I know two friends who witnessed the destruction of two separate Hummers, in
two separate instances.
Situation one was in Alaska: My coworker was there TDY (Temporary DutY for
the civilians on the list) and some cops had been patrolling the base. It
was "cold" (don't know how cold) but the thing caught fire! Engine just
went up before anything could really be done.
Situation two: Kuwait. After the "Blood For Oil" was of the early 90's,
another friend (another aircraft electrician, also!) saw some SP's
attempting to get up an aircraft shelter which had been abandoned. Going up
wasn't a problem. Going down however... Don't know how it happened, but
they bottomed out pretty badly. Quite horribly, actually. It managed to
limp away, but was in need of some serious work later.
Not trying to rip on Hummers, if I could own one, I'd have to sell it post
haste for the cost of insurance alone! *lol* Dunno if military Hummers
aren't as good as the civvy ones, but those two took a bit of abuse.
Chances are that the owners of a civvy Hummer can afford better and more
regular maintenance on them....
As far as a bike I would own to go along with the Hummer Beast? Cripes,
thinking about it, I can only venture one thing. The KLR 650 (Y2K model)
I'll be getting later this month! I can't wait for my "Swamp Thing"!
Though I live in the desert, will it be a "Desert Thing"?

They say there not even for sale yet online.
If they are available, I can get them for you. I have their new catalog and
if you would like to see a picture of the New Flag Handguards, I can send
you one or I can put it on a web page for all to see.
They are kind of neat "techy" looking guards.

hi gang,
I was wondering if you could give me your opinions of the best yr
model(s) of the klr650.
I currently own a 84klr600, and am pretty much happy w/ it. But, I would
like to upgrade to a model that I can accessorize easier [buy, instead of
fabricate].
the model(s) I'm looking for are ones that MUST have:
1) both electric and kick start
2) rear disc brake
thanks in advance,
john in WV

Is there any hand gaurds out there that match the new green of the klr?
I'd say there's a very good chance that olive drab guards exist. The U.S.
Marine Corps probably uses them on their KLR650s. They might've
contracted exclusively for them though. You might try Dual Star for more
information.

From what I've heard Excelsior-Henderson has:
1) Sold stock in it's company before it had a product, or even finished a
manufacturing plant.
2) Not been able to meet deadline to get it's product to market.
3) Priced it's product at approx. $20,000.
4)Not advertised it's product. (Has anyone ever seen a print ad anywhere?).
5) Established no visible distribution/dealer network.
Easy to see why E-H would be facing such huge financial difficulties.

Kenneth, if the '95 is a good sound bike and the price is right there is
no reason not to go for it...the clutch and balancer chain mechanisms
can be updated and there are plenty of listers who are riding without
the update and do not report problems.
As for evaluating what you're getting it is not to hard to tell a good
buy from a used one. For example, if you ask the owner how often he has
adjusted the balancer chain and he just stares at you it is a good
indication he never really understood the KLR. If he says every 500
miles ask him to help you remember how it is adjusted...(It is on the
way lower left side of the engine beneath a little rubber plug). Beyond
that ask him to show you some indication of its maintenance history. How
does the bike look? Trust your eyes and ears. If you get a bad feeling
about any of it walk...there a lots of KLR's available...shucks, I know
a pristine '98 for sale right here in Salt Lake City...(g)...

all things being equal a '96 or newer to take advantage of upgraded
clutch and balancer chain mechanisms...but they can be upgraded on an
earlier model and from '87 through '95 there are only cosmetic
differences. None of the KLR650's came stock with a kick start but it
was an option for pre-'96's if you can find the kit. It is not
compatible with the clutch upgrades. Try Fred at
www.arrowheadmotorsports.com . All the A models had rear disc bakes.

Subject: (klr650) Y2K KLR650 - $5,400 out the door - Good price?
I'm thinking of buying myself a new KLR 650 for my 40th birthday. I've had
a few bikes over many years: various scooters, one VFR750, one Harley, one
Shadow. Never had a trail bike and I don't plan serious off-road stuff. I
just like the KLR for the reliability, the big gas tank, the upright riding
position, the simplicity and the PRICE. (Got rid of the Harley because I
don't like washing and shining on weekends. Chrome was rusted after two
years.) I'll be riding in Las Vegas and Southern California. Need
something to beat the city traffic.
Dealer in Vegas quoted me for Y2K KLR as follows:
MSRP 4,899
Setup 150
Papers 89
=====
Total 5,138
Tax 373
=====
5,511
Then he said $5,400 out the door. Later he said he'd drop a further $200
for cash.
So three questions:
1. Is $5,200 a good cash price for a Y2K KLR650?
2. Anyone know a better deal available in Southern California?
3. Anyone got a 98/99 low-miles used KLR for, say, $4,000 or less?
Thanks. I'll let you know what happens.
Fergal

No

Temple City PowerSports will get you one for $4800.00 out the door and throw in $200.00 in extra goodies of your choice.
3. Anyone got a 98/99 low-miles used KLR for, say, $4,000 or less?
Go to recycler.com and search motorcycle section for KLR.
