Yeah, it would break a law or two. Making a copy of a page or two for
personal reference constitutes "fair use" under international and U.S.
copyright law, and is okay. Copying a significant portion or a whole book
unfairly deprives the author/publisher. However, copyright only applies to
license of an expression of an idea or ideas - it doesn't protect the idea
itself. That means you can rewrite, clarify and expand on a subject and
publish your own book, as long as you don't copy word, verse, drawing,
whatever....it goes on and on. Too much info, yes?

Mike,
About the Oylhead. Even if you converted to carbs (this was done for the
Paris-Dakar-Cairo version, not because of fear of electronic failure, but
simply because the fuel injectors foul too frequently on third world
gasoline) you still have an engine with a greatly increased parts count.
Extra valves, overhead cams with chains, etc. And a heavier bike.
I took the liberty of forwarding some of this discussion to Jan Hofman,
founder of the Airheads BMW Club, and newsletter editor of same. Jan
unequivocally states that if anyone asks him about the best round the
world travel bike, he recomends the KLR650, as a bike with 15 years of
production, and spare and used parts available world wide. Used ones are
relatively cheap, so even if you had it stolen, it would not be a huge
loss (monetarily, that is.)
Jan makes some very good points, and the folks on the Adventure Touring
List (which sort of spun off from the KLR650 list) would no doubt agree.
Most have not found it a comfortable all-day-in-the-saddle bike though.
Personally though, I still think the '88 through '90 R100GS is the best
bet. I think it will take more of a beating than the KLR, and experience
of many travelers has shown that parts can pretty much be had, or
improvised, almost anywhere.

Hehe, I've read some vague manuals in the past, but this set wins hands
down. These are the real instructions for lubing the Unitrack;
Step 1 - Disassemble the Unitrac suspension.
That's it! No how to, no in what order, etc. Imagine looking at a
complete bike and then reading 'disassemble the unitrac'. Putting it in
perspective you realize they say this after you've done the rear shock
removal but the layman might be looking for something more explicit. You
don't even want to know what passes for instructions on removing the engine
;)
Having said that, I think the manuals are made for people with some kind
of background in mechanical knowledge. I wouldn't be afraid to get into the
guts of the engine using them, but then I'm not afraid to screw things up in
the comfort of my garage. Kawi even states in the beginning that 'This
manual is designed primarily for use by trained mechanics in a properly
equipped shop, although it contains enough detail and basic instruction to
make it useful to the motorcycle user who desires to carry out his own basic
maintenance and repair work.'
Having said all that, my books have paid for themselves twice over
already just in the rear shock removal and yesterday the unitrac lubrication
compared to if I was to pay for the labour at just about any shop. Get the
books, you won't regret it! They are wayyyy cheaper than paying a mechanic
to work on your bike.

Subject: (klr650) Another valve adjustment question
Hello to the list,
I am attempting to adjust the valves on my 1998 KLR 650, and it is the
first time I have done it myself. I have the manuals and the printout from
the web page. I removed the top engine mount, as instructed, but I still
can't get the cover past the timing chain guard. I've moved the wiring out
of the way as much as possible, but it seems that the space between frame
and engine is not quite sufficient. Is there a trick to getting it out?

Subject: (klr650) KLR paint longevity?
Hey listers,
I put a few more miles on my A14 yesterday. I'm almost through the 500 mile
break-in period, thank goodness. I'm loving the bike more and more with each
mile. I have only one question today:
Since I saw that picture of the MuZ Black Panther, I am getting closer and
closer to painting my KLR black. All I need to know about is the longevity of
the paint on plastic. I've gathered all the info I need on prep-work and
actual paint. I just need to know how well it lasts. So, to all those with
painted KLRs (Gino, Skip, Randolph?, Bogdan, and anyone else), how is the
paint holding up and how long has it been on the bike?
Thank you kindly for the information,

hey pete!
what's your inseam? i'm trying to get my partner onto a KLR, but she
complains about the height. with the bike stock, she can get one toe
down, and the other toe is about three inches above ground. i dropped
the front forks, and that puts her on toes on both sides.
mostly i'm trying to get real-world stories about how KLR is good for
short-leggers.

OK, I've got to jump in here again. For anyone wanting a 650 class bike and
is inseam challenged the perfect bike is the DR650SE. Why? Because it is
designed to be lowered and has an already lower seat height than the KLR.
The DR gets lowered the only safe way and that is by reducing the travel at
the same time. In addition it is 30-40 lbs lighter but feels like 80.

Dana,
Not to be pedantic, but it's the average load that counts, so the brake
light and turn signals pretty much drop out of the equation (otherwise you'd
include the horn, the fan, and the starter, eh?). On the other hand, the
tail running and license plate lights are constantly on, as is the ignition
system.
But, the bottom line is, guys run electric vests and heated grips all the
time, without trouble. Arne's fuse mod is highly recommended.
I also brought out a diagnostic lead from the battery, which I can use to
periodically gauge the state of the battery using the mini-DVM I carry. As
long as your battery is showing in the high 12's, low 13's while putting
around, you should be fine, IMHO.

Oh, and if it be raining hard, KLR sometimes go - sput-sput-sput-ka-putt. If

True, wallets must get wide sometimes - but me no smile. Parts availability
very good for BMW.

Paralever good for 45-60K miles, $500 to repair. 3 sets chain and sprockets
at $175 each to go 15Kmiles each - about same cost to operate. But crying
just the same. Paralever could be, should be, better in terms of reliability.
