Just dropping a line to you all about my new tires. In my desire to
be a Guinea Pig I bought some Continental CC160 tires from
OnOffroad.com and they look to be a good street tire. Probably
90/10 as the contact area is fairly large. There will be a follow
up to this when installed.

I spent last Sunday installing a K&N filter and Stage I jet kit.  Also
removed the cover over the air box opening and drilled the right side cover.
Stock pipe for now.  Difference?  Hell yes!  I'm in the middle of a 6 day
ride and LOVE the way the bikes runs and sounds!  Going through three tanks,
my calculations show 40-45 mpg.  Not that much of a change considering ALL of
my riding is KX style WFO!  Thanks to Fred for holding my hand during
installation...

Also added a 16 toother c/s sproket for the trip.  It IS like a 6th gear!
MAJOR difference on the highway at 75-85 mph.  I'd leave it on if it didn't
kill my wheelies!  LOL  When I get home I'm ordering a 14 tooth for specific
off road trips and trying to set a new wheelie record.  LOL

Im gonna disagree.  Its not very good in the dirt?? For jumping, tabletops,=
 gaps, double sets. areana cross?? maybe.  everything else, I dont seem to =
have a problem.  When can a dirt bike be ridden for hundreds of Km's on =
end, up and down non paved mountain grades on wet, deep, spotted wasboard =
gravel, without leaving the rider with a busted ass? or outa gas.  =
(4-stroke yami enduros excluded-but they are limited as well) Perilli =
MT21's (front & Back), lighter muffler, the usual stiffer suspension.  It =
wont do a double set or a 20' table top but it sure can haul ass on =
everything else.  and I mean everything else.  Lift some weights and get =
aggressive with that thing, dont be afraid to drop it, or rip one of those =
side fairings off, they can easily be re-attached with a shoelace and a =
tie, the tank does not puncture to easily  but it does dent nicley, or =
maybe that is just the Albertan in me talking.

     Carl, I don't think I was clear enough in my email.  Just about all I
     use my KLR for is exactly what you say it is best at--'non paved
     mountain grades on wet, deep, spotted washboard gravel'--and quite
     frankly, I very much agree with you.

     On any given weekend I can be found in the Central Interior of British
     Columbia, either trying to find the middle of nowhere, or trying to
     find my way out of the middle of nowhere, at completely irresponsible
     speeds.  Where I will not be found is on some of our slick, tight
     woods trails.  The KLR is geared too high for serious trail use, if
     you have ever been on an enduro machine you know what I mean, but I
     don't want to regear it and lose the top speed I like so much on the
     gravel forestry roads.  Furthermore, the average person would have a
     hard time spending 4 - 5 hours in first and second gear lacing the
     tall 340+ lb KLR through the sorts of places I have tried (mind you it
     wasn't all bad, except maybe for the time I thought I could climb up a
     clay bank from a 2 foot deep creek--I didn't make it).  You are right
     when you suggest more dirt aggressive tires are in order, I'm just too
     cheap to replace the originals until they are worn out.

     Call me a whiner but the 240lb, 50hp WR400F is the cat's meow for the
     sort of riding I call 'dirt riding'.  Otherwise, if it involves gravel
     roads of all descriptions, right down to single track bush roads, that
     don't require low wheel speed and serious rider input, nothing comes
     between me and my KLR.

I special ordered my Motoport pants through a local dealer-- Road Rider in
San Jose, CA. Road Rider phoned in the order while I waited, and gave me a 3
day delivery date which they met on time. They have a 1-800 toll free number
,I believe.

I was in my Local Yamaha shop the other day and saw that they were selling a road legal WR400 with the Baja dual sport kit . Given that this beasty has probably about 20% more Horses and is 20% lighter than the KLR 650 I was curious if anyone on the list had ever ridden one on the road and if so what was it like ?

Looks like a very tempting proposition with a set of 50/50 street/dirt tyres. The only big worry is engine durability, those things are rated in hours not thousands of miles ;- )

I cannot believe how cheap the plastics look on the Yamaha off road bikes.

Dirt Rider rated one on a Dual Sport ride and had problems with the DS kit
staying on the bike, but they liked the bike.

Sorry for the rant.  Your original message wasn't clear that you are
not a Ca. resident as I am.

I find your situation interesting, because I am a product manager
myself. Kawasaki may be trying to minimize the cost of producing,
supplying, supporting multiple versions of the same product by shipping
Ca models to ALL dealers, hoping consumers won't notice/care.

I recently moved to Ca. and brought my 1998 vehicle (car) with me.  It
appears the auto makers are already avoiding product duplication by
making non-Ca vehicles in compliance with Ca. code.  (I passed Ca
emissions with flying colors).

I wonder if there actually IS a 49 state version?!  Maybe you're a
victim of a purposely plotted "mistake" in Kawawsaki's delivery
department formulated by a crafty product manager!  I know my results
would look better if I didn't have to support two versions of the same
thing.

I believe there is. It seems like I asked this question after I had the same
experience of discovering I had a "Californian" A12 here in Utah. Bill
Haycock wrote and told me his bike didn't have the emissions stuff. I was
told by my dealer (I did the same thing of getting on the phone and telling
them I didn't want a California bike...they took it off) that all of the
western states get Californians....

true production motorcycle, I think the casino would call

     I have not looked at the turbine bike you guys are discussing, but it
     might be the one at http://www.maxturbine.com.

     If it is, there was a piece on Speedvision on it.  300 and some odd hp
     and 440 some odd lb-ft torque.  Oh, and also 250+ mph.  It was
     described as a good daily ride on the street too.  I'll bet it is!

I got a California A12 in Florida, even though I specified otherwise.  I

 Yes the KLR would be the one should I ever have to make the decision of only having one bike. This surprises me.
 After a two hour ride prior to work today (2nd shift guy) I was able to let my wrist twist! I break my machines in graduallu and somewhat slow. After 2400 miles it was time to see what it could do. This bike can really corner! At least up tp 85 mph I feel confident. I can corner mich faster than the Concours in the same corner. 270 # difference will do that! I f I keep on the throttle the 60 hp diff is not as noticeable.
 This is a confession of a guy who loves his Concours. I still prefer it (Concours) for any distance and superior weather protection.
 The KLR is a blast!

 The 441 Victor was and is a beautiful motorcycle. Yellow and polished aluminim tank. My Dad's co worker had one. I had a Honda s-90. He took me to the Cascade Hillclimb outside Great Falls Mont in 1967. I almost ran it over a cliff with the shifter and foot brake mounted opposite. Yeow! I did a wild wheelie on it downtown GF by accident, REALLY! A torque monster in it's time.
