
dirt to needle point info center in the sinkyone wilderness; a great
cliff- and ocean-side drive. it's a dead end, so come back out, and
stick left to get to the king range. there's a long dirt haul across
the king range, with some side juts i've never taken. you end up in
honeydew.

another great ride i would like to do again is more inland. from
covelo in the round valley indian reservation you can take a dirt
road north through zenia to bridgeville. it's 80, 100 miles all told,
way empty rough one-lane dirt riding. i barely made it in my 2 x 4
pickup.

most of the rest of my rides have been up to folk's houses. that gets
more interesting, with secret back roads and private drives. some
gorgeous land up there.

another local you might contact for a local guide/ride partner is
fred. he makes the dual-sport cases i'm so in to right now, and has
been riding up here for like two decades. he's cool, even if he is on
a BMW. :)  his fax is 923.7281. i don't have his email and i don't
think i can give out his home phone.

Seems to be more stable on open road due to lower CG.  Certainly no worse.
The big problem (from past experience with big dual sports) is pelican-beak
front fender, which catches blasts of wind from semis, etc.  Lowering and
changing to street-type front fender should take care of all that.  And all
these changes are easily reversible.

The low front fender mod is pretty easy to do.  Fred Hink sells the UFO fenders.  It only took me about 1/2 hour to mount up my Acrebis, I'm assuming the UFO is identical in mounting.
