Go by the book. And the question is, how on earth can the mechanic know
the valves are in spec just by listening to them?

Subject: (klr650) PLASTIC/TANK RETROFIT KIT?
Hello All,
I remember that a little while back someone said that Dualstar (I think) was
going to put together a package of tank, plastic, etc. for retrofitting older
KLR's. Anyone know what this costs? The tank on my A1 has been brazed
twice (before I got it), and it has me a little worried. Also, anyone know
of an aftermarked plastic tank which would work and have the same or greater
capacity?
Thanks!
Mike Campbell

This guy's got a great ear; no brains and/or no conscience but a
great ear. Actually HE sounds like a flaming asshole (don't like that mental
picture). Friend Larry, I strongly advise you to find another shop or do the
job yourself. He won't do the job right or won't do it at all and charge you
for it. Plenty of documentation on the list of such behavior. The first
adjustment is the most important; the second a bit less important, and so
the curve flattens. Was there enough info in that chatter? Bogdan

Amen! I have been a digest subscriber since the list started. I have read
through all of the emotional discussions including the latest one. I usually
just wait to see where we are going next.
Arne, you are doing a fantastic job with very little thanks. You need to know
that we all appreciate it. Should this list get away from the primary topic
of KLRs, I'm sure that a new one would spin off to take care of those of us
who are after that specific information.
Hope we can learn to get along.

Ditto and either watch him do it of mark the valve covers so you know he
actually did the valve inspec/adjust - a number of members including myself
suspect many shops are just charging for the valve work and not doing it.
If you are at all familiar with motorcycles I would book a valve adjust when
your first service is due and then ask them to look over the bike while they
are at it - you just might get them thinking outside the tiny box they are
in...=)
Cheers,
Vik

no, I don't think the winter slowdown is the deciding factor but more
generally I think you're right...geographical regions have entirely
different experiences with KLR sales. Bottomline is some dealers can get
way above list and live themselves and others will discount. It is truly
shoppers' beware. In Salt Lake City, one dealer deals the other doesn't.
That's just the way it is....

Many listers have had this experience. Even more, some dealers will
agree to check the valves and not do it. The archives contain many
examples. If you're interested in keeping your bike in top shape follow
the break-in procedures and have your valves checked at 500 miles. I
drive like a gandpa (I'm old enough to be one) checked mine at 500,
1500, 3500, and 7000 miles and had tight valves on all but 3500 miles.
Ask him to record the clearances on each valve so you can monitor their
progress.

it depends entirely on its condition, here in Utah I would expect a good
example to go from $850-$1,750...prices have been substantially lower
the last two years. Fred? It has an odometer?

Hi Mike, no, you'll just have to call DualStar and hope you can get
through to Mike and see what he's got. IMS makes a plastic tank for the
KLR. It is slightly less in capacity...Fred can get it for you.

Hi there;
Thanx for Your input guys .. special Thanx for Bogdan Swider...
by the way isn't it because Your last name Mr.Bodgan ... thus
Swider translates loosely from polish as a DRILL BIT .. and
as your name suggest You ALWAYS get to the core of the problem
with so graceful easy.. :-) ...
Here is what I have done:
1. I run both bikes for about 150 miles .. (various rpm)
2. readjusted cam chain tensioner .. (just in case)
3. I have got to the valves again to recheck their clearances
.. --- They are almost perfectly lying in the middle of the
spec...
4. put everything back together ...
5. Enjoyed priceless peace .. :-)
Findings:
--- it seems clear to me that a new KLR is sold with the valve
clearance set right on the middle ( or somewhere near that
point) - quite understandable taking under consideration strict
quality control at the assembly line ... MANY OF YOU NOTICED
THAT CLICKING NOISE I WAS BLABBING ABOUT ---AND I REMEMBER THIS
NOISE MYSELF.
--- after ~500 initial miles ... valves got settle down in
their seats ... reducing clearance --->( actually bringing
clearance down to the "tight side" of the spec)
NOISE IS GONE OR GREATLY REDUCED -->MANY OD YOU INCLUDING
ME, appreciated that change ---> but it does not seem to be "a
perfectly good sign"
--- CHECK< CHECK < CHECK YOUR VALVE CLEARANCE .... SIMPLE AND
VERY EDUCATIVE EXPERIENCE ..... and keep it where it supposed
to be ... then your very own ONE MAN CARAVAN (KLR650) ... will
take You around a Globe .... Just let her be herself ... :-)
ps.... I can't see how You can use valve compressor on KLR ...
beside .. shim exchange is so simple that ANY convenience from
using valve compressor should not justify carrying an extra
tool with You ... ---> just my personal opinion :-)

I believe that JC Whitney MC catalog has such a tool listed and one is
Kawasaki specific. Don't have catalog with me so can't give catalog # or page
#. If anyone tries it please advise the list as I was/am curious myself. It
is really a simple lever device with a curve and hook on the end that would
seem to depress the valve so that shims could be removed without taking cam
off. Jim-A13-Cocoa

I second this! The cost of checking is always less than the cost of fixing.
