Subject: (klr650) Bash Plates
Since we're on the subject of bash plates, I thought I'd interject
something. As some of you know, I have the White Brothers plate. It is
made of a very stout aluminum. It is thicker that the Moose and MSR (one in
the same), but does not come up quite as high as these do on the sides.
The FIRST TIME I went off-road with my new plate, I took a hit that snapped
the cheesy little stock bolt and squished the stock mounting point. I then
proceeded to partially curl the bash plate up under the bike. A couple
zip-ties later and I made it home fine... Moral of the story? In matters
such as these, aesthetics are somewhat irrelevant. Powder coating a bash
plate? Looks nice sure... if you never ride off road - but then you don't
need the plate anyways. After I got home I had to pull the plate and
straighten it out on the anvil. Then I had to have some welding done on it.
No amount of powder coating would have stood up to this.
I have modified my plate by boring a hole to access the oil drain plug, and
to accept a u-bolt in the front. Aesthetically this was not as pleasing as
the original designers intended - which was to utilize the stock plastic
plate mounting point - but the stock mounting point does little more than
hold the plate in place until that first big hit.
Cheers,
Arne

Since I outweigh Bogdan by at least 120 lbs - I'm sure he gets away with
being on top more than I do. I'm pretty much relegated to the bottom. I
won't get into my gymastics background...

I was going to do this except that there are quite a few people on the list
who don't read their NKLR mail - they either just delete it manually, or
they have it automatically routed to the trash. I figured everyone should
get a read at it the first time. Good on you though for picking up on that.

I remember when Kurt instructed me that posting below the original message
was the way it should be done. It made sense to me then, so I'm carrying on
the tradition. If you would rather be on top, hey fill your boots. No
sweat off my back - there's too much hair for that. I have to say though
that your memory must be better than mine... Everytime I read a post that's
above an original message, I find myself perusing down to find out which
topic or idea is being responded to, in order to put things into the context
they should be in.
I was going to do this except that there are quite a few people on the list

I'm not sure I understand the anatomy as stated in your question. I
and other klristas have experienced the pads compressing against the rotor
after a tire has been changed and not allowing the wheel to move. If memory
serves me right I loosened the piston by pushing it in & out; then
everything was fine. Bogdan
OK, I'll try restating my question. While changing rear brake pads,
has
anyone ever noticed the black plastic-like round thing that sits in
the
piston moving about freely? Did it move about, slide out on its
own, or was
it rock solid and didn't move about at all?
Thanks,

George, I think we can fix this. I would guess it is still not getting fuel.
Did you set the float height? Did you take the carb apart? Did you make sure
not to drop the collar at the end of the main jet? All the jets clean?
Vacuum line tight from the carb to the petcock? How about mounting a plastic
bottle with fuel to the fuel line just to make sure it is not petcock
related?
Fred, are you there?

Have a great holiday season and wonderful New Year! This has been most
helpful and entertaining, but I need to get cracking the books if I'm to
be invited back next semester! I can't keep putzing on the computer
waiting for humorous replies! Although it makes the time-out between
classes pass rapidly, thanks! Again, thank you Fred, you've been most
helpful. ( I have to tell you though, working on the KLR is so much
easier than changing the glow plugs and oil in my diesel!)
When I get back from Baja, my brother and I are thinking of putting a web
page together for fun. Should be an entertaining story and some great
pictures of my bike! ( I try to stay far away from the camera!) Fred, you
have some mail coming, do with it what you like, that's why I'm signing
off! Everyone enjoy the holidays! I feel like I'm going to miss
something!
Take care,
Heather

I would suggest cranking it a few times (plenty of times) and then pulling
the plug....you could see if there is a lot of gas (or any gas) on the plug
electrode area (which would be indicative of possible flooding)to make sure
the fuel is reaching the combustion chamber.......and then you could double
check for spark. After that, it's timing, and of course, air supply, or
compression . Usually.

I am probably not the only one to speak what should be obvious, but when
changing brake pads, loosen the bleeder valve a tiny bit...it'll let the
piston slide back and forth to where you want it....and though you shouldn't
need to, you can bleed out any air in about two seconds, when you're done
replacing pads.
