Hi All,
I was thinking about changing to Synthetic oil on my
new KLR650 after break
in. A friend of mine had some negative comments
about how it effects clutch
operation. Think its a good idea to switch or not??
Thanks,
John Turner
I use Mobil Uno 15/50 cause...Bike starts easier in the cold (I ride
all year). I feel more confidant riding in extreme heat and engine load.
Every study I've read says synthetic is less subject to breakdown under
those (and any other)conditions. On long trips I don't worry if I put and
extra 1000 or two beyond my normal 3000 change intervals. You can get it
anywhere including many places in Mexico. The young college kid who wrote
that you can buy a center stand or shock with the money you save may do so
but I'll be dead before I recover any significant savings over dino. Bogdan

Has your friend actually tried synthetic and experienced clutch problems?
I use Mobil 1 15W-50 cage oil in: ST1100 (a torque monster), KLR650, KLX300,
Kawasaki 1500 Drifter (also pretty torquey) and a BMW R100GS/PD (which has a
dry clutch so it couldn't care less what kind of oil I feed it).
John, do as many of us do: spend more on oil than you really need to. You'll
feel all warm, gooey and righteous inside because you'll sense you're doing
something special for your bike. Frankly, it probably doesn't give a damn one
way or the other.

I've seen a "new" kind of extractor at the tool store. The brand name is
Drill-Out.
It is a drill bit and extractor in one tool. It has a reverse drill bit on
the end and then
left-handed threaded extractor immediately following. So It theoretically
would drill the pilot hole, insert extractor and remove screw in one
squeeeze of the drill motor trigger.
Darrel, A12
From: "Di or Eddie C" <dyanetti@hotmail.com>
There are two types of screw extractors that I am familiar with. Both
require a hole to be drilled in the broken fastener. One has a square shank
that is tapped into the pre-drilled hole. The other is a shallow conical
spiral. Both have a square shank for gripping.

Subject: (klr650) 500 mile service and warranty??
the local kawa dealers want $150-200 for the 500 mile service. that seems
utterly ridiculous, since as far as i can tell, everything except checking
the valves is easier than easy, and even that doesn't sound all that
incredibly complicated (it also seems like not all dealers bother to check
them). i perused the archives for a while, and it seems like some folks got
away with under $100 for the initial service (which wouldn't be so bad), but
others paid outrageous amounts for poor work, which i'd like to avoid.
does anyone have a good horror story to report about doing their own
service, then having a warranty claim denied? i couldn't find any in the
archives, but maybe i didn't look hard enough. i was thinking of changing
the oil and filters and doing all the relatively simple stuff this weekend,
then checking the valves in a week or so after i get my service manuals. am
i nuts to consider this? it wouldn't bother me if the dealer rate wasn't so
unbelievable. i'd be surprised if it took me (a neophyte to motors) 3 hours
to do the stuff the owner's manual recommends.

This could work in many instances where the bolt was broken by tension or
fatigue.
But in cases where the bolt was broken by seized threads, my prediction is
it would drill the pilot hole, insert extractor and **break the extractor
in the hole**
in one squeeeze of the drill motor trigger.

Subject: (klr650) NKLR- Darien Jacket - Hi-Vis Yellow
To the collective knowledge base in all of KLR ville:
I'm going to buy a Darien Jacket - maybe. I fit in the old f**t group and am
trying hard to justify spending $367-500 on a dang jacket. Heck, ol' Knot
used to race Hodaka Super Rat that didn't cost that much ! If I go with
black, I'm going to look real hard at First Gear Killi - $253 best value. My
interest in Darien Hi-Vis (bright yellow) is for safety and should be much
cooler in summer (vs. black). What'ya think? See below.

FWIW, Few days ago I was watching American Thunder on Speedvision.
(OK at that moment I didn't have a life). The were dyno-testing exhaust &
intake modes. The biggest HP & torque gain was registered by modifying the
stock airbox/filter while keeping the stock pipes. They gained a bit by then
going to aftermarket pipes but not much. How exactly that relates to a klr,
I don't know. Bogdan

I was also concerned about my Roadcrafter being hot; I wanted black cause it
looks good dirty. I was told it didn't make much difference. Sure enough it
doesn't seen to; I've ridden on many 100 + days. BTW, spring for the
