It's a chemical process that lightly etches the steel and deposits a
thin coating of a phosphate compound, manganese phosphate being a common
one. Common applications are firearms and certain older model Harley
Davidson restorations. Common colors are flat gray and charcoal black. The
etched, matte surface o0f the parkerizing leaves a very good surface for
bonding of the subsequent coats of enamel (laquer, actualy) , which are then
baked in an oven. The stuff I use calls for three thin coats with ten min.
drying in between coats, then baking at 350 deg F for 35 min. This
combination is very, very tough to beat in my experience.
As for aluminum, the other listers statement about the enamel on
aluminum is true: you can probably get much better adhesion by using the
approaches he outlined However, for many applications the Brownell's Baking
Laquer I use sticks to beat-blasted and preheated aluminum well enough for
many applications.

Not to worry. My bike is completly stock and at interstate speeds with a
full load, so I am running mostly on the main jet, I get soot on the Happy
Trails rack and rear fender. I think the main jet is a little rich in stock
form. This was riding from central Iowa out to Denver and back.

Well Kawasaki is bringing out a diesel Mule and Polaris is bringing out a

fuel mileage.

IT WILL be great fuel mileage, but more importantly is that it will be great
torque. Diesels deliver torque far better than gasoline powered engines of
similiar displacement and horsepower.

So I take what you're saying is one couldn't install the pre 96 option on a
2000 model?
I know how you know <G> While touring the Blue Ridge Parkway and the east
coast during the month of Feburary, the temps never got above 35. I was
looking like a freak genetic
cross between Pilsbury and Michelin .... I don't think I could have push
started. The kicker
came in handy as all I had to do was catch it with my boot as I got on and
it fired right up.

Dear Friends,
I've been lurking in the background (digest mode) for quite a while because
work has been overwhelming. Now I will be on vacation, travelling to
Europe, and back only sometimes mid-January.
I just wanted to wish you guys a safe and happy Christmas, if you still
ride, watch out for those icy spots (I almost fell last week, damn it!) and
have a wonderful, successful, healthy, joyful, etc. next thousand years!
Many happy kilometres!
cheers,
istvan

I don't hang around that crowd much but I know what your talking about. My
Wing is built
in America, the fit and finish proves it(YUK). As a matter-o-fact, it's made
in Ohio just a
couple of hours from here. I didn't take your note personally ... takes a
LOT more than that
to get to me <G>!
BTW .... just got off the phone with a buyer for the Wing!!! Looks like the
KLR is just around
the corner .... 'course, there IS that XR650L sitting at a dealer between me
and the KLR.
Do you know of any comparisons between the two? I'm really itching for the
XR as bad as
for the KLR.

Many thanks to Richard, Kurt, Arne, Fredboe, Bill, Tom, Wayne and
anyone else who helped with my carb problem. Took a 160 mile ride out
to the desert and it ran great. Both bikes are running at the same
time, it doesn't get much better.

Thanks for the info Tom (and everyone else). I've heard that acid etching
aluminum is also a good prep for pre-painting.

my experience came scouting elk on a private ranch in eastern oregon.
battery dead when i stopped for gas some harley riders had their kid give me
the first push. after that it was horsing the beast around to get downhill
after dumping on trackless downslopes, or running prayer on near flat roads.
damn tiring but i got good at fading the clutch. would have liked the
kickstart but don't know yet that it's worth the investment. made it home.

The list kept him sharp... he's obviously softened up since his departure.
