on the other hand, i find the posts invaluable. complacency on the bike is
my enemy. hopefully these posts will raise my survival awareness to avoid
risk while riding, and be constantly looking for the way out of situations
over which i have no control.

Simply reaching just this single rider makes this whole crash poll thing
worth the time!

Subject: (klr650) NKLR Thank you
I just wanted to thank everyone for the overwhelming support and compassion I
received yesterday. This list is made up of a truly remarkable group of
people.
My Mom is recovering well from her surgery (surprising the doctors). It looks
like she will be in fairly good condition when it's time to fight the big
battle in 3 weeks. I truly think all the prayers are helping.
I think I'm going to do a little riding tomorrow for the first time in weeks,
to help maintain my sanity during this hectic period. I could use a little
stress relief, and my poor KLR must be getting pretty lonely by now.
Again, thank you all for the overwhelming response to my last post. I am very
proud and grateful to be a member of this list. You all deserve commendation
for your dignity and caring.

I saw a couple posts this week regarding jackets for riding and thought I'd
take the opportunity to plug my friend's company. I just ordered a jacket
and pants from him and will keep you posted on the fit, etc. once I actually
receive them.
The company name is Kitanica protective and they have a website
(www.kitanica.com) that you should check out if your in the market for
riding gear. All of their jackets are made of 1050 denier ballistic nylon
and 500 denier cordura. A lot of the jackets have built in padding on the
spine, kidneys, elbows, shoulders, etc. The materials used are high quality
and the look is extremely "Road Warrior". They are based in the Berkeley/San
Fran area and I think Beej Cronin (one of the owners) said he's working with
a motorcycle store there (but I don't know the name of it). If you need the
jacket in a hurry, these guys probably aren't for you (he gave me a shipping
time of about 3 weeks) but he took all of my measurements and is custom
tailoring the pieces for me.
Support the little guys til they become big and then we all get more
choices!!

Whoa, I don't know where you live Chucky, but where I live and ride, its a
statistical fact that over 80% of all accidents involving motorcycles are
the fault of automobiles. I can probably get you the URL if you want to
read it yourself....

Subject: (klr650) Performance mods for stock '87 KLR650
Hello all,
I have an 87 KLR650 A1 (first year I believe). Anyway, I bought it new in
California back then and rode it for a year. Its' been in storage pretty
much since then.
It's got 4k miles on it. I tried to resurrect it a few years ago, but when I
rode it the temp would go through the roof within a few miles. I took it to
the dealer and they told me it needed a new top end. I suppose I had a valve
rusted or something.
Anyway, to get to the point, I am considering buying a new bike but I have a
mint condition KLR with a bad engine. I put new tires, brakes, and plastic
on it so it looks sweet (back when I resurrected it). However, the blue book
on this thing is very low, so it I don't know if I want to dump a lot of
money into it.
My question is, *how much should a new top end cost me? **What do they
replace when they do this? Having ridden 2 strokes for years, I have never
been happy with the quickness of my KLR. If I keep it, I would like to put a
free flow exhaust and pipe on it. *Are there any comparisons/reviews on KLRs
with aftermarket pipes/exhaust? I live in Michigan (West Bloomfield) now, so
have no worries about California emissions or vehicle inspections.
I'd like to remove any CA emissions as well. ****Are there any 'easy'
modifications that I can make to increase power? Airbox mods, etc?
Sorry to ramble on. Any help would be appreciated.
P.s. For any other Michiganders out there, what are the rules for riding in
state parks? eg Highland or Indian Springs, Kensington.
Regards, Aaron K.

Choices!
I mean really, isn't that all the millenium is about? Here we are on
the
little Globe, in the little Solar system, in the little Universe and
WHALLAH?
The Humans gots choices. Know what I mean?
And I can look like a ROAD WARRIOR no less...............baby!
I wish they had the Bear-rug look. Or maybe early Java-man or Giant Ape
regalia.
I could make the choice to look really 'other-worldly' and be a
societal
peculiarity.........just what this Kawpokin
psuedo-extremo-conservo-philo-theo-
astro-uni-Posse goer would embellish! And all HERE on our shpere.
But then I was never much to go against the societal grain. Ya know.
Okay, stop joking, now really.......I want a new riding suit on Monday.
No. Really! Seriously!. Okay maybe Tuesday.....but that's it TUESDAY!!!!
Does anyone know where I can get, or view, the BEST selection of riding
wear in L.A.? Say from Escondido to Paso Robles? The best riding gear
selection
anyone has ever seen-----between LA and Santa Barbara?
Thanks everyone for the info. !!! Wish I could go Road
Warrior.....actually
I want a suit that looks like a Tux! Slide

Kurt,
Congrats on the wedding. My wife and I will have been married 18 years
this summer. I'm just getting back into riding following a similar length
absence. My wife isn't thrilled about me riding again, but she says it's
an essential part of my personality, and she wouldn't want to change it.
All the best!
