I went through that a couple years ago. The term Dual Purpose is all but
lost... If only drum brakes had been lost with it. lol
I too am new to this list, and do not actually have a KLR. I have a KLX650
dual sport. A tad more off-road oriented than the KLR.
I've had to do the valves on my KLX twice in 4,000 miles. But it is not
hard, so it only costs about $60 with a local mechanic. Can't do it at home,
you gotta have replaceable shims to do the adjustment.

I deleted the message, so I forget who asked the question, but someone
was asking about a bike to replace an aging CX500. He looked at the
Concours and the KLR, and he was wanting to avoid having to do much
maintenance on the bike.
Might I be so bold as to suggest a Vulcan 750? This bike has shaft
drive, cast wheels, and hydraulically adjusted valves. Other than oil
changes, it has virtually no maintenance requirements. One of the main
reasons I chose the KLR over the Vulcan was that the Vulcan didn't have
enough leg room for me (I have a 36" inseam). But it sounds like this
other fine Kawasaki might just meet your needs.
As a side note, I find it interesting that all three bikes I looked at
- -- the KLR, the Concours, and the Vulcan 750 -- were Kawasaki's. When
I was a younger rider all the bikes I owned and wanted were Hondas.
It's kind of scary how well Big K understands my brain.

Saludos compadre Lamar,
I had the same problem. What I did was to reattach the tab to the shroud
with epoxic resins. I shaped the resin like a volcano with the tab at the
"crater". After the resin cured, I deatached the tab again and applied a
permanent plastic bonding agent.
I followed this procedure because the epoxic resin alone will not bond well
enough to the plastic shroud and will eventually break loose again. When I
deattached the tab , I had a flat surface attached to it with enough
contact area that I could glue both together permanently (so far, anyway).
It has worked fine for me.

Got it installed last weekend. Had a 350 mile ride. Will write up a more
comprehensive review when I have time. May take a while as my wife is in the
hospital until at least 12/3. Took two hours to install. Spring is labeled as
500/560 progressive. I discovered that I have been using the rubber bumper as
my suspension. The new spring with no preload (setting #1) allow for 2-1/2 to
3" of sag static. This raised the rear of my bike considerably. I started
with preload set at #1 and damping set at #2. The only load on the bike was
the rider about 300 pounds. Ride is very much improved. I need to increase
the preload a little and the damping at least one notch. With increased load
like luggage I will probably increase both the damping and the preload two
notches.
A few unexpected results of the change include improved cornering and less
straight line stability (not too bad). This is due to the revised attitude of
the bike in riding trim. My windshield seems shorter by two inches, again due
to the rear suspension not being close to bottom all of the time. The
progressive fork springs work even better than before. The headlight needs to
be reaimed or you wind up looking at your front fender after dark.
For you heavy weights out there this is well worth the cost, around $90 for
the spring and not too difficult ot install.
I will try to respond to ant direct questions as time allows.

I'm one of those heavyweights... Did you have to use some special plastic
spacers to make the spring fit the KLR shock (like is needed with the Panama
spring) or does it fit properly as-is? How does the cost compare to the
Progressive Panama spring?
Cheers,
Arne

Assuming you haven't lost any small parts, you're in luck. I did the exact
same thing trying get my KLR over Mosquito Pass in Colorado. I successfully
reattached the little tab using J B Weld. JBW is the ultimate general
purpose epoxy.

For GPS geeks, Imogene pass is at N37deg55.905min, W107deg44.099min. It's
a little over 13000 feet elevation. It's about 4 miles east of Telluride.
Related GPS story:
I was at the top of a mountain enroute to "Black Bear Pass" I thought I
*was at Black Bear Pass*. I asked a rider on an thrashed XR400 "what's the
name of this mountain?" He said "This is Gable Mountain". "Hmmmmm" I
thought as I typed "Gable" in on the screen of my GPS.
When we arrived in Telluride a friend asked "What did John say to you?"
"John?" I asked.
He replied "That was John Gable on the XR400, Clark Gable's son".

Subject: Re: (klr650) Re: NKLR Dawn Rides ...L.A. Motorcycle Show Appearance
I don't know who Dawn Rides is, but I didn't see her at the show today.
My children and I got there at 12:30 and stayed until 3:30. It was a
lot of fun for all three of us. I did look at the Vulcan 750, and I
have a neighbor that has one, but I think I will keep my GL500I and get
a D-P bike as I have always wanted one since my Yamaha DT 175 died in an
accident about 18 years ago.
For those of you who are interested, the show sure had a mess O' Harley
Clones, both imported and domestic. The Moto Guzzis were lovely to look
at too, as I am partial to twins and singles. I compared the F650,
KLR650, and DR650 (forget the Honda, despite my current mount, I just
don't like the XL650 that much). The beemer is about 3 grand higher at
list price, but does have a great warranty, liquid cooling, and twin
plug heads. But is the name worth three thousand bucks? The KLR is
leading right now, but the DR can be had for under 5 Gs out the door
(according to a local dealer). My kids wanted me to "trade up" to a
Valkyrie Interstate (lousy mileage, good looks), or Intruder 1400 (don't
like wire wheels on a street bike) both are Generic Cruisers, but nice
to look at nonetheless. The KTM Adventurer 640 is neato, but it sure is
tall (I am only 6 feet tall, and it looked too big for me).
I did not get to look around much at the aftermarket stuff, but there
seemed to be plenty. Again, I'm sorry I did not see Dawn Rides (who is
she?), but then I did not know to look until after I got home from the
show, and picked up my e-mail. The name sounds kind of funny, like an
"Adult Film" star. Hmmmm....maybe it's just as well I didn't see her as
I am a Christian and don't need the temptation. Bikes are enough
temptation for me! Mr. Morgan, let me know what you find at the show,
and how you liked it. I live in San Diego, but I don't think I'll go
again tomorrow, as I will more than likely be out a dealership test
riding bikes.
