Good Question Andrew!
A loose valve clearance will allow the engine to develop less horse power
because the valves are not being held open as far and as long as when then
the valves are adjusted correctly. They will make noise and could damage
the heads of the valve if run this way for long.
A tight valve keeps the valve from closing completely and will allow burning
gases to erode the valve face and valve seat to where the engine is damaged.
Either situation is not good. This is why it is better to check the valve
clearances from time to time. A tight valve will do the damage faster than
a loose valve will.

hondas are assembled in ohio, but what is there american part

have had 10x the problems with my 89 harley than any of my jap

Sorry I started bashing. I really don't have any problem with the bikes but I
can't understand some of the people that buy them because they are lifestyle
accessories and spend more on clothes than they ever will on tires.
As far as the content mix on the bikes Honda makes in Ohio (I live there), I
think it is significant. There is a Showa facility here and they also make
engines in Ana, Ohio. I think Honda employs right around half as many people
as GM here, and there are a lot of GM facilities in Ohio (I think 7 business
units just in Dayton, where I live).
Again, sorry I jumped on the bashing, with 56K you obviously ride the thing.
Probably more than I got to ride this year, but that's another story!

I was hoping to visit my uncle in Redmond WA this May and was hoping to get in
some motorcycling along the way. Who do I call about having my KLR shipped from
SC to WA one way? My plan was to fly out, spend a day or two with my uncle and
then ride back.
Thanks.

I couldn't care less where what I buy is built. I'm not about trying to
inflate some lazy union workers lifestyle. Regardless, buying a harley
probably makes the marketing guys way more money than it ever helps the guys
building the stuff anyway. I buy thing based upon their functionality and
usefulness. I don't care what anybody else thinks, and I can't help but
laugh when I see the harley guys pull up. These guys probably don't put
more than a thousand miles a year on those things. They're just a bunch of
grown-ups, dressing up and playing pretend; they probably really liked
dressing up in those little cowboy outfits when they were kids. I can't
help but bust up laughing out loud when I see the guys with those dangly
things hanging from the handlebars, that's just like those plastic, colored
danglys the little six year old girls in my neighborhood had on their
bicycles (along with the training wheels) when I was a youngster.
If you want to ride, go out and get a motorcycle and ride. Don't worry
about some ideology about where it's built.
If you want to dress up and play pretend, go spend enough to buy two or
three motorcycles on one of those junk heaps they call harley, and oh yeah,
don't forget to spend enough for another motorcycle to get all your play
pretend outfits. Better make sure it's real loud, or people might not
notice your little girl dangly's hanging from the handle bars; it's pretty
obvious that harley guys are very concerned about what others think (can you
say peer pressure?). Oh by they way, you weren't thinking of riding it were
you? Better get a motorcycle in addition to the junk heap if you want to
actually go and ride.
Isn't this a listgroup concerning motorcycles? How come there's all this
stuff concerning harleys then? Enough (even though I'm pretty sure I just
made myself a target for tons of ignorant comments)

i doubt i'll ever buy a harley (not when bmw, triumph, guzzi, ducati, etc...
all make sweet bikes for less), but i still think they look cool. more
people on motorcycles, even if they're posers, can't be a bad thing. heck,
maybe some of them will pay a little bit more attention on monday-saturday
when they're tooling around in their minivans and lexuses.
