Listers,
I pulled off my carb to clean out the dirt that was in it. The dirt
either got in because of bad Mexican gas or leaked in by way of the
air filter. Anyway I removed the plug on the pilot jet and found the
jet screwed all the way seated. Is this usual? it seemed to run O.K.
thanks

I know I'm new to the list and I don't want to cause trouble, but.... wouldn't it be better if we simply replied to the list only and not the person who sent it also. That we we do not receive multiple messages like I am on the Tire Balancing thread. Isn't there a way to do this automagically through the list administration tools? Just a thought... I'll go away now.

Subject: (klr650) NKLR - Rack Choices
I'm trying to sort out the choices of bags and racks available.
After reviewing the archives, I've pretty well settled on the
Aerostich-marketed Dry Bags as being the best match to my needs. The
confusing part to me is picking the right rack/bag support.
The collective's opinion would seem to be that the Kawasaki support isn't
worth having.
The Dual Star heat shield would seem to be the most cost-effective choice
($35), but the plastic would still get scuffed.
The Bernard racks and the Drive Line racks both get good reviews. Are they
one and the same? If not, how do they differ? They both cost around
$130-150, correct?
The MAC-D rack on MotorMark's page looks really substantial, but I'm not
sure where it can be purchased and at what price.
http://www.angelfire.com/mo/motormark/macd.html
So... Given that I'm looking at the Dry Bags, what can I get by with? What
will I be happiest with?
My alternative choice is the Kawi bags, which have the advantage of the
insulation on the exhaust side. If I went that route, I would probably

They are the same and now called Happy Trails...if you're sure you will not
require mounting for fixed luggage the "originals" are the lightest, best
looking and most economical at $145. You can see them at
http://members.tripod.com/happytrail/original_racks.htm. Tim's site is
www.happy-trail.com. The Northwest rack is Happy-Trail's most economical
rack for fixed and non-fixed luggage.
You can see Arne Larsen's rack at www.mac-d.com a great value and well built
for both fixed and non-fixed. You can't go wrong with either of the
choices...

Same for me, except I got over 12,000 miles from my last Gripster
rear. However, I don't recall having gone offroad with it.
Loaded up out on the highway, I'd use about 36-38psi in the rear.

Day to day running on the street and 32-34 psi is about right, and
maybe using 2-3psi less for track days or hard use in the twisties.
When loaded up and hitting the highway, you have to pump them up to
make them last.
I forget what the max cold inflation is for Gripsters, maybe 40 or
42psi.

I'm only guessing here, but I suppose the direct reply is to make
it simpler for those who may receive only the digest version by not
having to sift through a potentially large range of messages in a
single email.
It doesn't make a lot of difference to me as anything with "klr" in
the subject is filtered into a particular folder.

First off, let's get the terminology right.
The screw behind the plug is the mixture screw or pilot adjuster
screw. The pilot jet lives inside the float bowl.
Anyway, the bike should, in theory, barely run or not run at all
with the pilot screw all the way in, so something fishy is going on.

I never said that his technique was wrong, it isn't. What is incorrect is
his explaination of how it works.
I guess it is beyond the scope of a simple email to impart a good
understanding of these concepts to everyone. It really takes physics and
statics studies.

A few good diagrams (not ASCII) would make all the differece.

Subject: (klr650) Howdy all- Newbie Alert!!
Howdy All,
My name's Kevin Seiler. I live in San Diego. I've been riding for 15
years, I'm 31 and I just bought an 89 KLR 650 (A3?). My other bikes are
a 72 Norton Commando and an 80 Guzzi Lemans 2. This will be my first
Japanese bike in 12 years.
I just picked up the bike yesterday and the fan doesn't seem to come on.
It's seems to run cool (temp gauge doesn't get past 1/2 way). Should the
fan come on only when it's really hot or something- which would just
make me paranoid about overheating. I've been looking for a fuse for the
radiator fan and can't seem to find it. I saw on the Tech Tips that the
fuse should be by the coolant tank (the example bike was an A13 , and I
was wondering if the early bikes don't have a fuse) , but I can't seem
to find it. Is The headlight fuse was blown and I guess that's pretty
common. I put in a new one and it seems to fine now.
Does anyone on this list make a book of helpful tips for these bikes?
There is a great book for Guzzi nuts called "Guzziology" and I was
wondering if there was a similar species of the Kawalski variety.
One last thing, I intend to do some sort of a camo/flat black (with
reflective stickers) death biker of the apocalypse paint thing on this
bike. Is there a photo gallery out there for KLR evil rat bike ideas?
tia,
Kevin
