I wonder if you could say a little about the DR's gearing in
relation to the KLR's.

In considering this somewhat. It seems to me, two-up riding is
'work' except on tame fire roads and pavement. This would be true on
any bike, no?
If you were riding on say 'logging roads' with dips,
steeps, and awkward corners, I can see a full on DP bike.
Still, I could very well be wearing blinders right now.

It is time for me to explore electric gloves/grips and vest. The gloves
and/or grips are my first concern. Where on the KLR do I get my electric
for accesories like gloves or grips? Is it straight from the battery
terminals? Or is there a place to get the power somewhere along the line?

I run mine straight from the battery. I also add a pig tail for a battery

What was their rational for this opinion? I often run 80-95mph with
stock gearing and the engine sounds and feels great during this alleged
abuse. I've been doing this for the entire 24k miles I've put on this bike
(I bought it at 4k); it's only needed a valve adjustment once and the valves
were only slightly off. Valve tightening I'm told is a traditional indicator
that the engine is being run hard. Bogdan
glass and the engine is not run at high speeds (above 72 mph) for
very
long periods...

Presently we have 3 vehicles from Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
2000 KEH 300 Lakota
1999 VN 750 cruiser
1996 KLR 650
All use a sight glass to check the oil level.
All are models rather long in the tooth.
If KHI made a mistake in the location of the sight glass when
designing the KLR, I'm sure that it would have been rectified
sometime during it's production run.
At the very least someone, somewhere would be notified by KHI
that the glass is wrong. No where have I seen this to be so.
Yet I have seen quite a few KLR's and many other HIGH MILEAGE, LOW BREAK
DOWN vehicles produced by KHI and none suffers any adverse effects from
maintaining the oil level using the site glass as a guide.
I will go by the recommendations of the people that designed engineered and
build the thing.
Excessive oil levels create a host of problems, such as foaming.
And a further question I have is:
If you maintain the sight glass is wrong, you would have to be 10 oz. low
before you will know. Or is there some other way to check the oil level?
NY Pete.

Subject: (klr650) Complain to Dual Star or not?
Hi All,
Since I don't see too many emails being swapped back in forth, I thought I
would pose a question...
Scenario:
Purchased a Dual Star center stand with bolts that go thru foot peg
(Torqued, of course). Put center stand on and also lowering links. Rode
bike on off rode adventure. Hit a small wash and a rock that was waiting
patiently for me. Rock hit left foot peg. Bolts snapped like toothpicks.
Bad ride home.
Options:
1) Request bolts from Dual Star free o' charge noting first ride since
mounting.
2) Order new bolts from Dual Star, out of my pocket.
3) Find similar bolts at local bike shop or hardware store.
Opinions?
Jason

Well, seeing as Mike & Carrie (owner/sole proprietor of Dual Star & wife) just
hit a cow while riding their KLR recently, you may get slow service from Dual
Star right now. Perhaps a letter to them asking for replacement bolts, or
specs on what you should look for at the hardware store yourself.
Last time I bought replacement bolts & nuts for an aftermarket piece that
didn't come with exactly the right thing, I was only out $2, so it didn't
bother me that much...

Jason,
Did I miss something?? What makes you think Mike owes you some bolts that
you broke by hitting a rock? If I were you, I would go to you local bike
shop and take the broken bolts with you. This way you will be sure to get
the correct size bolts.

Yep,
I have to agree with you Fred. I broke the things fair and square. But the
first time I took the bike out? Actually, those bolts probably saved my
foot peg. If they would have held up to the shock of the impact, maybe the
welding to the frame would have cracked. I will see if Dual Star can get me
some bolts, just to throw them some business. Out of my pocket...

This will seem almost boring compared to the valve check! Its a much easier
job. Just make sure that you get your oil level correct, which is the same
oil level that the manual calls for.

If it keeps stretching on you, then it is probably nearing the end of its
usable life, as chains stretch faster when they are nearly worn out.
Are you sure that you torqued the rear axle nut?

Current flow is an abstract concept, and it was Benjamine Franklin who
arbitrarily decided which was positive, and which was negative. The current
flow concept says that current flows from the positive terminal, through the
circuit, then to the negative terminal. And, for electrical analysis, this
is valid.
The actual average flow of electrons, at the drift velocity, is from the
negative to the positive. I understand that the US Navy actually attempted
to teach their techs this, and teach the current flow concept to agree with
the actual flow of electrons, but it confused too many people, and wasn't
standard with the rest of the world, so they changed back.
