No worries... we'll work a tag team next time and one of us will distract
Kilarney while the other one puts the moves on Dawn...

again, like Arne, no flaming just chatting. I found the opposite, I've
never ridden a bike with a wider powerband, it felt like you could idle
it in top gear and take it up to redline with no hesitation...brakes
were outstanding. A 12 second bike with this kind of weight?
Unbelievable....I'd buy one except for the terrible reports of mpg....

So Hey...
Arne, just what type of mpg did your Valkyrie get, and why did you get
rid of it? I am curious as my children and wife agree that I should get
both a KLR and a Vlakyrie (I think I'll have to give up eating to afford
'em both). I suppose that if I traded in my Silverwing and put down a
couple of Gs it could be done, but a gentleman I spoke with at South Bay
Motorsports in Chula Vista said he gets about "15 mpg aound town, and up
to 30 mpg on the highway." He was on a GL1500, but OUCH!!! I just
don't think I could afford to ride the bike very much. Am I a wuss or what?
By the way, Robert Morgan, are you the same "Bob Morgan" that worked in
the E.T. shop at the 32ND Street Naval Station in San Diego a couple of
years back and rode a V65 Magna?
Thanks

I am working on a demo ride, I got the guys card. He is in L.A. and welcomed
me up. There is also a dealer in here in San Diego. Looks good for 2 up
riding, although not quite as roomy as the GS. Then again I don't know if
the GS is $5k roomier either.

Well I'm looking at Givi's, as another bike is in my future, and I like the
ability to swap bags from one bike to another. (shh.... its a secret, but it
most likely begins with the letters ZRX, or ZX9, but is not yet finalized).
I'm selling my setup for the KLR that includes the following:
Hepco Becker racks
Touratech quick-release luggage mounts
Pelican 1550 cases
All stainless fasteners and washers (except for two long allens, couldn't
get those anywhere!)
The setup is ready to bolt on to a KLR. $400 obo.

Subject: (klr650) NKLR & Valkyrie
Sorry, I was unclear. By short power spread I meant that I kept bumping
into the redline. WHat I should have said was that the engine didn't have
enough revs before coming into the redline zone. ie. that it didn't rev
high enough and I had to shift "before I knew it". Thus, it certainly was
not sluggish, it *was* powerful - it's just that I expected more based on
the Speedvision ads. I guess that coming off the CBR1100XX and hopping onto
the Valkyrie is perhaps one reason why I was disappointed.
I did ride it as hard as I could without flogging it and driving
dangerously. Also, this was an escorted ride. However unlike other escorted
rides that I have been on, the pace in this case (a rhyme!) was excellent.
It was a small group, everyone seemed well-experienced, conditions were
perfect and the roads were nice so we were able to get a taste of what the
bikes were capable of.
And Arne, yes, you're right I guess. I am comparing apples and oranges - in
a sense, but then again, they are still motorcycles. For a cruiser (and
again, meaning no offense) it is a good one based on reviews that I've
read. For a bike that I would want to ride just for the fun of it - it
doesn't cut it, * for me *. Again, this is merely my opinion. Others are of
course entitled to their own opinions and yes, they (the bikes) do not seem
to sit on the showroom floors for long so others must share your thoughts.
As for the seating position, I personally found it uncomfortable - maybe
we're built differently :)
<<Thats why you see a lot of slightly used ones for sale.>>
The above wasn't *my* comment, btw.

Well, after riding 1000+ miles with the quiet baffle and spark arrestor, I
must say I highly recommend them. The loud baffle is just ridiculously
loud. Right now, its just a healthy loud. I was camping next to a pond
filled with ducks, cranes, and swans, and none of them even twitched when I
started up, warmed up, and rode away.

I'm planning to leave frozen Toronto for a couple of weeks in early Feb.
'00. Leave around Feb. 5, return 10 or 14 days days later. Thinking of
renting a bike in Mexico and seeing the country. Anybody feel like going
along? No plans as to where to go within Mexico yet. I'm open to
suggestions. The place where I plan to get the bikes is called Mototours
and they rent R1100GS, F650 and the KLR650. I plan to rent a KLR which will
also serve as a good test ride to allow me to decide if this is the bike I
want to buy for my around-the-world-trip.
Let me know if interested...

After 10,000 miles my front OEM Dunlop was worn out at the same time as =
my second rear OEM Dunlop. Considered buying the "military" takeoffs, =
but instead went with the Gripsters - wanted to see what all the =
comments were about.
Have taken two rides so far: 50 miles of 80/20 and the 20 pretty smooth =
fire roads at that and 110 miles of 50/50, over Reddington pass and up =
the back side of MT. Lemmon here in Tucson.=20
The Gripsters may be better on the asphalt, but my opinion is they are =
not as good in the dirt as the OEM's. Had my first front-end washout =
with the KLR today on a road that I've been on 4-5 times before and on a =
switchback (loose gravel) similar to ones I've done 100's of times =
before. Maybe I would have gone down on the OEM's today too, who knows, =
but I never have in the past. Overall, the Gripsters just don't feel as =
planted when going through anything loose at all. I can't imagine what =
they'd be like in deep sand or gooey mud. Air pressure was 20-24 same =
as I rode the OEM's in the dirt.=20

From: "Randy Golla" <dolph92@hotmail.com>
Subject: (klr650) Center of Gravity
Standing does raise the center of gravity of the bike. You have to look at
the whole picture (the bike and the rider). It does matter where the weight
sits on the bike the seat or the pegs. If you stand up it moves the weight
of your body up along the y axis thus moving the c.g. up you have to look at
C.G. in a three axis view. the c.g of a bike is determined by where the
weight of the bike is equel in all the three axises (x,y,z) if you stand up
the c.g raises on the y (up and down) axis. If you move right or left the
c.g. moves in the X axis (left and Right,) forward and back is the z axis.
It does matter if the rider has his weight on the pegs or the seat because
of the placement of each spot on the bike and where the tires hit the
ground. the best thing to keep the front tire from pushing out is to keep
the weight of the bike off it as much as possible to a point if the front
end is too light it will still push. Traction is only had when the tire has
enough weight to make some traction(ex. tire off the ground you can't
turn;-)(Ex.2 when you leave a corner hard on the gas and your getting the
front wheel light and you start to push). But if the weight on the tire gets
to be to much the tire can't hold traction and it washes out(ex. you hit the
brakes and the weight shifts to the front tire in a corner and ouch your on
your can). This is the problem we have a lot of. The bad thing is you cant
over come this totally because of the weight of our bikes. So what do you
do? Try to shift your weight so that both tires are taking equal amounts of
weight. the old 50/50 weight dispursement thing. If I'm on the gas going
around the corner and the front gets light I Shift forward. If I'm on the
brakes and the front gets to heavy in a corner I shift back to make the
front lighter. I don't stand up other than than to move or really heave my
weight sround. You can see this in them big super bike races the riders
enter a corner they are on the brakes and they are leaning back on the seat
then when they exit the corner they slide forward and ham on it then thay
tuck and run with it through the straight. Lean back get on the brake lean
back forward and do it all over again.
Ok I think I strained something thinking about this I need a beer to fix it
Randy
