The success of the Yamaha YZ400F has lit the fire under all the bike
builders to come up with high performance 4-stroke thumpers. Plus the fact
that 2-strokes may be on their way out due to the "save the world from
motorcycles" crowd who continue to ignore the massive amounts of air
pollution that cows. volcanoes, and vegetation spew into the atmosphere.
Oh I forgot, nature is GoOD, man is dEVIL.

Not all cylinder heads and camshafts are equal. The KLR head design
dates back to the KLR600 of 1984.
No doubt the 400 will rev higher than the KLR to make its power, too.
Bear in mind Honda is claiming approx 61ps for the new XR650, so
there's been a lot of development going on in Japan lately.

More is not always better. More H.P. = more Stress = more Wear = less
reliable = shorter engine life. Unless everything else is also designed to
better withstand the added H.P. Then my equation may not hold water.

O.K... lets count.
KLR650 = 38 (claimed) horsepower.
DR400 = 47 (claimed) horsepower.
And the BIG thumpers (as in the new XR650) are claiming beyond 60
horsepower.

Subject: (klr650) Strangling in the rain
To all listers who put up with this topic a year or so ago, please pardon
the resurrection; I hope there may be a few new listers who have some
experiences or suggestions to share.
My '98 KLR, just like my '86 KLR before it, frequently strangles in heavy
rain, typically when riding at high speed in heavy traffic. A couple of
other listers have reported this problem, although it doesn't seem to be
common. I generally get stopped by it 3 or 4 times every winter (4 times so
far this year, and there are still a few wet months to go here in Seattle).
When this happens, the bike sputters as though it is running out of fuel.
Sometimes it can be nursed along and kept running, sometimes not. Usually
the bike starts up again after a 5 to 15 minute wait, although it usually
will then continue to sputter and die every 2 to 3 miles (but sometimes it
will run fine after recovering). For a long time I thought that the problem
was a saturated air filter, as the problem usually occurred after about 30
minutes of riding, and the air filter would then be saturated, and wringing
out the filter (easier to do on the 600 than the 650) would get it going
again. However, twice this year the bike has died within 5 minutes of
starting off in heavy rain, when the air filter was not saturated. Venting
of the tank and carburetor do not appear to be the problem, nor is carb
icing evidently the cause (judging by carb temperature), and I have
dielectric grease on plug and coil connections. If I keep running the bike
until the engine stops entirely, then frequently when it finally restarts,
the engine briefly runs rough, as though the plug is wet--thus, I suspect
that the problem is with air rather than fuel or electrics. However, I am
open to any suggestions anybody has to offer. I'm finally starting to get
tired of this.

I dunno...sounds like rain is the problem, not air. [g]
Aside from electrical, the archives list gas tank vent
and carb vacuum hoses as possible solutions.
If it dies again, I'd find a sheltered spot to drain the float
bowl and check to see if the sample is contaminated with
water. The carb vent hose could be sucking in some mist.
Any cracks in the carb boots?

OK, here's a new one for you guys. I'm ready to check my valves for the
10km service tomorrow. I'm also going to pull my plug out for the first
time. In Eldon Carl's instructions it says "DO NOT remove the spark plug
because the automatic compression release is always on duty". Ok, what is
this compression release thingy anyway and how does it work? Why would it
be so bad to pull the plug at this time or any time?
Thanks for the info!

Is there a way to RAISE a KLR? On many of my off road rides this season
I bottomed out my rear suspension quite easily. I know there are a couple
of shocks out there that will properly stiffen the beast up, but will they
also raise the machine up a bit as well? More ground clearance would be a
good thing.
Thanks!

a few,
Hey FRED whats the scoop, Lets here it. KLR people want to no, And give

Although popping the gas cap solved the problem twice (some years ago), it
doesn't usually. (I could crack the cap while riding on the 600, although
not on the 650.)
If by "carb vacuum hose" you mean the vacuum line to the petcock, this can't
be it because the 600 doesn't have a vacuum-operated diaphragm in the
petcock.
The carb boots are fine. Moisture in the carb vent hose remains a
possibility, although I've tried shaking it to remove any blockage when
stopped, rerouting it, and cutting the tip at an angle to facilitate
drainage. I'll try draining the float bowl next time I get stopped
somewhere near cover. Why would the bike recover from water in the float
bowl after a few minutes, though?

It is Elden speak....he just makes it sound like something bad is going
to happen...all he is saying is that you don't need to remove the spark
plug to hand crank the motor for the valve adjustment...in other words,
to release the compression...the automatic compression release is on the
end of the forward crankshaft effecting the exhaust valves...BTW, stuff
some rags or something in the gap created in front of the camshafts so
you don't drop any bolts down there...(g)
