Guess I better bring my umbrella. :) At any rate, yeah, Chapparrall (how
many double letters are there supposed to be anyway). Also, Cycle City down
in El Toro often has good deals -- picked up a good one piece rain suit
there for cheap once -- but it's touch and go. And I strongly dis-recommend
them for tires -- they put the wrong size tire on my CBR, rather than tell
me they didn't have a tire for me. I've heard good and bad about Outrider in
Santa Monica, they're going through a strange management shakeup (wierd
divorce/psychodrama), so not sure how they are recently, but in the past
they had lots of sport bike gear. If you're looking for the flashy plastic
gear of the mx rider, Dual Sport Connection (Glendale) has a wide selection
of neon plastic&netting all over the store. I've got the Klingon outfit of
yore -- we could add some white accents to it and "convert" it to tuxhood
from a distance. :)

Subject: (klr650) warped brake disc repair
My KLR has a slightly warped disc.
Are there any methods to repair a warped brake disc? It would be nice to
not have to buy a new one. What's a new one list for? Those Map
Engineering discs sure look great, but I'm not sure I wanna spend the
$$$ on this bike yet.
Also, I just put a Progressive Suspension spring kit in the KLR. What a
difference!
So here's what I've done so far:
Suspension: put rear shock on maximum preload- was on lightest setting
,aforementioned spring replacement and seals- fork had about HALF the
recommended oil
Brakes: changed pads- were just about to the backing, changed fluid-
brakes were full of air
Carb- K&N kit with filter and jetting, carb was full of gunk, filter was
shot
Wiring Harness: fixed short in instrument sub harness was rubbing
against junction bracket
Tires: Gripsters kick serious ass
It's fun spending 500 bucks or so on a bike that I paid only 900 for
last month and changing it from a neglected sad case into one damn good
bike!
Just about time to do the flat black paint job- Muhuhuhuhawhawhawhaw!!!!
(squints eyes and wrings hands)

Kurt,
Right on the money (pun intended), but what about the airheads, R80 &R100GS.
My two "Dual Sports" are 92 R100GSPD and 93 XR650L, both bought used and
enjoy both. The BMW gets ridden much more because of points you mention
about the R11 and 2-up the big BM can't be beat for the long haul. The Honda
has all the dirt capability I need but is really a "Day Tripper" because of
its lack of comfort, windprotection and no luggage capability - but its a
hoot to ride. If I were lookn' for more "street sport" a VFR800 would be at
the top of the list with a XR650L for DS. And if I could only have one
bike, it would probably be a KLR :^)
But the point I want to raise is ; Cost of Ownership. Buy any new DS bike
and take a big hit. Buy the right used scoot and you can ride for FREE, well
almost. Check out the prices of used airhead GS's. R100GS $4,800-$6,500.
Ride it 2-20 years and sell for about the same (speculation on my part - but
look at the price of a R80GSPD, if you can find one). Beware there are some
weakness -electrics and driveshafts on the BM's. And buying used has some
risks -lemon factor. I don't believe any of the Jap and certainly none of
the Italian scooters hold there value better than the airhead GS's. BMW's
are not the right bike or the best bike for everyone. They are heavy, no,
they are very heavy for dirt work. The success of the GS is similar to that
of the KLR - don't do anything really well, but can and do perform adequately
under extremely diverse circumstances - ie Dual Sport. The airhead GS is a
good choice for some riding requirements and they do it on the cheap! I
still be happy wit mine :)

Juan,
One of my riding budies has a late model Husky 410 which is based on the
same engine as the 610. The bike is considered very reliable as racing
bikes go, but I'm not sure of how that would translate into long hours on
the street. They sure look cool though.

Mark you must consider these bike are high performance machines, Yes
they will require a lot more maintenance than say a KLR, I myself own an
Italian Motocross bike (500 cc 50 Plus H.P.) which it is a GREAT running and
looking bike, that Japan will never be able to match. And after owning
numerous jap bikes, I consider My Vertemati to be as reliable or better than
any other bike I have had.
RULE # 1 Buy an Italian Dirt bike and ride like the wind!!!!!!!!! LOL

Hi all:
I got a 93 KLR 650 with 20,000 km. Obviously I don't drive it that much but
am considering "dropping out" for a while and travelling on it. I know that
a lot of you guys and gals tour with this beast because it has that claw
hammer reliability and it truly is the Swiss Army Knife of motorcycles. The
problem is as we all know, after driving for a while, that it can also feel
as if we have been sitting on one of those versatile attachments. The
creature comforts are lacking to say the least. I know about Corbin,
Russell and other after market seats and comfort stuff. My main questions
are;
1. Did anybody ever just throw some bags on and take off on this thing in
its stock state?
if so then
2. How long a trip did you take, and what was it like?
I know there is probably no such thing really as a totally stock motorcycle
but I think you can get the spirit of my question which is about simple, and
frugal touring without torturing oneself. Realistically, I won't be going
very far on the stock seat. I was just wondering about other peoples
distance adventures on this thing in its nearly virgin condition. :-)
Thanks and here's hoping this will make a lively discussion.
BTW - I've been on this list for a while and really enjoy it.
Regards;
