Subject: (klr650) NKLR Hope springs eternal (Moab etc.)

     Sunday was the breaking point for me.  I couldn't take it any more,
     spring is too damn slow in coming.

     Simply as a matter of preparatory house cleaning I dug out my M7 to
     give it a good cleaning.  The urge to ride overcame me.  In minus 25
     degree Celsius weather my A12 was slow to start, but after 3-4 minutes
     of cranking it fired without hiccup.  When suitably warm I threw a leg
     over and rode a whole 1000 feet.  It was COLD but I might survive the
     rest of the winter now.

     I got to thinking about riding in early spring and thought I would
     pitch Moab (2001 not 2000) to my better half.  In an effort to build a
     persuasive argument I need more information.  As a straw poll, I would
     like to ask the collective the following question:

        How many attendees at the Moab gathering bring their spouse/partner
        who does not ride their own mount?

last year probably 3 or 4 couples. There were the folks who did the White Rim two-up,

Subject: (klr650) KLR stats

I recently purchased the DMV motorcycle registration records for Texas
(current through December '99).  For what it's worth, there were exactly 572
KLR 650's registered in Texas at that time.  In round numbers, that's about
one KLR for every 35,000 Texans.  If the same ratio holds true throughout the
entire US (and it may not), that would mean there are about 8400 KLR's on the
roads of this country.  And that, in turn, would suggest about 800-900 KLR's
in Canada.

Of the Texas bikes, 52 were 1997 models and 71 were '98's. Surprisingly, the
much-hated green colored '99's numbered 110--almost 20 percent of all the
KLR's in the state.  So far (about half way) in model year 2000, 48 KLR's
have been registered--about the same sales pace as the '99's.

Subject: (klr650) KLX

There have been some rumors about new KLX's still sitting around at some dealers or still in crates in warehouses.  A call to Kawasaki was hopeless as the chick on the other end of the phone had no idea about any sort of inventory listing, OR who to ask.  (Maybe I'll try again later and NOT get someone on their first day at work)  My dealer isn't any help either (go figure).  Does anyone have any knowledge of a new KLX anywhere???  IF I find one, THEN I'll be asking if anyone knows how to bring life to a motor that's been parked for four years!  (spare some bandwith and reply off-list)

I think this is unlikely, dealers can't afford to store old inventory on
which they typically are paying floor plan interest and the manufacturers
don't sit on old inventory.  The last time this sort of thing happened was in
the early 80's when the market went away just as the Japanese had greatly
increased production.  Lots of us benefited and got great buys on "leftover"
models but we haven't seen much of that in recent years.

so let's say i go stir crazy and have to get out and poke around a little in
the mud. aside from gently hosing/wiping the mud off, and scrubbing/reoiling
the chain, maybe cleaning or inspecting the air filter, is there any other
sort of maintenance i should be sure to worry about?

sorry to be such a dope, but with mountain bikes, riding in this kind of
weather almost necessitates a complete teardown.

Funny you should mention that. My partner (who also has a KLR) and I put on
the ROT Biker Rally in Austin--the largest biker rally of any kind in Texas.
We've got Doug Kershaw and Steppenwolf coming to serenade us on Saturday
night. I hope you'll be there. If you like, I'll be happy to send you a
prereg brochure.  We need more KLR's there!

The only downside to it is that it happens to coincide with the dual sport
rally in Moab. Next year we will be moving back to the first weekend in June
so, hopefully, that conflict will not occur again.

If anyone would like info on the ROT Rally, please ping me privately with
your mailing address.

Hello,I own a y2k klr 650 and have a question about upgrading to a mikuni
aftermarket carb.I recently installed a big gun exhaust,k&n filter,and
jetted the carb to a stage II 150 main jet.Very happy with performance but
want more,I talked with fred at arrowhead and he suggested this would make
a noticable difference.Does anyboby have input or personal experiences
installing the mikuni carb?
