So you know...
(My first KLR is a 1996 - I am no expert.) My experience with the
supplementary manual is that covers things beyond the original bikes, but
not beyond the '96 (A10). Differences starting with the '96 included
changes to the clutch, flywheel weight, (I think) airbox changes, colour...
I could have very nearly done without the supplementary manual as it seems
to be only slightly more correct than the base manual for the A10...

hey Joe,
Welcome back to the land of the living. ha ha ha.. Protetive clothing. Hmmmm. So
many ways and so many opinions. I guess a lot will tell you that you need this and
you need that. Well, when you go down... you need all you can get. I ride on the
enduro trails around S. Louisiana with full helment , gloves, boots, jeans and
long sleeve shirt. I do the highways and byways much the same around here 'cept
when It's cold enuff that a jacket won't feel way hot. I have an old Kawasaki
Nylon dude from 77 I still wear and it's great for warm weather and cool weather.
For the long haul, it's leather pants and jacket. But with Aerostich and
Tourmaster and etc. out there, the new fabrics are as good if not better than
leathers with all the pads to boot. Price is about the same for the qualities of
both.. Heck, you have vented leather stuff and zippers on the Fabric stuff to
keep you cool but the Fabic stuff will zip up for the cold and rain and the
leather stuff won't and isn't waterproof once it leaves the cow, deer, horse ,
whatever.
So ya got what I wear.... I did about 4500 miles on my DR350 last year at 70/30
pave/dirt/trial and 9000 on the BMW 95/5 pave/gravel and have 1600 on my month
old KLR 650 at about 70/30 pave/gravel/trail on it... But that's me... ha ha
ha....
just get a bit of feed from all and do what feels best for ya.
But Leather vs 105 in the shade really sucks...

That's exactly what Kawasaki says. When I bought my Four wheeler I had a
hell of a time with flat tires fourteen in the fronts and six in the rears. I
called an aftermarket tire dealer and he said to me, Original equipment
manufacturers don't nessessarily put the best stuff on the bike, they buy
tires and bulbs and other assorted parts from the LOWEST BIDDER. You will
always find a better tire, aftermarket. There are a few exceptions, I'm sure
that Kawasaki had good intentions with their exhaust pipe, and it would
probably be cheaper to build something like a Supertrapp.

I've been running DOT 5 fluid in my rear brake after changing
over to a SS line - its a test for the DOT 5 before I flush and change
over the front to DOT 5 as well. I had a slow leak, but I'm pretty sure
I pinned that down to a speedbleeder leaking around the thread. I like
the fact that it doesn't absorb water, and doesn't damage paint, but the
archives didn't have anything on disadvantages. Does anyone else run
DOT 5? Any experiences with faster wear or problems with seals etc?
Thanks in advance.

This area is extremely remote and easy to get lost (we found out the hard

Looks like a fun ride, especially with the water crossings and the tunnel.

Yeah, those rates really went up when all of the Californians and other
aliens started a mass migration to Seattle, and couldn't hack it. Us native
North Westerners must be made of tougher stuff, because we just accept the
weather and don't worry about it. We tend to worry about more important
things, like what to do about all of the increased traffic now that all of
these people are moving in, and how to avoid stepping in dog crap in front
of our houses.
BTW, it was this increased suicide rate in King County (after the mass
migration by Californians to Seattle) that prompted Handgun Control Inc. to
fund the skewed "study" that the media always quotes: "A handgun in the
home is 30 times more likely to be used on a family member than against a
criminal." The reason that this quote is so ridiculous is because that it
counted all suicides as family member shootings, when King County has an
increase in the suicide rate. So maybe it isn't outrageous to include this
in the statistics, but they imply that these suicides are the result of one
family member shooting another. The most ridiculous part of this study is
that they only considered a successful use of a handgun against a criminal
as those instances where a criminal was fatally shot. But, according to the
FBI National Crime Statistics, only less than one percent of home defenses
involving handguns result in a fatal shooting. The other 99 percent of the
time, either the criminal was scared off, held at bay for the police, or
wounded. These instances were thrown out of this study. Anyone see a
problem with this analysis?
Hey, if you can't stand the rain, then stay home! Me, I was born here, this
is my home. I personally really enjoyed the weather in Seattle and count it
as a plus, and I've been all over the world, from the Arctic, to the Sahara
to South America and SE Asia to Africa. Even if I counted the weather as a
minus, the plusses far outweigh the minuses, depending on what your personal
tastes are I guess. The weather in Washington varies greatly depending on
where you live too. For now, I'm living in Eastern Washington, and it has
been in the 70s and clear for the last three days. If you want some serious
rain, then there is the extremely dense rain forrests on the Olympic
Peninsula. If you want tall mountains and snow, then there are the North
Cascades, the Blue Mountains, the Olympic Mountains. We've got vast
evergreen forests, vast wetlands, and even semi-arid desert, where I'm
living now. If you don't like the weather, drive for 30 miles, or wait an
hour, it'll change. It keeps you appreciating the wonder of the world!
Anyway, if you people think it really rains in Seattle all the time, you
should spend some time in Astoria, Oregon, where is rains an average of 350
days per year.
Anyway, to each his own.

So you only drive your car less than 5000 - 7000 miles per year? The
manufacturers have a recommended oil change interval of about this, or at
least every 6 months, regardless of what type of oil you use. Remember
necessarily a matter of what shape the oil is in, but it is a matter of the
combustion by-products that have formed and contaminate the oil. These
by-products form acids that corrode the metal surfaces inside the motor, as
well as water vapor, which condenses and forms water in your oil. Granted,
the portion of water is relatively small, but what it does do is contribute
to the formation of Hydronium ions, which then form carbonic acids.
Bottom line is this, it's not worth it to save a few bucks on changing oil.
Do more oil changes and your motor will last longer, which saves you more
money in the long run. Also, it has never made sense to me to not change
the filter with every oil change, especially in the motorcycle, where the
filter is very inefficient.

Yes, but if you do have to winterize, your carb won't varnish up if you shut
off the petcock, and run the motor until it dies. You could also pull the
float bowel drain plug. As far as gaskets deteriorating, I personally think
that age does that anyway, perhaps slower if it is run, but fogging oil
helps.
This reminds me, I have to winterize my boat before it freezes out.

Rich, I'm guessing from the stuff I've heard here and there, but I think
the fact that DOT5 doesn't absorb water may be the disadvantage. I'm
thinking that water "bubbles" could be floating around in the resevior and
could get sucked into a line and cause brake fade, that is assuming that
water is more compressable than brake fluid. Or you could possibly even
boil the seperated water in the lines.
Somebody set me straight if I'm off base here.
