What can I say... Thanks. =^)
In reality, it's all of us people that can either make or break the List...
And we're makin' it!
Cheers,
Arne

Subject: (klr650) Possible AK trip
Hi all. I know a lot of this is old territory, but I'm thinking of a late
summer/early fall trip to Alaska. I haven't really thought it out any better
than that, so I wanted to pick the collective brain. I live in central
Washington State, and I'm thinking about taking the ferry as far up as I can
(?Haines?), then tooling around, taking about a month to make my way back
home. Mostly camping, the occasional cheap motel, or night on a friendly
biker's couch.
Now, for those experienced travelers on the list, what's the best time to do
this? Is October too late? I don't know jack about Alaska's roads, where can
I get to in this timeframe without pushing my time too hard? I have pretty
limited offroad experience, too.
On another note, is there anyone in the great NW who would be willing to
spend a day or 2 going over my bike with me to make sure it's ready for the
trip? I would be willing to part with $$ and/or beer for the time. I've got
a 98 with about 15k on the clock. Unfortunately, I live in the boonies, and
the Kawi dealer near me (50 miles) is a d**khead. I'm no wrench, but I've
adjusted my valves and broken down the carb to re-jet. I have never lubed
the Unitrak - wouldn't even know how.
Anyway, if you're getting the idea that this is kind of a half-baked scheme,
I guess you're right. But, I've been working TOO HARD for TOO LONG, and I
need a break. I know a little about touring on the KLR, rode to Moab last
year. But, I know very little about Alaska, so any help would be
appreciated. Oh yeah, if you're interested, I don't have a riding pal
planning this trip yet, either.

Subject: (klr650) OIL
Not to attempt to lead the list down the slippery road again but...
FWIW
I was surfing the other day and got to an Amsoil comparison.
One of the comparisons was the zinc content in 20W-50 motor oils.
The highest zinc content of the ten or so oils compared was Spectro Golden
Four and Castrol GTX "auto" oil. Their zinc content was essentially the same.
I have been using Pennzoil 20W-50 in my bike during the summer and Pennzoil
wasn't in the comparison.
I bought four quarts of Castrol at Wal-Mart for 82 cents a quart.
I've never used Spectro but I think it's two or three bucks a quart at
motorcycle shops.
So, if you're looking for the zinc, it appears that Castrol could be what
you need.
Thanks.

That's some interesting info. About 10 years ago, I came across an Amsoil
brochure that had bar graph comparisons of Amsoil v. about 7 different dino
oils and breakdown into volitile compounds and viscosity retension.
Obviously Amsoil was rated best, but Castrol GTX came in close second.
Pennzoil was third or fourth. QuakerState was by far the worst. I use
Castrol in my bikes, mainly from my experience with my SAABs. My SAAB
factory service manual says to use Castrol oil, grease and brake fluid and
I have had no negative results.

I strayed from the Castrol path for a short while, but have returned, using it in all my bikes, quad and cars.
My thinking is frequent oil and filter changes are more beneficial than high $ oils.

I'm glad that some people have had good dealings with MAW, then again, none
of you had to return anything.
My complaint was about the restocking fee. When I ordered on the phone I
asked if I could return it if I didn't like it - "Sure" they said.
And you can - you just have to pay.
It was a good lesson. Since then I would say that I have bought about 80% of
my stuff from local dealers who always seem willing to deal a bit - e.g. my
Killi I got 10% off which was okay by me.
Thanks, Les

"Penzoil"
Not quite sure why but Honda specifically does not recommend the use of Penzoil in their VTEC engined cars. I took this as a red flag to stay clear of the stuff.
